The EJs identified all but one tie-breaker. The Tri-State Trivia Club had a near perfect score. The Delphi Trivia Club was the first to submit a perfect score. The hiding-in-plain-sight theme was (series of) Hallmark Anniversary Gifts, with each song matching to a gift from one of the first 27 years in Hallmark's posted list. RRIB, the EJs, Will McCorry, Vito & The Salutations and the Coasters all identified the theme. The average score was 385.8. Teams that submitted Puzzler answers are Delphi Trivia Club, Will McCorry, the Coasters, and Team Teitelbaum. Delphi and Will were the only two to solve the two related words that were the last part of the quiz. The complete Puzzler solution is below. And thanks to Bob Bluestein for continuing to provide these puzzlers on special occasions. Thanks to everyone who entered. GOLQ #411 has been posted. - Rich Ardini ______________________________________________________________________ After each score below are two characters representing the two tie-breakers: + indicates a tie-breaker answered correctly. - indicates partial credit. x indicates a totally incorrect guess. . indicates no guess. ISAAC HAYES: David Porter's co-songwriter of "Soul Man" and "Hold On, I'm Comin'" Soul singer, keyboardist, and actor Hayes went on to chart more than a dozen pop singles, including "Theme From Shaft". JACK: Name in the title of both a Rolling Stones single and a Who single The Rolling Stones' "Jumpin' Jack Flash" reached #3 in 1968, while The Who's "Happy Jack" reached #24 in 1967. KING: Jonathan, Peggy, Claude, Freddy, Anna, or Teddi King was the last name of these six unrelated singers, none of whom were ever quite as famous as B.B., Ben E., or Carole. LOVE POTION NUMBER NINE: It "looked like India ink" According to the Leiber-Stoller song, "It smelled like turpentine, it looked like Indian ink". MEMPHIS: Tennessee city in which Booker T. Jones was born The "MG" of Booker T. & the MG's stands for "Memphis Group". PARIS: Foreign city in which Jim Morrison is buried The songwriter, poet, and Doors' lead singer is buried in Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, where Greek writing on a plaque on his gravestone translates to "true to his own spirit". QUESTIONS: Chicago had 67 and 68 in '69 "Questions 67 and 68" was the group's first charting single. ROGER MILLER: "King Of The Road" singer-songwriter This was the country singer's highest charting pop single. XIV: Regnal Roman numeral used by novelty recording artist Jerry Samuels Recording engineer and composer Samuels recorded "They're Coming To Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa!" as Napoleon XIV. YESTERDAY: Matt Monro's October, '65 release was the first U.K. single of this song Though released as a single in the U.S. in September, 1965, "Yesterday" was unlike The Beatles' previous work and did not fit their image, so they originally refused to permit the release of a single in the U.K. ZOLA TAYLOR: She joined David, Herb, Paul, and Tony in harmony Zola's fellow Platters were David Lynch, Herb Reed, Paul Robi, and Tony Williams. Contained within certain letters indicated by the Puzzler's instructions are its hidden quote, it's source, and the source's famous band: "ROCK 'N' ROLL MIGHT NOT SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS, BUT IT DOES LET YOU DANCE ALL OVER THEM." - PETE TOWNSHEND, THE WHO Ten other letters indicated in the instructions unscramble to spell "THE DETOURS", the group that evolved into The Who. A final note: The Who were briefly named "The High Numbers", as on their first single, "Zoot Suit", but soon switched back to "The Who". I hope that clarifies this Puzzler's solution. I CAN'T EXPLAIN any better than that! ____________________________________________________________________________
