RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #406 (GOLQ406)

Hello all. Hope that everyone is remaining in good health and had
a great Thanksgiving.

When I was putting together this quiz I was aiming for "challenging
but fun." The "challenging" part was not as strong as I
anticipated; I hope the "fun" part reached its goal. Having
said that, five entrants hit the lofty utopia of perfect scores:
Delphi Trivia, The E.J.s, James White, Navairheads, and the Village
Idiots all got 500++.

In fact, all entrants were >400, another testament to the oldies
acumen contained within this group. There were nine GOLQ "premiers"
along with quite a few obscurities, so everyone should give
themselves a pat on the back. (Every time I try to do that
my arthritis kicks in.)

Everyone identified the theme of "summer", but as I was going
through the answer sheet it dawned on me that there was an
unintended minor theme of "songs associated with motion
pictures". (Found in #3, #4, #8, #21, #T1, #T2).

So - everyone stay well and enjoy the holiday season as much as
possible. Thanks for entering the quiz

Howard Teitelbaum has already issued GOLQ 407.

               GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #406 ANSWERS:
Answers are in the form:

    #number) Artist: "Title" (chart year) [peak Pop] {peak R&B} <xxx>...<yyy>

where:
    "peak Pop" = Peak position achieved on the weekly Billboard Pop chart.
    "peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart.
        (Billboard didn't publish an R&B chart between 11/30/63 and 1/23/65,
        so recordings in that interval show peak R&B of {n/c} ("no chart").)
    "xxx",...,"yyy" = prior GOLQ(s) in which the song appeared, if any.

And tell me when the beach umbrellas
Are no longer on the sand
When leaves fall on the tennis court
We'll still be hand in hand
#01) Ames Brothers, The: "Summer Sweetheart" (1956) [67] {-}

What to do
Oh, I'm left here just crying
Over you, oh, I'm so blue
What can I do now
That you're gone
#02) Anka, Paul: "Summer's Gone" (1960) [11] {29} <84><223><313>

#03) Ball, Kenny and His Jazzmen: "The Green Leaves Of Summer" (1962)
       [67] {-}
  Song was from the movie "The Alamo", although it was the "Brothers Four"
  version and not this one.
  This was the group's last top 100 U.S. hit although they continued
  to do well in their native UK. Here is the last of their UK hits,
  "When I'm Sixty-Four" (1967), which is actually a not-bad vocal performance:

  Note the change in grandchildren's names.

Will you remember
When summer has flown
Another world, a world
That is yours alone
#04) Boone, Pat: "Anastasia" (1956/57) [37] {-}
   The "B' side of "Don't Forbid Me". From the 1956 movie of the same
   name. Not surprisingly, this was the least recognized of the regular
   songs. The "A" side made it to #1.

Newborn whippoorwills
Were calling from the hills
Summer was coming in but fast
Lots of daffodils were
Showing off their skills
#05) Cole, Nat "King": "That Sunday, That Summer" (1963) [12] {19} <121><359>

You kissed me, oh, so tenderly
And I knew this was love
And I as held you, oh, so close
I knew no one could ever
Take your place
#06) Danleers, The: "One Summer Night" (1958) [7] {4} <22><227><301>
#06) Diamonds, The: "One Summer Night" (1961) [22] {-}
   Both answers fit alphabetically. Personal choice - Danleers

Look around you, there's a rainbow
In that watermelon sky
And the twinkling of a million fireflies
Let your heart keep taking pictures
That we'll share as years go by
#07) Dove, Ronnie: "Happy Summer Days" (1966) [27] {-}

Hey, take a look at all those other cars
They're parked here just like ours
To count the stars above
It seems were not alone
I guess I should have known
Romance runs high
The last two weeks in July
#08) Four Preps, The: "Lazy Summer Night" (1958) [21] {-}
   The song was used in the MGM movie "Andy Hardy Comes Home".
   Carried the 'B' side ("Summertime Lies") onto the charts.

If I could hear no music
If there could be no roses
No summer nights to make
Me dream as I do
#09) Four Seasons, The: "And That Reminds Me (My Heart Reminds Me)"
       (1969) [45] {-}
  This is not one of the "featuring the sound of ..." titles. If you
  answered it that way, I did not take off any points.

#10) Francis, Connie: "In The Summer Of His Years" (1963) [46] {n/c}
    What a depressing little ditty this is. True confessions: although I
    have had the song in my music collection for years I have never actually
    heard it. Not on radio, jukebox or anywhere else. It only came up because
    I was searching for theme appropriate songs. Since I was completely
    unfamiliar with it I thought it would only be fair to make it
    a snippet. Of course I (once again) reckoned without this group's
    talents; everyone identified it.

#11) Gore, Lesley: "Summer And Sandy" (1967) [65] {-} <316>
    Gets my vote for possibly the worst song intro ever.

Listen to the music of the carousel
The ting-aling-alingle of the icecream bell
The splishing and the splashing and a moonlight swim
The roarin' of the waves when you're surfin'
#12) Goulet, Robert: "Summer Sounds" (1965) [58] {-}

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ406/GOLQ406-13.mp3
#13) Heywood, Eddie: "Soft Summer Breeze" (1956) [11]

Well no more studying his-tory
And no more reading geo-graphy
And no more dull geo-metry
#14) Jamies, The: "Summertime, Summertime" (1958,1962) [26,38] {-,-}
       <8><110><272>
   I recall my Mom recoiling in horror when she heard the lyrics
   "I'm sorry teacher but zip your lip". "How disrespectful."
   Now days it seems pretty benign.

She kissed me yesterday
hello the silver linin'
Got spring and summer
runnin' through me
#15) Keith: "98.6" (1966/67) [7] {-} <3><186><322><375>

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ406/GOLQ406-16.mp3
#16) Kelly, Monty And His Orchestra: "Summer Set" (1960) [30]
   This artist's only foray into the US top 100. Song was co-written
   by Mr. Acker Bilk whose own version was a bubbler (#104).

Golden sunshine
And we're glad
My little love and I
Now that summertime is nigh
#17) Lewis, Gary, and The Playboys: "Green Grass" (1966) [8] {-}
       <58><142><296><375>

Ill keep you warm in the winter
Give you cool, cool kisses in the summertime
Walk by your side in the autumn
And in the spring bells will chime
#18) Pitney, Gene: "(I Wanna) Love My Life Away" (1961) [39] {-} <57><300><375>

Does your memory stray
To a bright summer day
When I kissed you
And called you sweetheart
#19) Presley, Elvis, with The Jordanaires: "Are You Lonesome To-night?"
       (1960/61) [1] {3} <14><212><289>

All summer long we spent dancin' in the sand
And the jukebox kept on playin'
Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
#20) Rivers, Johnny: "Summer Rain" (1967/68) [14] {-} <14><139><221>
   James White opined: always bothered me when Johnny Rivers sang "The
   Juke box kept on playin' Sgt Peppers..." since the song Sgt. Peppers was
   only on an album and albums couldn't play on jukeboxes in 1967. He does
   amend it a bit in the next verse when he says "Everybody kept on playin...."

   I am aware of 45's of Sergeant Pepper's, but they were not released in
   the US and not within the time frame of the Johnny Rivers song.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ406/GOLQ406-21.mp3
#21) Rodgers, Jimmie: "The Long Hot Summer" (1958) [77] [-]
    Title song from the movie of the same name and the flip side
    of "Oh-oh I'm Falling In Love Again"
    Another one I thought was a brain buster and so was a candidate
    for snippet. No one missed it!

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ406/GOLQ406-22.mp3
#22) Sommers, Joanie: "When The Boys Get Together" (1962) [94] {-}
    In Snippet form because I thought it might be too obscure for
    lyrics. Foolish me; everyone got it.
    This was my exercise of thematic 'artistic license' I mentioned in the
    quiz intro. (My artistic license is about to expire and it
    can only be renewed at GOLQ world headquarters. Always a dreadful
    experience; license office is in the subbasement and Selma and Patty
    are the only clerks. The sign on the door says "abandon all hope" and
    they suggest I pack a lunch.)

Come and see how well despair
is seasoned by the stifling air,
See your ghetto in the good old sizzling summertime.
#23) Spanky and Our Gang: "Give A Damn" (1968) [43] {-} <63><263>
    Chosen to fit the theme and perhaps help offset any PC drubbing
    I might get for #25.

I tried so hard
All summer through
Not to think too much of you
But the more I try
The more I find
I just can't leave the past behind
#24) Springfield, Dusty: "All I See Is You" (1966) [20] {-} <108><308>

Lets Twist again,
Like we did last summer, baby
And she say
#25) Stevens, Ray: "Ahab, The Arab" (1962) [5] {9} <182><257><347

------------
Tie-Breakers
------------

He played night and day like a demon
And prayed for that one lucky day
When the lush
Royal flush of his dreamin'
Is just a game away
#T1) Charles, Ray: "The Cincinnati Kid"  (1965)[115] {-}
   From the movie of the same name. I learned from this movie
   to never be overconfident when holding a full house.

When it comes to lovin' she's a natural master
And each time she's near, well my heart beats faster
Deep down inside I know the best is yet to come
whoa, whoa, whoa
Gonna pick her up about a quarter to seven
I know we're gonna take a little trip to heaven
#T2) M.F.Q.: "This Could Be The Night" (1965) [-] {-}
   M.F.Q. = Modern Folk Quartet. Either artist answer is acceptable.
   The group's only Whitburn appearance was a 1966
   bubbler (#122) "Night Time Girl". It is a very different
   sounding recording compared to this one.

   Intended to be a "nobody-will-get-this" challenge. The
   song qualifies as a GOLQ tie-breaker because it was
   the theme for "The Big T.N.T. Show" in 1965 but was not
   publicly released on record during the GOLQ era. It popped
   up on a couple of CDs in the 70s. That and the fact
   that I chose lyrics text instead of a snippet allowed
   me to have considerable hubris that the challenge would
   not be met. Major fail on my part - 50% of you got it.

   Although it sounds like Brian Wilson was involved,
   authorship is an interesting question. Some sources list
   Harry Nilsson and Phil Spector, but the movie only lists
   Phil. Nilsson claimed that he was the sole author.
   It is only my opinion of course, but any time
   I see Phil's name as an author I really wonder what his
   contribution to the song was; he may have walked by the
   room when it was written and felt it was justification to
   take credit. It is definitely his production though. The "Wall"
   is so prominent it drowns out the vocals.

   I have also read that this song was the theme song for
   LA DJ Rodney Bingenheimer (Rodney on the ROQ), but was not
   able to confirm that with certainty. If it is the case and
   you were in southern CA in the 70s, it may have helped
   you with identifying the song.
