From: Rich Ardini <golq390@golq.org> Subject: RESULTS and ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz 390 (GOLQ390) Sender: GOLQ Mailing List <list@golq.org> Date: Sun, 4 Aug 2019 23:38:42 -0400 (EDT) RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #390 (GOLQ390) Congratulations to James White, the Delphi Trivia Club, Village Idiots, Mike Weaver, Will McCorry, DEC & Friends, and Vito & The Salutations, all of whom tied for first with perfect scores. Really Rockin' In Boston also identified all the regular songs. James White was the first to submit a perfect score, Will McCorry submitted the most complete and accurate summary of the four events. The theme was 50th-anniversary commemorations and the four events in the quiz being remembered are: - First moon landing. Several identified the trivia that each astronaut brought their own customized mix-tape to listen to during the flight. The tapes were provided by one Mickey Kapp. In particular, Buzz Aldrin's tape can be heard in the background of the on-board audio of the flight, the night before they landed. He was playing it while working in the capsule. It included several of the songs in this quiz, although some were by different artists. Vanity Fair December 2018 has an excellent story on this, along with a link to the on-board audio that night. Mickey sadly died on June 11th this year. - Woodstock. Enough said. - Altamont. This may have been tricky to identify because it is months later than the other events and most Altamont performers were also at Woodstock. The Rolling Stones are the only band in this quiz who played solely at Altamont. - Manson murders. Between its impending anniversary and its role in the new Tarantino movie, there is a lot being posted right now, both about the actual event and those peripheral to it. And there are many GOLQ personalities who can be connected to this, both on the Manson and Tate sides (see #04 below). Most teams identified the general theme, if not all four events. There were some votes for the Stonewall riots, another recent 50th-anniversary event of note. The songs themselves were not that hard to identify, as the average score was 451.4. Thanks to everyone who entered. GOLQ #391 will soon be posted, if it has not already. - Rich Ardini ______________________________________________________________________ After each score below are two characters representing the two tie-breakers: + indicates a tie-breaker answered correctly. - indicates partial credit. x indicates a totally incorrect guess. . indicates no guess. "peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart. (Billboard didn't publish an R&B chart between 11/30/63 and 1/23/65, so recordings in that interval show peak R&B of {n/c} ("no chart").) "xxx",...,"yyy" = prior GOLQ(s) in which the song appeared, if any. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #390 Recordings #01-25 were from 1958 through 1969 Due 5:00 p.m. EDT (GMT-4) on Wednesday, July 31, 2019 ---------------------------------------------------------------- We are not afraid Oh lord, not afraid Oh lord, not afraid Today #01) Baez, Joan: "We Shall Overcome" (1963) [90] {-} <247> QM: Woodstock. The lyrics are from her Woodstock performance. When I cruise around The other parts of the town I got my decal in back #02) Beach Boys, The: "Be True To Your School" (1963/64) [6] {27} <109><184> QM: Manson. It all started when Dennis Wilson picked up some Manson family hitchhikers. Eventually, the Beach Boys would record a Manson song (see #T1). Dennis was also the one who introduced Manson to Terry Melcher, then living at the Cielo Drive address. Since Bruce Johnston (see #04) eventually became a Beach Boy, an early song before he joined the group was chosen for the quiz. Would you mind a reflecting sign Just let it shine Within your mind And show you the colors that are real #03) Blood, Sweat & Tears: "Spinning Wheel" (1969) [2] {45} <136> QM: Woodstock, Moon landing. This song was on the Buzz Aldrin mix tape, although by Peggy Lee. Drive-in movies every night Stayin' out till half past one Sleep in late and live it light now 'Cause #04) Bruce and Terry: "Summer Means Fun" (1964) [72] {n/c} <142><233> QM: Manson. Terry Melcher was a central figure in the Manson story. He was first a recording artist (this, Rip Chords), then became a successful music producer (Byrds, Paul Revere and Raiders). Terry was living at the Cielo Drive address, along with Mark Lindsay, when he first met Manson. Terry also visited Manson at the Spahn Ranch. He considered signing Manson to a record contract, but declined. The rejection upset Charlie and influenced Terry to move to a new address in Malibu. Sharon Tate then moved into the house. The Cielo Drive house has connections to other GOLQ artists. In the many blogs and articles now being posted about the house, names such as Jimi Hendrix, Mamas & The Papas, and other Laurel Canyon artists may appear as visitors there. Barbara Lewis (4! recent GOLQ appearances between quizzes 373-382) had lunch there with Sharon and actress Joanna Pettet hours before the murders. Even Johnny Cash has a connection. The song in his stunning end-of-life video, "Hurt", was first recorded at that house by 90s artist Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, right before it was demolished and a new one with a new street address was built in its place. I am so afraid of dyin' Before I dry the tears she's cryin' Before I watch your sea birds flyin' #05) Campbell, Glen: "Galveston" (1969) [4] {-} <88><168><333> QM: Moon landing. From the Buzz Aldrin mix tape. And my dear mother left me When I was quite young When I was quite young She said "Lord, have mercy On my wicked son" #06) Canned Heat: "On The Road Again" (1968) [16] {-} <80><139> QM: Woodstock. And so I quit the police department Got myself a steady job #07) Cocker, Joe: "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window" (1969/70) [30] {-} <133> QM: Woodstock. Joe did not perform this song at Woodstock. She hides in an attic concealed on a shelf Behind volumes of literature based on herself And runs across the pages like some tiny elf Knowing that it's hard to find Stuff way back in her mind #08) Country Joe and The Fish: "Not So Sweet Martha Lorraine" (1967) [95] {-} <-> QM: Woodstock. Jaw, jaw, jaw, jaw, jaw Talk up in the White House Talk up to your door So much goin' on I just can't hear you #09) Creedence Clearwater Revival: "Commotion" (1969) [30] {-} <210> QM: Woodstock. Sometimes it hurts so badly I must cry out loud I am lonely #10) Crosby, Stills & Nash: "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" (1969) [21] {-} <49><262> QM: Woodstock, Altamont. The song was sung at Woodstock but not at Altamont. Gee, I feel just about ten feet tall Havin' a ball Guess you might call me a Pollyanna #11) Day, Doris: "Everybody Loves A Lover" (1958) [6] {-} <78><233> QM: Manson. Terry Melcher's mother, she has been mentioned as the biggest influence on Terry moving out of the Cielo Drive house. This also allowed for a song before 1960 to be included in the quiz. And came back wearing his ring I sat down and cried my eyes out Now that was a foolish thing #12) Gore, Lesley: "Judy's Turn To Cry" (1963) [5] {10} <51><107><306> QM: Manson, Moon landing. This is the odd-ball entry. Quincy Jones discovered and produced early Lesley Gore songs, including this one. Per Will McCorry, he also produced Frank Sinatra's version of Fly Me To The Moon, which is the quintessential Apollo 11 song. The song couldn't be used in this quiz however due to re-use rules. Quincy is also in the small group that claim they would have been at the house that night, but something came up (Steve McQueen is another rumored to be in this group). Some identified this with another 50th year commemoration this summer, the Stonewall Riots, due to the artist involved. Walk in, it's around the back, honey Half a mile from the railroad track #13) Guthrie, Arlo: "Alice's Rock & Roll Restaurant" (1969) [97] {-} <102> QM: Woodstock. The 45 version, released over a year after the original album cut, is a totally different production. Arlo did not perform this song at Woodstock. No doubt some folks enjoy doin' battle Like presidents, prime ministers and kings So let us build them shelves So they might fight among themselves And leave us be, whose those who want to sing #14) Hardin, Tim: "Simple Song Of Freedom" (1969) [50] {-} <182><257> QM: Woodstock. There must be some kind of way outta here #15) Hendrix, Jimi, Experience, The: "All Along The Watchtower" (1968) [20] {-} <104><214><264> QM: Woodstock. Jimi did not perform this song at Woodstock. In loyalty to their kind They cannot tolerate our minds In loyalty to our kind We cannot tolerate their obstruction #16) Jefferson Airplane: "Crown Of Creation" (1968) [64] {-} <180> QM: Woodstock, Altamont. Lead singer Marty Balin was knocked unconscious by a Hells Angel 'bodyguard' during their Altamont set. This song was not played at Woodstock or Altamont. Dawn has come at last Twenty-five years, honey, just in one night, oh yeah Well, I'm twenty-five years older now So I know we can't be right And I'm no better, baby But I can't help you no more #17) Joplin, Janis: "Kozmic Blues" (1969/70) [41] {-} <178><264> QM: Woodstock. Cars full of motors, painted green Mouths full of chocolate-covered cream Arms that can only lift a spoon #18) King, Jonathan: "Everyone's Gone To The Moon" (1965) [17] {-} <8><108><162><308> QM: Moon landing. Besides to give a hint that one of the events was the moon landing, this was included and played on one of the other astronaut's mix- tapes. It was not played as part of Buzz Aldrin's tape. King would later end up going, not to the moon, but to prison for past assaults against schoolboys. All I did was talk about you Hear your name and I'd start to cry There's just no getting over you #19) Love: "My Little Red Book" (1966) [52] {-} <114><176><285> QM: Manson. Two connections here. In one of this group's early incarnations as the Grass Roots, future Manson member Bobby 'Cupid' Beausoleil was a guitarist. When they changed their name to Love, Bobby claimed his nickname influenced the choice. Arthur Lee replaced Bobby with ex-Byrds roadie Bryan MacLean around this time, possibly because Bobby was too young to legally play in some clubs. Bryan was friendly with some of the Tate house members. He would later claim he was planning to be there that night, but changed his mind. Bobby Beausoleil was arrested two nights before those murders for another Manson family murder and thus couldn't be there, either. In another universe (or alternate Tarantino movie), two Love guitarists might have bumped into each other at the house that night, except one was there to murder the other. This group also declined an invitation to Woodstock. And if we're victims of the night I won't be blinded by the light #20) Rush, Merrilee, & The Turnabouts: "Angel Of The Morning" (1968) [7] {-} <11><144><292> QM: Moon landing. This song was on the Aldrin mixtape, but by Bettye Swann. Hypnotized me there that day I came to play in my usual way, hey Floating along with a whimsical twinkling In her strange green eyes Linger with me, she said, 'Yes!' And oh the time did fly #21) Sebastian, John: "She's A Lady" (1969) [84] {-} <280> QM: Woodstock. Not expected to perform there, but took the stage when other bands were late arriving. I am no better and neither are you We are the same whatever we do #22) Sly & The Family Stone: "Everyday People" (1968/69) [1] {1} <82><182><257> QM: Woodstock, Moon landing. Like #20, this song was on the Aldrin mixtape, but by Peggy Lee. A young girl in Calcutta Barely eight years old The flies that swarm the marketplace Will see she don't get old Don't you know she heard it On that July afternoon #23) Stewart, John: "Armstrong" (1969) [74] {-} <240><295> QM: Moon landing. This was released months after the moon landing as a tribute to Armstrong and was included in the quiz to give a hint about the event. John also had a song on the Aldrin mix-tape, "Mother Country", from his then most recent album. The song is a somewhat grand production that really stands out from the other songs on the tape. No more hunger and thirst But first be a person #24) Streisand, Barbra: "People" (1964) [5] {n/c} <121><256> QM: Moon landing. Part of the Aldrin mix-tape. Why don't you all f-fade away And don't try to dig what we all s-s-s-say #25) Who, The: "My Generation" (1966) [74] {-} <39><115> QM: Woodstock. ------------ Tie-Breakers ------------ I'm your kind, oh your kind and I can see You walk on, walk on I love you, pretty girl My life is yours Ah you can have my world Never had a lesson, I ever learned But I know, we all get our turn An' I love you Never learn not to love you #T1) Manson, Charles: "Cease To Exist" (1968) [-] {-} <-> QM: Manson (Capt. Obvious here). If you play this without knowing the artist, you may find it to be a pretty good song. This song was re-worked by the Beach Boys and included on the 20/20 album as Never Learn Not To Love. It was also the B-side to Bluebirds Over The Mountain. This backstory behind this song and how it affected the Manson-Melcher-Beach Boys relationship has been noted as a possible flashpoint that eventually resulted in the selection of the Cielo Drive address for the murders that night. Yeh, see the fire is sweepin' Our very street today Burns like a red coal carpet Mad bull lost your way #T2) Rolling Stones, The: "Gimme Shelter" (1969) [-] {-} <-> QM: Altamont. Allegedly invited to Woodstock, but had other projects going on. ========================================================================= The following table ranks the songs from most recognized to least recognized. The first column indicates the average number of points scored on that song (total points divided by number of entrants).
