RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #416 (GOLQ416)

Congratulations to Delphi Trivia Club, James White, and Village Idiots, who
finished in a 3-way tie for first with perfect scores. Also, a strong
4th-place finish by the EJ'S & Co., who missed only a couple of songs.

As always, thanks to everyone who entered.

I hinted that the tie-breakers were "peripherally related". Their connection is
that both songs had a lyrical fragment later borrowed by the Fab Four. This was
identified by the EJ'S and by Tom (NAVAIRHEADS). More details below ...

The October 2021 quiz (GOLQ #417) by Regina Litman will be posted soon.

GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #416 ANSWERS:
Answers are in the form:

#number) Artist: "Title" (chart year) [peak Pop] {peak R&B} <xxx>...<yyy>

where:
"peak Pop" = Peak position achieved on the weekly Billboard Pop chart.
"peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart.
(Billboard didn't publish an R&B chart between 11/30/63 and 1/23/65,
so recordings in that interval show peak R&B of {n/c} ("no chart").)
"xxx",...,"yyy" = prior GOLQ(s) in which the song appeared, if any.

#01) Angels, The: "I Adore Him" (1963) [25] {-} <67><149><208>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_7JC4EW2co

Barbara "Bibs" Allbut, who co-founded the group, died 7/11/21 at 80.

The song's B-side, "Thank You and Goodnight," briefly charted at #84.

Without going out of your door
You can know all things on earth
Without looking out of your window
You can know the ways of heaven
#02) Beatles, The: "The Inner Light" (1968) [96] {-} <177>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swT6YTPYwgM

B-side of "Lady Madonna"; the first George Harrison composition on a
Beatles single (either A- or B-side). Backing tracks were recorded while
George was in India, with vocals later added back at Abbey Road. The song
didn't appear on a Beatles album until various 1980s-onward compilations.

#03) Clark, Sanford: "The Fool" (1956) [7] {5} <19><98><289>

    Died 7/4/21 at 85.

And maybe we'll fight

#04) Corey, Jill: "I Love My Baby (My Baby Loves Me)" (1956/57) [21] {-} <->
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNqauJ9bFOM (Fred Waring, 1926)
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moTqR2taGbk (Aileen Stanley, 1926)
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_Mou6SKur4 (Jill Corey)

Died 4/3/21 at 85. She was married to Don Hoak, a third baseman who played
in the majors from 1954 to 1964 (most notably for the champion '60 Pirates).
The Vitos mentioned the Don Hoak connection.

Song was originally a hit in 1926, for Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians and also
    for Aileen Stanley.

We had a quarrel the other day
And I just let you walk away
#05) Crawford, Johnny: "Proud" (1963) [29] {-} <104><186>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BD8fKxAJGBs

    Died 4/29/21 at 75.

  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4PlyszwLLk

Group member Ernie Sierra died 3/8/20 at 77. He had been the last original
member still performing with the group. I had to wait for this song (their
only chart entry) to become eligible for re-use, hence the delayed obit.

I'll pay my fare and ride the bumper car
Those funny cars won't make the teardrops start
#07) Everly Brothers, The: "The Ferris Wheel" (1964) [72] {n/c} <->
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PopqLoWkQ8

Don Everly died 8/21/21 at 84. I'll reiterate what I wrote in GOLQ #325,
after Phil's death in 2014, which is perhaps even more apropos now that
    both brothers have passed:
Phil Everly died 1/3/14 at 74. Of all the many lofty tributes to the
Everlys I've read, my favorite remains one by musicologist/humorist
Peter Schickele (of "P.D.Q. Bach" fame), from one of his 1990s "Schickele
Mix" radio programs. After playing an Everly Brothers song, he noted:
"People always picture the heavenly choir as girl angels singing soprano.
I think they'll sound like Don and Phil."

Like him, I am doubtful
That your love is true
But if you decide to call on me
#08) Fleetwoods, The: "Mr. Blue" (1959/60) [1] {3} <29><128><248><346>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbB1Nq6QINw

Composer Dewayne Blackwell died 5/23/21 at 84. His given name is
misspelled as "Dwayne" on the label.

Turn off the tears, girl
I don't care anymore
You can save all your lies
'Cause I've heard them all before
#09) 4 Seasons, The, Featuring the "sound" of Frankie Valli:
      "Tell It To The Rain" (1966/67) [10] {-} <88><193>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYpjIBUrBHM

Group member Joe Long died 4/21/21 at 88. In late 1965, original bass Nick
Massi left the group; their arranger Charlie Calello filled in briefly, and
was then replaced by Long, who remained with the group until 1975.

Well, I never tell him that he is so unfair
'Cause he loves me and I know it
But he's just afraid to show it
#10) Gore, Lesley: "That's The Way Boys Are" (1964) [12] {n/c} <14><270>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INDzO0eX0p4

Oh, it's easy to say to strangers
That we played a game from the start
It's easy to lie to strangers
#11) Harptones, The: "What Will I Tell My Heart" (1961) [96] {-} <->
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLU0uB9jzk0 (Andy Kirk, 1937)
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ds083IpBkPQ (Fats Domino, 1957)
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFOEXamPNDw (Harptones, 1961)

The group's superb lead singer, Willie Winfield, died 7/27/21 at 91. He
continued performing until retiring in 2019. For a group held in such
(justifiably) high esteem, it's hard to imagine that this #96 was their
    only pop-chart entry.

Song was originally a hit in 1937 for several artists; first recording was
by Andy Kirk and His Clouds of Joy. In the GOLQ era, Fats Domino had a
    charting version in 1957.

And when I told her
Her kisses were not like before
#12) Jay & The Americans: "She Cried" (1962) [5] {-} <21><113><307>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16xlJU6FB6E

Co-written by Ted Daryll, who died 3/14/21 at 81.

She saves the world
There's no one bolder
She does all this
And never gets any older
#13) Kingsmen, The: "Annie Fanny" (1965) [47] {-} <291>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YeKNeNtglQ

Group's guitarist, Mike Mitchell, died 4/30/21 at 77. He was one of the
founding members in 1959, and was still playing with the group until his
    death.

As with their earlier Top-Ten hit "The Jolly Green Giant," they created new
lyrics for the melody of an existing song - in this case, "Alley Oop."
(The EJ's also cited the "Alley Oop" connection.) Somehow, group member
Lynn Easton got sole writing credit.

The titular (excuse the pun) character was from a recurring comic strip in
Playboy, "Little Annie Fanny" - a racy parody of "Little Orphan Annie."

Ah, twist them hips (twist them hips)
Let your backbone slip (let your backbone slip)
Now, move your feet (move your feet)
Get on the beat (get on the beat)
#14) Lance, Major: "The Monkey Time" (1963) [8] {2} <58><120>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAX5GB2hcRA

I know you're mad
'Cause I was wrong
But that's no reason
To say "so long"
#15) Morgan, Jaye P.: "Pepper-Hot Baby" (1955/56) [14] {-} <->
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhndEr_25aU (Jaye P. Morgan)
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dj0hxVaum7s (Gisele MacKenzie)

A two-sided hit with "If You Don't Want My Love." Version by Gisele
MacKenzie charted at the same time; either artist was fine. This proved to
be the hardest song on the quiz.

I'm just as blue as a sad old song
Night and day, everything go wrong
There's only one thing left for me to do
Try not to think about you
#16) Price, Lloyd: "Lady Luck" (1960) [14] {3} <228>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMUU_VNNHng

    Died 5/3/21 at 88.

I tried to take the chance
To feel the thrill of romance and love
And I let my foolish heart become enchanted by starlight above
#17) Ray, Johnnie: "I'll Never Fall In Love Again" (1959) [75] {-} <->
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAxhtA7KTDI

His own composition; unrelated to same-titled songs written by
Bacharach/David (Dionne Warwick) and Lonnie Donegan (Tom Jones).

And Mr. Baker, can you tell us why your secretary had to leave this town?
#18) Riley, Jeannie C.: "Harper Valley P.T.A."
      (1968) [1] {-} <52><198><251><388>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-LI11_Iyss

The best-known of many songs written by Tom T. Hall, who died 8/20/21 at 85.

Didn't you know
It wouldn't be so easy
Letting you go
#19) Royalettes, The: "It's Gonna Take A Miracle" (1965) [41] {28} <75>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7tPsDKy1Tw4

Song was originally intended for Little Anthony & The Imperials, who never
recorded it due to a contractual dispute with their label. The 1982 version
    by Deniece Williams hit #10 pop & #1 R&B.

Come back baby, 'cause I'm all alone
Come back darlin', 'cause I-I need your love
Come back, 'cause I wanna love ya
Girl, I wanna love ya tonight
#20) Seeds, The: "Can't Seem To Make You Mine" (1967) [41] {-} <87><194>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lM2XfNgVlfs

When you hold me in your arms so tight
You let me know everything's all right
#21) Thomas, B. J.: "Hooked On A Feeling" (1968/69) [5] {-} <13><225>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3i3ch1EZ_Ak

    Died 5/29/21 at 78.

Jonathan King added the hideous "ooga-shaka" chants to his 1971 version of
the song (a #23 U.K. hit); this audio graffiti also marred the 1974
rendition by Blue Swede (a U.S. #1 hit).

Girl, why should it be
That you don't notice me
Can I dance with you?
#22) Troggs, The: "With A Girl Like You" (1966) [29] {-} <43><143><260>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjbgOE248gM

#T1) McCoys, The: "Sorrow" (1965) [-] {-} <->
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XN0Hm76lhn8 (McCoys, 1965)
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z63gnR7WQio (Merseys, 1966)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zc3idF_IZ0 (Beatles, "It's All Too Much")

The B-side of their top-10 hit "Fever". The Merseys' 1966 version hit #4 in
the UK, but didn't chart stateside. Either artist was acceptable. A few
entrants detected a similarity to The Valentinos/Rolling Stones song
    "It's All Over Now."

George Harrison quoted "With your long blonde hair and your eyes of blue"
in "It's All Too Much" from "Yellow Submarine".

Well, you may go to college
You may go to school
You may have a big Cadillac
But don't you be nobody's fool
#T2) Presley, Elvis, Scotty & Bill: "Baby Let's Play House" (1955) [-] {-} <->
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zF-HkpAB_z4 (Arthur Gunter, 1954)
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbUdtzMD10w (Elvis, 1955)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzHXtxcIkg4 (Beatles, "Run For Your Life")

    B-side of "I'm Left, You're Right, She's Gone". Written & first recorded
in 1954 by Arthur Gunter (a #12 R&B hit in early '55). The 3rd line is
possibly "pink Cadillac" rather than "big Cadillac"; either way, it's an
interesting change from Gunter's original line: "You may get religion."

John Lennon used the line "I'd rather see you dead, little girl, than to be
with another man" in "Run For Your Life" from "Rubber Soul".
