"peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart. He would die tragically in a car crash a few years later. I should tell you just how I feel And I keep try-y-y-ing But something holds me back When I try to tell you #18) People: "I Love You" (1968) [14] {-} <66><138><191> No one knows what happened that day How his car overturned in flames But as they pulled him from the twisted wreck With his dying breath, they heard him say #19) Peterson, Ray: "Tell Laura I Love Her" (1960) [7] {-} <31><198> You will never win 'we' Your uniforms don't fit 'we' We forget the place we're in #20) Rolling Stones, The: "We Love You" (1967) [50] {-} <-> DL: The last collaboration of the Stones and producer Andrew Loog Oldham. The drummer wrote a well-received book, now hard to find, on his life and times in the band. He describes the day the band walked in the studio to work on this album, only to find some members of the Wrecking Crew trying to play the songs. The label thought it was a good idea that would speed up the effort, but the hired hands could not reproduce the Love 'sound', and the idea was abandoned. The original band completed the album at their own pace. The book also did a good job of describing just how a typical 60s band member lived his life from day-to-day. Down through the years, we've had hard times and tears But they only helped our love grow And we'll stay together no matter how strong the wind blows Not once have I seen your blue eyes filled with envy Or stray from the one that you hold #T2) Presley, Elvis: "True Love Travels On A Gravel Road" (1969) [-] {-} <-> DL: Also performed by Percy Sledge. Written by A.L. "Doodle" Owens and Dallas Frazier, who also penned one of my favorite early-70s songs, "Johnny One Time" for Brenda Lee. Elvis Presley had a possibly-better-known version, but to my knowledge it was not released as a single.
