RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #420 (GOLQ420)

Congratulations to 4 entrants who tied for first place with almost-perfect
scores: Delphi Trivia Club, Really Rockin' in Boston, Village Idiots, and
Will McCorry. Just behind were Tri-State Trivia and The Coasters. Song #T2
was a complete stumper.

In addition to several other tributes to the recently departed, there were two
such people who were referenced three times each:

  1) Bassist Bob Moore, who died 9/22/21 at 88. He played on a zillion records
  (Wikipedia says over 17,000), but I selected 3 for this quiz: #05, 14, 17.
He also had one charting song under his own name ("Mexico").

  2) Songwriter/singer Lori Burton, who died 5/19/21 at 80. I included 3 songs
that she co-wrote with Pam Sawyer (#12, 18, 25). She released a handful of
singles & an LP under her own name, plus one (with Sawyer) as The Whyte Boots.

The other minor theme was inspired by this being quiz number 420. Thus, there
were 8 songs containing references to "grass" or "weed" or "smoke" (in title,
artist, or lyrics): #02, 04, 08, 12, 14, 18, 19, 24. Song #T1 also fits this
theme (see notes). For the record, I only tried the alluded-to item twice in
college, so I'm a complete poseur on the topic! RRiB & The Coasters ID'd the
grass/weed/smoke/marijuana theme, but no one mentioned the "420" connection.
See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/420_(cannabis_culture)

As if to punctuate the "420" theme, actor Howard Hesseman passed away on 1/29/22
at age 81. Both he and his most famous character, Dr. Johnny Fever of "WKRP in
Cincinnati," were avid partakers.

The Puzzler Solution can be found at the end. Kudos to Will McCorry,
The Coasters, and The EJs for solving it. And thanks again to Bob Bluestein for
creating it.

As always, thanks to everyone who entered.

The February 2022 quiz (GOLQ #421) by Regina Litman has been posted.

GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #420 ANSWERS:
Answers are in the form:

#number) Artist: "Title" (chart year) [peak Pop] {peak R&B} <xxx>...<yyy>

where:
"peak Pop" = Peak position achieved on the weekly Billboard Pop chart.
"peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart.
(Billboard didn't publish an R&B chart between 11/30/63 and 1/23/65,
so recordings in that interval show peak R&B of {n/c} ("no chart").)
"xxx",...,"yyy" = prior GOLQ(s) in which the song appeared, if any.

  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYCIQgN3lZ8

Tom (NAVAIRHEADS) noted: "One of my all-time favorite songs. Wildweeds
were local to the Hartford, CT area and played a mixer in a small room, for
maybe 100 people at the most, at my Springfield (MA) College, while this
song was Number one on the Hartford/Springfield pop charts. Our school had
contracted them several months before the record came out, and they were
unknown, so we got them quite inexpensively. I stood in front of them with
my mouth agape while they played this song, which sounded as good, live, as
on the record. Group never made it nationally, which was a shame."

Also, see RRiB's comment re: song #20.

Yeah! I admit you got the biggest brown eyes
And you know how to part your lips to tantalize, sure
Yeah! You can get any man you want goin'
And you do it, and don't say you don't know you do it

Tie-Breakers

Come down off your throne and leave your body alone
Somebody must change
You are the reason I've been waiting so long
Somebody holds the key
#T1) Blind Faith: "Can't Find My Way Home" (1969) [-] {-} <->
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jlLBs6YawM (original LP version)
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eoSn2Y-b6wI (Steve Winwood live)

This short-lived supergroup produced one album, went on one tour, then
disbanded. The first link shows the US album cover, which replaced the
original controversial cover art. More on that topic here:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blind_Faith_(Blind_Faith_album)

Although it doesn't explicitly mention smoke, grass, or weed, this song
clearly fits the "420" theme, per its chorus: "And I'm wasted and I can't
    find my way home."

Well, I wonder, I wonder
Could it be my Ma?
Callin' me so loud and clear
From the house so far
#T2) Little Joe The Thriller: "The Echoes Keep Calling Me" (1957) [-] {-} <->
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ipgYTQg2Qg

The follow-up to "Peanuts"; not only are there stylistic similarities to the
earlier song, but Peanut herself is mentioned several times. Not sure if
the group had officially disbanded, but note the change in artist billing
(vs. "Little Joe & The Thrillers"). This song stumped everyone!

PUZZLER SOLUTION
----------------

Congratulations to all those who solved this Woodstock-themed Puzzler!

The clue answers:

A) Creedence Clearwater Revival started their Woodstock set with "Born
   On The BAYOU".
B) Leslie West and Felix Pappalardi were vocalists in the band MOUNTAIN,
which released its big hit "Mississippi Queen" a few months after
   the festival.
C) Country Joe McDonald and The Fish's audience participation "'Fish'
Cheer" ("Give me an 'F', ..." [except that F-I-S-H was replaced
with a different "F" word]) was followed by their anti-war protest
song "I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-To-DIE Rag" ("And it's one, two, three,
   what are we fightin' for?").
D) This puzzle's THEME is "Woodstock".
E) Doug CLIFFORD was Creedence's drummer.
F) Stu COOK was Creedence's bass player.
G) White Lake, a hamlet in the town of BETHEL, New York, was the site
   of the festival.
H) "Darling Be HOME Soon" was a '67 hit for Sebastian's Lovin' Spoonful.
I) SWEETWATER arrived at the festival late, having been stuck in traffic.
J) In The Who's "Pinball Wizard", the singer has played the silver ball
   from SOHO down to Brighton.
K) The Grease Band was Joe COCKER's backing group.
L) John and Tom FOGERTY were half of Creedence.
M) Santana hit #9 with "EVIL WAYS", released a few months after Woodstock.
N) In Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's Woodstock performance of "Wooden
Ships" (co-written by David Crosby and Stephen Stills), the line
"Say, can I have some of your PURPLE berries?" was sung. In Jefferson
Airplane's performance of the song (of which Paul Kantner was the
third co-writer), the line sung was "You must try some of my purple
   berries".
O) "I WISH I Could Have Been There (Woodstock)" was on John Denver's
'70 album "Whose Garden Was This".
P) In Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit", the dormouse said "FEED your
   head".
Q) The statement was a CLUE.
R) Jefferson Airplane released "VOLUNTEERS", which contained "Wooden
   Ships", three months after Woodstock.

The grid solution:

"While you were playing you could feel the presence of invisible time
travelers from the future who had come back to see Woodstock."

The letters in one of the columns of the grid rearrange to spell out
MELANIE, who took The Incredible String Band's slot when the British
psychedelic folk band refused to play during a rainstorm. Melanie
later wrote "Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)" about her feelings as she
looked out upon the sea of people in the audience. The letters of
a second grid column rearrange to spell out THE DOORS, who declined
an invitation to perform at Woodstock and later regretted it. Drummer
John Densmore did attend, but did not perform.

One of the clue answers' columns spells out MITCHELL. Joni canceled
her planned Woodstock performance to avoid missing a scheduled
appearance on The Dick Cavett Show. A second column spells out NASH.
Graham was Joni's then-boyfriend and relayed to her his account of
the festival. This, along with television reports, inspired her to
write the song "Woodstock", which was recorded and released as a
single months later by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. A third column
spells out part of the song's lyrics: "We are stardust / We are golden /
And we've got to get ourselves BACK TO THE GARDEN".

Bonus question answers:

1) JETHRO TULL didn't perform at Woodstock because Ian Anderson
"didn't want to spend [his] weekend in a field of unwashed hippies".
2) QUILL played to an enthusiastic crowd, but because of a recording
problem, the band did not appear in the documentary film "Woodstock",
and that lack of anticipated publicity contributed to the group's
   disbanding next year.
3) Jimi HENDRIX and his temporary group "Gypsy Sun and Rainbows" ended
Woodstock with "Hey Joe" as an encore.
4) Singer Joan BAEZ was six months pregnant at Woodstock.

One final anecdote from Woodstock:

As the Grateful Dead were beginning to play the final song of their
set, some random person wandered up to the microphone and started
rambling on and on that aside from the Atlantic and Pacific, there was
a third coast in the middle of the country. Eventually, someone lit up
a joint and walked up and handed it to him. The intruder took a big
hit, passed it back, then disappeared into the unknown from which he
came. Unfazed, the band continued on with their over-half-an-hour-long
performance of "Turn On Your Love Light".

Wishing you peace and music.
