RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #405 (GOLQ405)

Congratulations to James White, EJs and Co., and the Village Idiots, all of
whom tied for first with perfect scores. NJ/PA Trivia identified all but one
tie-breaker, the Delphi Trivia Club identified all but one regular song. James
White was the first to submit a perfect score.

The theme was time, identified by just about everyone. The average score was
387.6. Unfortunately, songs #21 and #22 were in reverse alphabetical order,
oddly a problem for the second quiz in a row. If a team identified either of
the two songs, they were given credit for both. Apologies to those who may
have spent time looking, in an identified alphabetical range, for lyrics that
didn't exist there.

The Puzzler was a tribute to Ray Charles, the solution is below.

Thanks to everyone who entered. GOLQ #406 has been posted.

 - Rich Ardini

GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #405 ANSWERS:
Answers are in the form:

#number) Artist: "Title" (chart year) [peak Pop] {peak R&B} <xxx>...<yyy>
where:
"peak Pop" = Peak position achieved on the weekly Billboard Pop chart.
"peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart.
(Billboard didn't publish an R&B chart between 11/30/63 and 1/23/65,
so recordings in that interval show peak R&B of {n/c} ("no chart").)
"xxx",...,"yyy" = prior GOLQ(s) in which the song appeared, if any.

Ain't got time to take a fast train

QM: A more psychedelic-sounding version of the Box Tops first hit.

I took off my watch
And found I had all the time in the world
#02) Association, The: "Time For Livin'" (1968) [39] {-} <70><233>

Go-oh on, go-oh on,
Until you reach the end of the line
But I know you'll pass my way again
#03) Benton, Brook: "It's Just A Matter Of Time" (1959) [3] {1} <34><218>

The name of the place, hah, is Augusta, G-A
Down there we have a good time
We don't talk, hah
We all get together, any type of weather
Then we do the Camel Walk
#04) Brown, James, and The Famous Flames: "There Was A Time"
       (1968) [36] {3} <107>

And when we take a walk
We got no time for talk
'Cause fancy talk is for the birds
#05) Checker, Chubby: "Loddy Lo" (1963/64) [12] {n/c} <103>

Spend my hours thinking of you
But I saw you late last night
You were holding another boy tight
#07) Crawford, Johnny: "Your Nose Is Gonna Grow" (1962) [14] {-} <48><157>

He slept for twenty years
Didn't bother to wake up
#08) Devotions, The: "Rip Van Winkle" (1964) [36] {n/c} <60><275>

At the end of the day
We can go down to the bay
And together hand in hand
We will walk along the sand
#09) Faithfull, Marianne: "Summer Nights" (1965) [24] {-} <105><226>

And there are new thoughts
Ready and waiting to explode
When tomorrow is today
The bells may toll for some
But nothing can change
#10) Frost, Max, and The Troopers: "Shape Of Things To Come"
       (1968) [22] {-} <83><176>
TT: Interesting tidbit from Wikipedia: Before casting Christopher Jones as
Max Frost in "Wild in the Streets," the part was offered to Phil Ochs: "After
reading the screenplay, Ochs rejected the offer, claiming the story distorted
the actual nature of the youth counterculture of the period."

And I don't mean to hurry
As long as I'm with you
We'll take it nice and easy
And use my simple plan
#11) Grass Roots, The: "Let's Live For Today" (1967) [8] {-} <4><105><238>

The company was gay, we turn'd night into day
But all that's left is a place dark and lonely
A terraced house in a mean street back of town
Becomes a shrine when I think of you only
#12) Herman's Hermits: "No Milk Today" (1967) [35] {-} <63><114><164><266>
QM: In the U.S., this was the B-side to "There's A Kind of Hush", but in many
other countries, it was an A-side Top 10, reaching #1 in Australia and Norway.
Written by Graham Gouldman.

The fog was gone the seventh day
And they saw the mornin' sun
Ten hours away from homeland
#13) Horton, Johnny: "Sink The Bismarck" (1960) [3] {-} <61><168><240>

All the time, rain or shine
You're gonna love it
I'm gonna love it
Day time, night time
Your time, my time
#14) James, Tommy, and The Shondells: "Gettin' Together"
       (1967) [18] {-} <26><269>
QM: Tommy has a great autobiography about working for a record company with
ties to organized crime. In it, Tommy talks of visiting a songwriter friend,
who plays for him this new song he's working on with Gene Pitney. Tommy liked
it and suddenly, it was his to record. There may be a movie sometime based on
that book, it's pretty entertaining.

Baby, I feel good
From the moment I arise
Feel good from morning
#15) Kinks, The: "Till The End Of The Day" (1966) [50] {-} <58><128>

And babe, don't you know it's a pity
The days can't be like the nights
#16) Lovin' Spoonful, The: "Summer In The City"
       (1966) [1] {-} <43><143><200><303>

That the carnival is over
And you've seen much better days
You have wasted too much time
Into many different plays
You deny the possibility of
Growing old
#17) McCoys, The: "Beat The Clock" (1967) [92] {-} <138>
QM: A former QM from Finland first introduced me to this song, but it was the
Finnish version he played. It was very popular there, much more so than in the
U.S.

I gotta make my own way
There's rent, I gotta pay
I need a night-time love
To get me through the day
#18) Posey, Sandy: "Single Girl" (1966/67) [12] {-} <101><210>
QM: Sandy recorded on some background sessions for Elvis Presley and then
later married an Elvis impersonator.

As I peer through the window
Of lost time
Looking over my yesterday
And all the love I gave all in vain
#19) Ross, Diana, and The Supremes: "Reflections" (1967) [2] {-} <130>

As I lie awake resting from the day
I can hear the clock passing time away
Oh, I couldn't sleep for on my mind
#20) Safaris, The: "Image Of A Girl" (1960) [6] {-} <9><156>

Get what you came for, before it's too late
Get what you came for, the meadows can wait
So every night, I'd sit alone and learn
What loneliness meant
#21) Smith, Verdelle: "Tar And Cement" (1966) [38] {-} <137><280>
QM: Like #11 above, this song was first written with Italian lyrics and then
later re-written in English for a U.S. recording.

You wake up every morning,
Go to school every day,
Spend your nights on the corner
Just passing time away
#22) Shangri-Las, The: "I Can Never Go Home Anymore"

Twenty-four little hours
Brought the sun and the flowers
Where there used to be rain
#24) Washington, Dinah: "What A Diff'rence A Day Makes"
       (1959) [8] {4} <16><227><312>

What's your name
Who's your daddy?
#25) Zombies, The: "Time Of The Season" (1969) [3] {-} <6><142><213>

------------
Tie-Breakers
------------

You've been keeping me lonely
You've been keeping me down
And I'm sitting here wondering
Why I'm still hanging around
The night's grown cold, babe
Can't you see the sign?
Ah, there's no use wasting
#T1) McGuire, Barry: "This Precious Time" (1965) [-] {-}
QM: Barry brought his friends, The Mamas and The Papas, into the studio to
sing background vocals on this and other songs on his album of the same name,
including the original recording of California Dreamin'. This led to them
getting their first recording contract with Barry's label, Dunhill. Dunhill
then had the M&Ps record California Dreamin' themselves. They used the exact
same background recording except Barry's lead vocals were replaced by Denny
Doherty and an alto flute solo replaced Barry's harmonica for the instrumental
break. This turned out to be the hit version. A Terry Knight and The Pack
version made the Bubbling Under charts.

Time it was and what a time it was, it was
A time of innocence
A time of confidences
Long ago it must be
#T2) Simon & Garfunkel: "Bookends Theme" (1968) [-] {-}
QM: From the Bookends album, this has also been paired with Old Friends on
some recordings. Like some other quiz participants perhaps, I was still in my
teens when I first heard this album that included songs and voices about
people that were then in my now current age group.

The grid solution:

It all started ...
when there were a few minutes left to fill in a four hour show and his band
had already played its entire book. He began to extemporize at the piano.
Thrilled audience members asked him where they could buy the record. Record?
There wasn't even a song! The letters in one of the columns of the grid
rearrange to spell out the title of the song that the above improvisation
turned into, WHAT'D I SAY. One of the clue answers' columns spells out the
title of a related song, the artist's biggest hit, I CAN'T STOP LOVING YOU.
And the combined letters of Clue T and its answer rearrange to spell out the
full name of the artist to whom the above story refers - The Genius himself,
RAY CHARLES ROBINSON.
I hope you enjoyed the Puzzler, but now it's over, so HIT THE ROAD JACK!
