I hope everyone had a safe and happy 4th of July holiday. Yup, this quiz was a toughie. Many obscurities coupled with the fact that many of the thematic references were in the lyrics. The main part of the theme was intended as a shout-out to the health care professionals who have contributed so much during this pandemic period. I know a few folks in that field; I know that they have worked long hours and placed their own well-being at risk to work with patients. The other part of the theme was simple ancillary things related to the virus, quarantining and so forth. Everyone identified the theme. Three teams met the challenge with perfect scores: The EJ'S & Co, James White, and The Village Idiots took home the GOLQ gold. Close behind was Delphi Trivia Club who will have to be satisfied with the GOLQ silver. Withdrawals will have to be made in person from the GOLQ vault which is in a secret location. More seriously, I want to thank all who took the time to enter in these chaotic times. Howard Teitelbaum has already issued GOLQ 402. "peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart. (Billboard didn't publish an R&B chart between 11/30/63 and 1/23/65, so recordings in that interval show peak R&B of {n/c} ("no chart").) "xxx",...,"yyy" = prior GOLQ(s) in which the song appeared, if any. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Days are fun, nights with you, yeah Nothing's bad, sure to do Laziness is an epidemic #01) Barry, Len: "It's That Time Of The Year" (1966) [91] {-} Behind the shelter in the Middle of the roundabout A pretty nurse is selling Poppies from a tray #02) Beatles, The: "Penny Lane" (1967) [1] {-} <112><205> I'm in great danger Out here trying to drive The way this Ford wiggles when I'm approaching forty-five I have to nurse it along Like a little suffering pup And cars whizzing by me #03) Berry, Chuck: "Dear Dad" (1965) [95] {-} I thought this was a great CB tune but the charts don't support my opinion. One for the lonely That star will shine its light Each time that someone sighs #04) Chamberlain, Richard: "Theme From Dr. Kildare (Three Stars Will Shine Tonight)" (1962) [10] {-} <136> But if you don't weigh What I want, baby Don't come around at all #05) Dr. Feelgood and The Interns: "Doctor Feel-Good" (1962) [66] {-} <116> Dr. Feelgood was an AKA for William "Piano Red" Perryman. It's in trouble If he's still hungry The whole country's doomed #06) Dr. West's Medicine Show and Junk Band: "The Eggplant That Ate Chicago" (1966/67) [52] {-} <312> Written by group member Norman Greenbaum. If his sweet talk is thrilling And you think you're willing Oh, baby, you better stay home #07) Exciters, The: "Get Him" (1963) [76] {-} <231> You told me to leave you alone My father said, come on home My doctor said, take it easy Oh, but your loving Is much too strong #08) Franklin, Aretha: "Chain Of Fools" (1967/68) [2] {1} <47><190><281> Well, it ain't the measles And it ain't the flu Just a little old virus Tagged Y O U #09) Gadson, Mel: "Comin' Down With Love" (1960) [69] {-} Another one I liked but no one else seemed to. Did a bit better in the Cashbox ratings (#50). There was a virus going round Papa caught it and he died last spring And now Mama doesn't seem To wanna do much of anything #10) Gentry, Bobbie: "Ode to Billie Joe" (1967,1976) [1,54] {8,-} <16><102><365> I don't need sunny skies For things I have to do Cause I stay home The whole day long And think of you #11) King, Carole: "It Might As Well Rain Until September" (1962) [22] {-} <25><88><271><356> When you grow up Why don't you be a doctor? You don't wanna be a doctor? You wanna be a disc jockey? #12) Laurie, Linda: "Ambrose (Part Five)" (1959) [52] {-} <122><295> Navairheads offered this: Always loved Linda and that weird song. She did both the female and male parts on this song, and actually had a nice voice. Here's a song that I remember from where I grew up in CT; it supposedly hit #1 in Boston. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtHypSbfAZc She appeared on the TV show, "To Tell The Truth." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-bQqsoMvQ0 She also wrote Helen Reddy's 1973 hit record "Leave Me Alone (Ruby Red Dress)". HOWEVER - I feel obligated to leap to the defense of my North East Ohio artists and mention this version of "All Winter Long": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EW1lBVIGFWI The artist is Sherry Starlyn, a cute-as-a-button (does anybody say that anymore?) young girl from a Cleveland suburb. Locally she pretty much drowned out the Linda Laurie version, but I don't think either one made the national charts. If you can mend broken bones and take out kidney stones And do a little psychiatry Then you ought to be able to put me on the table And take good care of me #13) Loudermilk, John D.: "Callin' Doctor Casey" (1962) [83] {-} <184><347> Don't call a doctor A nurse is worse Cause a pill won't heal my pain When I'm feeling blue You know what to do To make me feel alright again #14) Marvelettes, The: "You're My Remedy" (1964) [48] {n/c} Oh nurse I'm gonna make a new resolution I'm never never never gonna speed again Put a gallon in me Alan #15) Nervous Norvus: "Transfusion" (1956) [8] {-} <11><118><208> And in a little while The girl had seen the doctor And she came home with a smile #16) Northcott, Tom: "1941" (1968) [88] {-} <282> Written by Harry Nilsson. I was feelin' so bad Asked the family doctor what I had, I said, Doctor, Doctor, Mister M.D. Can you tell me, what's ailing me? #17) Olympics, The: "Good Lovin'" (1965) [81] {-} <183> Version preceded 'Young Rascals' by about a year. It was actually preceded by yet another version by 'Lemme B. Good' albeit with substantially different lyrics. You can hear it here: https://youtu.be/2LN3MiLgTmE?t=105 Yes, the doctor told me Boy, you don't need no pills Just a handful of nickels The jukebox will cure your ills #18) Perkins, Carl: "Boppin' The Blues" (1956) [70] {-} <96><265> Our camp nurse Is quite a swimmer She says swimming Makes you slimmer #19) Sherman, Allan: "Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh! (A Letter From Camp) (New 1964 Version)" (1964) [59] {n/c} <148> A quick note about scoring this one. Normally I am pretty loose about titular precision, just as long as the answer is close. I regard this as "complex title" consisting of three elements. In this case I was looking for the presence of "Hello Muddah..." or "Letter from Camp" and some reference to the fact that it is a new version. The 45 labeling is slightly different sequentially - The "(New 1964 Version)" precedes the "Muddah" and "Letter" lines. Just making mention. Unlock the operating room nurse (But she can't find her keys) #20) Shorr, Mickey and The Cutups: "Dr. Ben Basey" (1962) [60] {-} A "break-in" novelty record co-written and produced by Dickie Goodman. Want some lovin', baby, that ain't all I wanna kiss her but the gal's too tall Young man rhythm got a hold of me too #21) Smith, Huey (Piano), and The Clowns: "Rocking Pneumonia And The Boogie Woogie Flu" (1957) [52] {5} <28><245><328> OK, here is a case where I am not in agreement with Mr. Whitburn, but I'm obligated to follow the will of Landru. (Get out your 'Star Trek' DVDs.) I have looked at the original "Ace 530" release for this 45 and nowhere on it does the word "Piano" show up. There is a reference to "Part 1" on the label, but not it is not part of the title. The "B" side has the same title, but again, there is a "part 2" outside the title area. Yet, Whitburn calls this simply "Part 2" If you have never heard it, it is essentially the same instrumental tune as the "A" side with a few shouts thrown in. Geeze, I am really getting nit-picky in my old age. She's my nurse, she's English And wears tissue paper in her dress And you can hear it #22) Thompson, Kay: "Eloise" (1956) [39] {-} Not surprisingly this was the least recognized song on the quiz. I have always wondered if Lily Tomlin derived her Edith Ann character from this record. She (Lily) would have been 16 or so when the record came out. See if you agree: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0b9flR3DYsQ I was a home watching my TV When the noise of the phone rudely disturbed me I wasn't too sure at first, just what the doctor meant When he informed me that there had been an accident #23) Unifics, The: "The Beginning Of My End" (1968/69) [36] {9} <132> I punched my buddy In the nose after lunch Now I'm in trouble 'cause The dean saw the punch #24) Vee, Bobby: "Stayin' In" (1961) [33] {-} <117><323> What do you get when you kiss a guy You get enough germs to catch pneumonia #25) Warwick, Dionne: "I'll Never Fall In Love Again" (1969/70) [6] {17} <144><216><277> And I heard my baby groan And I felt so broken-hearted She used to be my very own I tried so hard to keep from crying My heart felt just like lead She was all that I had to live for Whoa, I just wish it were me instead #T1) Bland, Bobby: "Saint James Infirmary" (1961) [-] {-} I was prepared for a plethora of answers to this one but most of you hit on Bobby Bland. I have a number of versions of the song, by a number of different artists. I did a quick run through of most of them and the lyrics are pretty specific to the Bobby Bland version. EXCEPT one team plucked "Cops 'n Robbers" out of the depths of obscurity. Fortunately, I had that one too and it fits. Maybe they were just testing me :). The band was from England and as far as I know only had 3 U.S. releases. Other versions of the song tend to be a bit more on the morbid side, referring to a body on a "long white table," etc. You say you get your jolly goods By trotting o'er the globe Ridin' on a camel's back In a crimson robe Your birth reads like a novel As for how you came to be You say your mummy found you In a laughing willow tree #T2) Electric Prunes, The: "Dr. Do-Good" (1967) [128] {-} To each their own, but I think this is a pretty awful song(?). It was chosen simply for it's title contribution to the theme. ________________________________________________________________________________ The following table ranks the songs from most recognized to least recognized. The first column indicates the average number of points scored on that song (total points divided by number of entrants).
