RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #410 (GOLQ410)

Congratulations to the Delphi Trivia Club, Vito & The Salutations, and the
Village Idiots, all of whom tied for first with perfect scores. The EJs
identified all but one tie-breaker. The Tri-State Trivia Club had a near
perfect score. The Delphi Trivia Club was the first to submit a perfect score.

The hiding-in-plain-sight theme was (series of) Hallmark Anniversary Gifts,
with each song matching to a gift from one of the first 27 years in Hallmark's
posted list. RRIB, the EJs, Will McCorry, Vito & The Salutations and the
Coasters all identified the theme.

The average score was 385.8.

Teams that submitted Puzzler answers are Delphi Trivia Club, Will McCorry, the
Coasters, and Team Teitelbaum. Delphi and Will were the only two to solve the
two related words that were the last part of the quiz. The complete Puzzler
solution is below. And thanks to Bob Bluestein for continuing to provide these
puzzlers on special occasions.

Thanks to everyone who entered. GOLQ #411 has been posted.

GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #410 ANSWERS:
Answers are in the form:

#number) Artist: "Title" (chart year) [peak Pop] {peak R&B} <xxx>...<yyy>
where:
"peak Pop" = Peak position achieved on the weekly Billboard Pop chart.
"peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart.
(Billboard didn't publish an R&B chart between 11/30/63 and 1/23/65,
so recordings in that interval show peak R&B of {n/c} ("no chart").)
"xxx",...,"yyy" = prior GOLQ(s) in which the song appeared, if any.

potential alternate theme for this quiz. Seven songs from Surrealistic Pillow

Promise her servants, a butler and maid
She'll cuddle close like a hand in a glove
#T2) Martin, Dean: "Promise Her Anything" (1958) [-] {-} <->
19th Anniversary: Jade (I could not find a Top 100 song with Jade in its proper
usage for a gift. My choices for a tie-breaker with Jade seemed limited to
this song or any number of obscure Donovan album cuts).

  Who's "Happy Jack" reached #24 in 1967.

KING:

ever quite as famous as B.B., Ben E., or Carole.

Cemetery in Paris, where Greek writing on a plaque on his gravestone
translates to "true to his own spirit".

"Questions 67 and 68" was the group's first charting single.

ROGER MILLER:
  "King Of The Road" singer-songwriter
This was the country singer's highest charting pop single.

STUART SUTCLIFFE:
  Oldest Beatle in '61
The Beatles' original bass guitarist, who died of a cerebral hemorrhage
in April, 1962, is pictured on the far left of the cover of the album
"Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band".

TRUMPET:
Hugh Masekela's musical instrument on "Grazing In The Grass"
The South African composer and political activist could also play the
  flugelhorn, cornet, and trombone.

UNION GAP:
Washington town for which Gary's group was named
Gary Puckett, though born in Minnesota, grew up in Yakima, Washington,
  adjacent to Union Gap.

VIC DAMONE:
Vocalist Frank Sinatra claimed had "the best pipes in the business"
Damone was originally cast as Johnny Fontane in "The Godfather", but quit
because "the movie was not in the best interests of Italian Americans".

WE FIVE:
Group with a single whose lyrics start, "When I woke up this morning"
1965's "You Were On My Mind" continues, "You were on my mind \ And you
  were on my mind \ I got troubles, whoa-oa \ I got worries, whoa-oa".

XIV:
Regnal Roman numeral used by novelty recording artist Jerry Samuels
Recording engineer and composer Samuels recorded "They're Coming To
Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa!" as Napoleon XIV.

YESTERDAY:
Matt Monro's October, '65 release was the first U.K. single of this song
Though released as a single in the U.S. in September, 1965, "Yesterday"
was unlike The Beatles' previous work and did not fit their image, so
they originally refused to permit the release of a single in the U.K.

ZOLA TAYLOR:
She joined David, Herb, Paul, and Tony in harmony
Zola's fellow Platters were David Lynch, Herb Reed, Paul Robi, and Tony
  Williams.

Contained within certain letters indicated by the Puzzler's instructions
are its hidden quote, it's source, and the source's famous band:

"ROCK 'N' ROLL MIGHT NOT SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS, BUT IT DOES LET YOU DANCE
ALL OVER THEM." - PETE TOWNSHEND, THE WHO

Ten other letters indicated in the instructions unscramble to spell "THE
DETOURS", the group that evolved into The Who.

A final note: The Who were briefly named "The High Numbers", as on their
first single, "Zoot Suit", but soon switched back to "The Who".

I hope that clarifies this Puzzler's solution. I CAN'T EXPLAIN any better
than that!
