Congratulations to the EJ's and the Village Idiots, both teams having identified all 25 songs and artists in the main part of the quiz, as well as both tie breakers. Overall, with the exception of a stumper, this proved to be a relatively easy quiz. Seven songs were identified by every team, and most teams identified a high percentage of the remaining songs. Once again, my tiebreakers turned out to be ineffective tiebreakers, in that many teams identified both. However, my #22 fulfilled the role of tiebreaker, in that only the top two teams correctly identified "Wednesday," a quality non-novelty song by the Royal Guardsmen that I thought would have been more successful in its day. I missed seeing entries from several "regulars," but as always, thanks to everyone who entered. Rich Ardini posted GOLQ419, which contains another puzzler from Bob Bluestein. - Tom Pillion ________________________________________________________________________________ After each score below are two characters representing the two tie-breakers: + indicates a tie-breaker answered correctly. - indicates partial credit. x indicates a totally incorrect guess. . indicates no guess. "peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart. (Billboard didn't publish an R&B chart between 11/30/63 and 1/23/65, so recordings in that interval show peak R&B of {n/c} ("no chart").) "xxx",...,"yyy" = prior GOLQ(s) in which the song appeared, if any. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- When you know you're lonely You're not the one and only #01) Anka, Paul: "It's Time To Cry" (1959/60) [4] {13} <37><253> But when you discover that your life is dreary Don't you come a-knockin' on my door Why, I'll be all dolled up and singin' that song that says You dog, I told you so #02) Armstrong, Louis: "So Long Dearie" (1964) [56] {n/c} <286> Last night I was blind But today I see I did you wrong #03) Bare, Bobby: "Shame On Me" (1962) [23] {-} <192> I wonder why nobody don't like me Or is it the fact that I'm ugly? #04) Belafonte, Harry: "Mama Look At Bubu" (1957) [11] {10} <35><258> You've grown tired And now you say we're through #05) Charles, Ray: "Born To Lose" (1962) [41] {-} <229> I lived my life and shunned the naked light of day And only now I see the years ran away #06) Clark, Roy: "Yesterday, When I Was Young" (1969) [19] {-} <133><354> Hip! This single was taken from their "Both Sides Of An Evening" album, which featured traditional songs and standards. This beautiful song was written in 1932 by favorite songwriters of mine, Jimmy McHugh and Dorothy Fields ("I'm In The Mood For Love," and "On The Sunny Side Of The Street," and more). I like the Everly's version, although the song and the album were not as well received as most of their previous material. When my bankroll is getting small I think of when I had none at all And I fall asleep #11) Fisher, Eddie: "Count Your Blessings (Instead Of Sheep)" (1954/55) [5] {-} <269> And night after night As strange as it seems The sound of her laughter Will sing in your dreams #12) Jay & The Americans: "Some Enchanted Evening" (1965) [13] {-} <105><236> I gave that notion up the day A lumberjack came in, and it wasn't to pray #13) Kingston Trio, The: "Reverend Mr. Black" (1963) [8] {15} <133><253> I couldn't sleep at all last night Just a-thinking of you #14) Lewis, Bobby: "Tossin' And Turnin'" (1961) [1] {1} <6><232><344> It's starrin' me and my sweet dream 'Cause she's the one makes me feel this way #15) Lovin' Spoonful, The: "Daydream" (1966) [2] {-} <57><173><329> I warned her of the dangers Don't speak to strangers Did by chance She find new romance #16) Miller, Roger: "Engine Engine #9" (1965) [7] {-} <61> Crowded streets, busy feet hustle by him Downtown shoppers, Christmas is nigh #17) Orbison, Roy: "Pretty Paper" (1963/64) [15] {-} <78><322> When the world outside my house is pulling us apart Press your lips to mine and hold me with your heart #18) Pitney, Gene: "True Love Never Runs Smooth" (1963) [21] {-} <188><338> How come every time I'm with her She whispers so soft and low It makes me want to jump and holler And bump my head into a door #19) Price, Lloyd: "I'm Gonna Get Married" (1959) [3] {1} <6><175> Heal the sick, raise the dead Make the little girls talk out of their heads #20) Rivers, Johnny: "Seventh Son" (1965) [7] {-} <56><117> Here's a chance to change your mind 'Cause I'll be gone a long long time #21) Rolling Stones, The: "The Last Time" (1965) [9] {-} <52><138><273> Every time I call on you It seems it's positively true That you've been out with someone I once knew #22) Royal Guardsmen, The: "Wednesday" (1967) [97] {-} <294> Tonight I'll sing my songs again And I'll play the game and pretend #23) Simon & Garfunkel: "Homeward Bound" (1966) [5] {-} <52><290> He says her lips are warm Each time they kiss goodnight And just as sweet as any lips can be #24) Tillotson, Johnny: "Jimmy's Girl" (1961) [25] {-} <212> Think of me When you're away Call me darling Just once a day #25) Wilson, Jackie: "I'll Be Satisfied" (1959) [20] {6} <35><258> Well, sometimes, I might get drunk Walk like a duck and smell like a skunk #T1) Dylan, Bob: "I Shall Be Free" (1963) [-] {n/c} <-> Note: From his "Freewheelin'" album I don't know why my heart flips I only know it does I wonder why I love you, Baby I guess it's just because #T2). Also accepted Buddy Holly as a correct artist. FYI: Jordanaires were not featured on this song, but I did not deduct points, since it was.a tiebreaker that affected no one's relative position in the standings. =========================================================================== The following table ranks the songs from most recognized to least recognized. The first column indicates the average number of points scored on that song (total points divided by number of entrants).
