All entrants knew the theme in one form or another. I may need to branch out when it comes to theme creation. Four teams carved their way into perfect scores: DEC & Friends, Delphi Trivia Club, FS Four State Trivia, and the Village Idiots. You might say they really nailed it. You will never know how badly I wanted to use Monty Python's "Lumberjack Song" in the quiz.as a tie-breaker. Uncertainty about the original date of the performance prevented it. Probably just as well; I'm not sure which snippet I would have chosen ;>. All but one of the songs can be heard here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLOM9kp_8LqivGv9JVuoJTM5jPzzhyUqBs For some reason the Simon Sisters song is not available on Youtube. Surprisingly I did find a video of "Norwegian Wood". It is a bit rough and may not be there when you get to it. The rest of the Youtube caveats apply, so don't bark at me if something is missing. I don't want to leaf without thanking all who entered. Sorry for all the bad puns. GOLQ 387 has already been posted Best regards to all, Mike Weaver ________________________________________________________________________________ After each score below are two characters representing the two tie-breakers: + indicates a tie-breaker answered correctly. - indicates partial credit. x indicates a totally incorrect guess. . indicates no guess. "peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart. (Billboard didn't publish an R&B chart between 11/30/63 and 1/23/65, so recordings in that interval show peak R&B of {n/c} ("no chart").) "xxx",...,"yyy" = prior GOLQ(s) in which the song appeared, if any. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- #01) Appalachians, The: "Bony Moronie" (1963)[62] {-} For those of you who are not familiar with this tune, it is (in my opinion) pretty awful. Think Larry Williams meets The New Christy Minstrels. #02) Arnell, Ginny: "Dumb Head" (1963/64) [50] {n/c} <194> Another one that I suspect would drive the modern day PC crowd nuts. #03) Berry, Chuck: "Rock & Roll Music" (1957/58) [8] {6} <31><89><245> #04) Burnett, Dorsey: "(There Was A) Tall Oak Tree" (1960) {23] {-} #05) Butler, Jerry: "Don't Let Love Hang You Up" (1969) [44] {12} #06) Dale, Alan: "Cherry Pink (And Apple Blossom White)" (1955) [14] {-} <357> #07) Goldsboro, Bobby: "Me Japanese Boy I Love You" (1964) [74] {-} #08) Grammer, Billy: "The Kissing Tree" (1959) [60] {-} #09) Harrison, Noel: "Suzanne" (1967) [56] {-} #10) Herman, Woody And His Orchestra: "I Don't Want Nobody (To Have My Love But You)" (1956) [75] {-} A very successful artist during the big band era, this was the the last of only two GOLQ Billboard charters. He did have some limited success with two tunes in the early 1960's: "Rose Room" and "Days Of Wine And Roses". (#130 & #142 respectively per 'Music Vendor' ratings.) #11) Horton, Johnny: "Sleepy-Eyed John" (1961) [54] {-} #12) Just Us: "I Can't Grow Peaches On A Cherry Tree" (1966) [34] {-} <157> #13) Lopez, Trini: "Lemon Tree" (1965) [20] {-} <74> #14) Marvelettes, The: "Beechwood 4-5789" (1962) [17] {7} <3><95><190><320> OK, fess up. Did any of you try to call this number when the song came out. I didn't, but rumor had it that it would ring in the Motown offices. In modern dialing notation the number would be 234-5789, but of course with no area code it isn't much help. The Wilson Picket tune "634-5789 (Soulsville, U.S.A.)" may lend some credence to the Motown office theory but it is an entirely different song. #15) Otis & Carla: "Knock On Wood" (1967) [30] {8} #16) Platters, The: "Trees" (1961) [62] Memories of the 6th grade when we were required to memorize and recite this Joyce Kilmer poem. I however, know a better version: "I think that I shall never hear a poem as lovely as a beer With golden base and snowy cap the kind Joe's bar has on tap Poems are made by fools I fear but only Schlitz can make a beer." ('Mad Magazine' circa 1961) #17) Righteous Brothers, The: "Georgia On My Mind" (1966) [62] {-} #18) Ros, Edmundo, and His Orchestra: "I Talk To The Trees" (1959) [77] {-} NAVAIRHEADS mentioned that this song came from the play/movie "Paint Your Wagon" and was performed by Clint Eastwood in the motion picture. (Yes, THAT Clint Eastwood). You can hear it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nY5iAOlPvDk Of course, there is the Smothers Brothers send-up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pwk3AylVpX0 #19) Schumann, Walter, The Voices Of: "The Ballad Of Davy Crockett" (1955) [14] {-} One of four versions issued in 1955. #20) Seville, David, The Music of: "The Bird On My Head" (1958) [34] {-} <168> #21) Simon Sisters, The: "Winkin', Blinkin' And Nod" (1964) [73] {n/c} <271><330> Ron Crandall mentioned a somewhat lyrically & tempo different version of the song by "The Big Three" group which contained a "pre-Mama" Cass Elliot. You can hear it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0FB1S-2DpM Also there is a version by the Irish Rovers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efWEvXNlmRE Carly Simon's sister Lucy is given co-writer credit for the song. #22) Smith, Carl: "Ten Thousand Drums" (1959) [43] {-} #23) Whiting, Margaret: "The Money Tree" (1956) [20] {-} #24) Wood, Bobby: "Wood, Bobby: "If I'm A Fool For Loving You" (1964) [74] {n/c} <282> #25) Wood, Brenton: "Baby you Got It" (1967) [34] {30} <154> I had hoped to fool folks into thinking this might be Billy Stewart since it is close to his singing style. Number of entrants fooled into a wrong artist = 0. #T1) Beatles, The: "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)" (1965) [-] {-} I was more than just a little to surprised that this song has not been used in a previous GOLQ given it's ubiquitous airplay. Every entrant identified it. The song was not even released for distribution in the US on 45, although I have seen it reported elsewhere that some 45s existed for use in jukeboxes. #T2) Patience and Prudence: "Apples On A Lilac Tree" (1964) [-] {-} Pop quiz: Patience and Prudence's last name was...... Mcintyre. Their dad Mark provided the orchestra backing on their records. ============================================================================ The following table ranks the songs from most recognized to least recognized.
