RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #387 (GOLQ387)

Congratulations to Village Idiots, who finished first with a perfect score.

Just behind were Delphi Trivia Club, missing only a partial artist name.

The micro-theme in this quiz is a tribute to the great session drummer
Hal Blaine, who died 3/11/19 at 90. He was active until the end, playing
the month prior at his 90th birthday party. He was estimated to have played
on thousands of songs. In a 2011 interview, he identified a few favorites,
and I have included his quotes about several of these.

Each song has one or more audio links (quality and permanence not guaranteed).

As always, thanks to everyone who entered! The May 2019 quiz (GOLQ #388)
has been posted.

GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #387 ANSWERS:
Answers are in the form:

#number) Artist: "Title" (chart year) [peak Pop] {peak R&B} <xxx>...<yyy>

where:
"peak Pop" = Peak position achieved on the weekly Billboard Pop chart.
"peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart.
(Billboard didn't publish an R&B chart between 11/30/63 and 1/23/65,
so recordings in that interval show peak R&B of {n/c} ("no chart").)
"xxx",...,"yyy" = prior GOLQ(s) in which the song appeared, if any.

Co-writer David White died 3/17/19 at 79. The song's other authors were his
frequent collaborator John Medora (a.k.a. John Madara), and Barry himself.
The composers were sued by Motown, claiming that it was too similar to
H-D-H's "Ask Any Girl" (the B-side of The Supremes'"Baby Love" in '64).
After two years of legal wrangling, an agreement was reached to give H-D-H
a portion of the song's royalties.

Reggie Young, a prominent session guitarist of the '60s & '70s, died 1/17/19
at 82. On this song (as with B.J. Thomas' "Hooked on a Feeling"), he
    performed on electric sitar.

Spooner Oldham described how he and Dan Penn wrote the song:
"We got together in the studio one evening with our little notes of our five
or ten best ideas or titles. ... they eventually ended up in the garbage.
The next morning, we were getting tired and decided to call it quits. So we
locked the doors, went across the street to the little cafe ... There was
nobody in there but us and the cook. And I tiredly put my head on the
table, my arms under my head, just for a few seconds. Then I lifted my head
up and looked at Dan, and because I felt sorry that he needed another record
and we were no help to each other that evening, I said, "Dan, I could just
cry like a baby." And he says, "What did you say?" And I said it again.
He says, "I like that." So unbeknownst to me, we had a song started. By
the time we walked across the street back to the studio, we had the first
    verse written. ..."

Hal Blaine: "I played my blue sparkle Ludwig kit on the track ...
It was an easy song to play. I used a stick and a brush because I didn't
want to do anything flashy; I wanted to hear the tune. What's funny is,
Tommy Tedesco did all of these amazing guitar runs, really incredible stuff
-- and he didn't get in the way! Everything he played worked like a charm."

  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N85cwvwGBak (Kaempfert, later instrumental)
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5h_EW4odWw (Sinatra)

Originally an instrumental titled "Beddy Bye," part of the soundtrack
written by Bert Kaempfert for the 1966 movie "A Man Could Get Killed"
(1st link above; familiar melody starts at 7:22). Kaempfert later
released another version (2nd link) on his "Strangers in the Night" LP,
shortly after Sinatra's vocal version became a hit.

Hal Blaine: "From a drummer's standpoint, here's what's funny about this
song: The beat I played on 'Be My Baby' ... is the same beat I played on
'Strangers In The Night.' 'Boom-boo-boom-BANG! Boom-boo-boom-BANG!'.
Exactly the same, only much softer."

Despite this song being one of his biggest late-career hits, Sinatra himself
was unequivocal about disliking it. For example: "Here's a song, the first
time I heard Don Costa play it for me some years ago, I hated it! I hated
this goddamn song the first I've heard it. And I still hate it!"

Peter's vocals prominently. The song was written by Barry Mann &
