Rick observed that as of GOLQ396, the Used List showed that we've used more than 5000 unique regular (non-tiebreaker) songs! Congratulations to Delphi Trivia Club, NAVAIRHEADS, and Village Idiots, who finished in a 3-way tie for first place. Just behind, by a single tie-breaker, was The EJ'S & Co. team. Song #T1 proved to be a complete stumper, with every other song being identified by at least 5 entrants. Each song has one or more audio links (quality and permanence not guaranteed). As always, thanks to everyone who entered! The March 2020 quiz (GOLQ #398) by Regina Litman has already been posted. -- Howard Teitelbaum ________________________________________________________________________________ After each score below are two characters representing the two tie-breakers: + indicates a tie-breaker answered correctly. - indicates partial credit. x indicates a totally incorrect guess. . indicates no guess. "peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart. (Billboard didn't publish an R&B chart between 11/30/63 and 1/23/65, so recordings in that interval show peak R&B of {n/c} ("no chart").) "xxx",...,"yyy" = prior GOLQ(s) in which the song appeared, if any. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Show me I'm wrong Hurt me sometime But someday I'll treat you real fine #01) Animals, The: "It's My Life" (1965/66) [23] {-} <35><225><338> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wk1Zrda5JXI (Billy Carr demo version) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RnYpSXAvGI (Animals) Written by Carl D'Errico (music) and Roger Atkins (lyrics). In an interview, Atkins noted that he wrote the chorus as: "Sure, I'll do wrong, hurt you sometime" He added: "But Eric sings, 'Show me I'm wrong, hurt me sometime' which never made any sense to me. Everyone who's recorded it sings the wrong chorus." The demo version (first link) illustrates Atkins' original wording. Down the way Where the nights are gay And the sun shines daily on the mountain top #02) Belafonte, Harry: "Jamaica Farewell" (1956/57) [14] {-} <126><223><294> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmIQSSwqKEc Irving Burgie (known as Lord Burgess), great Calypso singer & songwriter, died 11/29/19 at 95. He wrote many songs for Harry Belafonte, including "Jamaica Farewell" and the lyrics to "Banana Boat (Day-O)." Now you're on my wavelength And I'm readin' you just fine Don't cut outta here 'Til we get on cloud nine #03) Byrnes, Edward, and Connie Stevens: "Kookie, Kookie (Lend Me Your Comb)" (1959) [4] {30} <20><249><309> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJVciRRKyAM Edd "Kookie" Byrnes died 1/8/20 at 87. You'll look at me And you will know our love was Meant to be #04) Chiffons, The: "One Fine Day" (1963) [5] {6} <14><95><342> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paBz4LMyf-w In an interview, lead singer Judy Craig mentioned that Goffin/King had written the song for Little Eva, so the arrangement was in Eva's preferred (higher) key. Judy noted that she found singing it a bit challenging for that reason, modestly noting that she "got through it." In the hall, they got a rockin' band Come on, baby, let me take your hand #05) Comstock, Bobby: "Let's Stomp" (1963) [57] {-} <-> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTIkelZNjms Died 1/9/20 at 78. Talkin' 'bout a girl that looks quite like you She didn't have the time to wait in the queue She cried away her life since she fell off the cradle #06) Cream: "Badge" (1969) [60] {-} <102><221> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSpW6MePb10 Ginger Baker, the group's drummer, died 10/6/19 at 80. Co-written by Eric Clapton and George Harrison. Per George: "I helped Eric write 'Badge', you know. Each of them had to come up with a song for that 'Goodbye' Cream album and Eric didn't have his written. We were working across from each other and I was writing the lyrics down and we came to the middle part so I wrote 'Bridge.' Eric read it upside down and cracked up laughing - 'What's BADGE?' he said. After that, Ringo walked in drunk and gave us that line about the swans living in the park." It happened the other night We argued but we, we didn't fight He grabbed his hat and slammed the door And he hasn't been back no more #07) Drew, Patti: "Tell Him" (1967) [85] {22} <279> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RtHvljyDZ4 (Drew-Vels, 1964) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KoF663ZHbM0 (Patti Drew, 1967) Written by Carlton Black, who died 10/2/19 at 75. He originally wrote it as "Tell Her" for his group, The Duvals (see song #T1), but they apparently never recorded it. The 1964 Drew-Vels version (GOLQ368) comprised the 3 Drew sisters plus Black singing bass; he reprised his role in Patti's 1967 solo version. I accepted either artist name, although the earlier version doesn't have the doubled "we" in the 2nd line (Mike Weaver gets kudos for mentioning this in his entry). Oh, hold me close, my true love Kiss me tenderly There is only one love One love for me #08) Everly Brothers, The: "Always It's You" (1960) [56] {-} <182><257> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpOTMaUREpg Written by Felice & Boudleaux Bryant; B-side of "Cathy's Clown." The song's melody and chorus (but not the verses) are shared with the 1930 "Worried Man Blues" by the Carter Family. May good fortune find your doorway May the bluebirds sing your song May no trouble travel your way May no worry stay too long #11) McGuire Sisters, The: "May You Always" (1959) [11] {-} <144> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zvf4rHR0UA (Mc Guire Sisters, 1959) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bo5fTPeOrpc (Harry Harrison, 1965) Harry Harrison, a beloved New York DJ from the '60s thru '00s, died 1/28/20 at 89. And I can guess How they still got married and had twins They came in tins #14) Peter and Gordon: "Knight In Rusty Armour" (1966/67) [15] {-} <45><252> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FafxdYe-hb4 The U.S. release on Capitol retained the British spelling on the label, but the picture sleeve Americanized it to "Armor." I said, my baby loves me so He really lets me know #15) Platters, The: "He's Mine" (1957) [16] {5} <113> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvI03JDni4k A rare lead by Zola Taylor. Nominally the B-side of "I'm Sorry," although both songs peaked in the Top-20 on the pop and R&B charts. It's your chance to wake up and plan Another brand new day Either way #16) Rascals, The: "A Beautiful Morning" (1968) [3] {36} <12><252> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BvzG4IRTZA Do I need your arms around me? Did I do wrong by coming home? Have you found somebody new? I've called you twice No answer at all by telephone #20) Shep and The Limelites: "What Did Daddy Do" (1962) [94] {-} <-> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5dZtkhLb2g A rather downbeat final(?) chapter of the Heartbeats/Limelites song cycle ("A Thousand Miles Away", "500 Miles To Go", "Daddy's Home", etc.). Now, I've got a love so deep in the pit of my heart And each day it grows more and more I'm not ashamed to come and plead to you, baby If pleadin' keeps you from walkin' out that door #21) Temptations, The: "Ain't Too Proud To Beg" (1966) [13] {1} <26><145><256> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uu9AkQUpcso (full song) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CpgSXXRV5Pk (minus lead vocal) Daddy's home after running away From the mother, mother-in-law He lift a hundred pounds of clay And what'd I say? This was the lead track from her 1966 LP "Walkin' My Cat Named Dog." In recent years, the song has been used as the opening theme for the 2014 movie (and subsequent TV series on FX) "What We Do in the Shadows." Your humble scribe recommends this hilarious mockumentary about the day-to-day lives of a group of vampire housemates. ________________________________________________________________________________ The following table ranks the songs from most recognized to least recognized.
