RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #402 (GOLQ402)

Congratulations to Delphi Trivia Club, James White, and Village Idiots, who tied
for first place with perfect scores.

Just behind were The EJ'S & Co. and Tri-State Trivia, each of whom missed a
single tiebreaker. Also, great showings by Really Rockin' In Boston and
Will McCorry, who missed only the tiebreakers.

A few folks pointed out the unusually large (even by my standards) number of
"tribute to the departed" songs in this quiz. The number of such casualties is
sad, but not unexpected given the actuarial reality that GOLQ artists are
somewhere between sexagenarians and centenarians at this point.

Each song has one or more audio links (quality and permanence not guaranteed).

As always, thanks to everyone who entered! The August 2020 quiz (GOLQ #403)
by Regina Litman has already been posted.

GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #402 ANSWERS:
Answers are in the form:

#number) Artist: "Title" (chart year) [peak Pop] {peak R&B} <xxx>...<yyy>

where:
"peak Pop" = Peak position achieved on the weekly Billboard Pop chart.
"peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart.
(Billboard didn't publish an R&B chart between 11/30/63 and 1/23/65,
so recordings in that interval show peak R&B of {n/c} ("no chart").)
"xxx",...,"yyy" = prior GOLQ(s) in which the song appeared, if any.

throughout the band's existence, died 12/7/19 at 81. William "Buzzy"
McClane, the baritone through 1958, also died recently, as reported by
several oldies newsletters - I wasn't able to find more information.

#09) First Edition, The: "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition
      Was In)" (1968) [5] {-} <25><146>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npR_dsirETI (Jerry Lee Lewis, 1967)
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-GbcVW8DFY (First Edition)

Founder/lead singer Kenny Rogers died 3/20/20 at 81. The first recording
of this bit of psychedelia was by Jerry Lee Lewis, who included it on his
1967 LP "Soul My Way." Delphi noted: Produced and arranged by Mike Post,
the song had Glen Campbell playing the lead guitar intro.

RRiB noted that songwriter Mickey Newbury had a unique achievement in 1968:
He had Top-5 songs on 4 different Billboard charts. The others were "Sweet
Memories" by Andy Williams (#1 Easy Listening), "Time Is a Thief" by Solomon
Burke (#1 R&B), and "Here Comes the Rain Baby" by Eddy Arnold (#1 Country).

#10) Gore, Lesley: "It's My Party" (1963) [1] {1} <59><110><278><344>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=twa8SZGKD3Y (Chiffons)
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TqkBEd3jZ3k (Helen Shapiro)
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9PXlQEyY4w (Lesley Gore)

Although the original label credits Herb Weiner, John Gluck, and Wally Gold
(staff writers at the music publishing firm), lyrics were actually written
by freelancer Seymour Gottlieb, who co-wrote regularly with Weiner. The
song's genesis was an argument Seymour had with his teenage daughter Judy,
regarding her Sweet 16 party. According to Judy Solash nee Gottlieb, "My
parents insisted that my grandparents had to be invited. I, of course,
being a bratty teenager, said I didn't want them there. I burst into tears,
and my father said, 'Don't cry.' I answered 'It's my party, and I'll cry
if I want to!'" Perhaps Dad took a tiny bit of revenge in making "Judy" the
name of the mean girl in the song? In any event, Seymour wasn't involved
in writing the sequel, "Judy's Turn to Cry."

Both The Chiffons and Helen Shapiro recorded the song in '63 prior to
Lesley, but their renditions were buried as album tracks.

I mean, the kind of woman make a fool of you
She make a young man groan and an old man pain
The way she took my money was a cryin' shame
#11) Hawkins, Ronnie, and The Hawks: "Mary Lou" (1959) [26] {7} <54><287>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwOoqb_DOEE (Young Jessie, 1955)
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kazyRbZNpFw (Ronnie Hawkins, 1959)

Co-written & first recorded by Obie "Young" Jessie in 1955; he died 4/27/20
at 83. He had a long career as soloist, member of many groups, and
songwriter. Perhaps his best known association was a fleeting one with
The Coasters, appearing on their 2-sided hit "Young Blood" / "Searchin'".

Delphi notes: With several different members thru the early years, the more
constant members of The Hawks were Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm, Rick Danko,
Richard Manuel, and Garth Hudson...which later became known as The Band when
they split from Ronnie in 1964.

#13) John, Little Willie: "Fever" (1956) [24] {1} <86>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fwX4F_ROMPU (Little Willie John, 1956)
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8P1waRpTts (Peggy Lee, 1958)
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_IpgKzy75E (Rita Moreno & Muppets, 1976)

Co-written by the late Eddie Cooley (see #06 above). A bigger hit for
Peggy Lee in 1958, with expanded lyrics. As both fit alphabetically, I
gave full credit for either artist (although Peggy sings the second line
as "I get a FEVER that's so hard to bear"). Jessica and Delphi both cited
the delightful rendition by Rita Moreno, accompanied by Floyd Pepper and
the somewhat uncooperative Animal, on the Muppet Show (3rd link).

#14) Left Banke, The: "Pretty Ballerina" (1967) [15] {-} <17><98><171><239><341>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IT1yAo3ssQw

As with song #05, two group members passed recently. Steve Martin Caro,
the lead singer, died 1/14/20 at 71. He went by "Steve Martin" in the '60s,
but later used his full name professionally when the comedian became famous.

More recently, bassist Tom Finn died 6/27/20 at 71. His then-girlfriend,
Renee Fladen, inspired Michael Brown (the group's keyboard player) to write
"Walk Away Renee" and "Pretty Ballerina."

Some friends go bowling every Saturday night

  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVb-KQ2I1NE

Originally released in 1965; a regional hit in several markets, but didn't
chart nationally (and barely at that) until 1967.

You'll be mine in the morning
Oh and be mine again in the night
We'll always, I mean always, be together
Because our love, yes our love will be right
#17) Pentagons, The: "To Be Loved (Forever)" (1961) [48] {-} <46><193><333>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xc4xaJ_2BXA

Lead singer Joe Jones (not the "You Talk Too Much" guy) died 9/6/19 at 77.
Songwriter is the group's baritone, Kenneth Goodloe (misspelled as "Goodlie"
    on the original label).

Do you remember when we met?

Died 3/14/20, on his 94th birthday. He co-wrote this song (under his real
    name, Philip Baptiste).

You lend your heart

Millie died 5/5/20 at 73. Song was originally recorded by Barbie Gaye in
    1956 (as "My Boy Lollypop.")

I keep hearin' you're concerned about my happiness
But all that thought you're givin' me is conscience, I guess
If I were walkin' in your shoes, I wouldn't worry none
#22) Statler Brothers, The: "Flowers On The Wall"
      (1965/66) [4] {-} <29><198><283><357>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6cse9IxeNY

Group's bass, Harold Reid, died 4/24/20 at 80.

  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjPBzvvE-NQ (Beatles, 6/11/63)

Originally written & recorded by Doctor Clayton in 1941, as
"Gotta Find My Baby" (including a reference to "cocaine and reefer").
Other notable artists who released this song include B. B. King and Little
Walter. Performed twice by The Beatles in 1963 (June 11 & 29) during their
string of regular BBC broadcasts. Any of these artists were accepted,
although only Berry's version has the lyrics exactly as above.

Wrap your life

Stay distant
Or they'll tear your life apart
#T2) Tanega, Norma: "Don't Touch" (1966) [-] {-} <->
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUuVeR1AzUA

For an artist who is arguably a "one-hit wonder," Norma has tallied 3
tie-breakers in the last 6 quizzes! Here's another from that same
"Walkin' My Cat Named Dog" LP; I've heard this a few times on the radio
lately, due to its applicability to COVID-19.

________________________________________________________________________________

The following table ranks the songs from most recognized to least recognized.
The first column indicates the average number of points scored on that song
