RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #412 (GOLQ412) Congratulations to Village Idiots, who won by a tie-breaker over Really Rockin' In Boston! The first theme, comprising 9 songs, involved a member of a famous songwriting team collaborating with other(s) instead. The theme involved #06, 07, 12, 13, 14, 17, 18, 19, 22. No one ID'd this theme, although the EJ'S guessed it as Brill Building writers, which is also substantially correct. The second ("no surprise") theme, comprising 8 songs, was my perennial HUMOR motif (as in, "Howard's Usual Morbid Obituary Ritual"). This included songs #02, 05, 08, 10, 11, 15, 20, 21. About half the entrants mentioned this theme. The EJ'S team cited several others: Song #09 (group member Lewis Edward Peeples on 12/13/20) and song #24 (21st century group member Bruce Williamson, 9/6/20). The Puzzler Solution can be found at the end. Kudos to Will McCorry for submitting the only correct puzzler answer (source of the quote). Also, a tip of the cap to Delphi, who solved almost all of the clues. Thanks again to Bob Bluestein for creating this "cherry on top" of the quiz! As always, thanks to everyone who entered. The June 2021 quiz (GOLQ #413) by Regina Litman has been posted. -- Howard Teitelbaum ________________________________________________________________________________ After each score below are two characters representing the two tie-breakers: + indicates a tie-breaker answered correctly. - indicates partial credit. x indicates a totally incorrect guess. . indicates no guess. My thought was to juxtapose two tie-breakers with very similar titles, but with styles about as disparate as possible in the GOLQ universe. Unfortunately, #T2 went unrecognized by all. ________________________________________________________________________________ The following table ranks the songs from most recognized to least recognized. The first column indicates the average number of points scored on that song (total points divided by number of entrants). The Puzzler quote: "A lot of people have accused Elvis of stealing the black man's music, when in fact, almost every black solo entertainer copied his stage mannerisms from Elvis." The associated border letters to the 12 "E" squares without an asterisk arrange to make up the source of the quote: JACKIE WILSON. Certain pairs of abutting squares in the original diagram, for example: ------------- | * | | | | | | * | | ------------- may have provided a clue to the source, since before going solo, Jackie was the lead singer of Billy Ward and His Dominoes. One final note: Jackie's admiration of Elvis was reciprocated. Elvis first saw Jackie perform in '56 with The Dominoes. Said Elvis, "I heard this guy in Las Vegas ... doin' a take-off of me - 'Don't Be Cruel'. He tried so hard, till he got much better ... than that record of mine." After Elvis became extremely famous he disliked going out to clubs, but would make an exception when he got the opportunity to see Jackie perform. The two remained friends for years. A tough Puzzler, but I hope you worked it out, baby! If not ... well, that's all right, mama! __________________________________________________________________________ Howard Teitelbaum <golq412@golq.org>
