GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #423 ANSWERS:
Answers are in the form:

#number) Artist: "Title" (chart year) [peak Pop] {peak R&B} <xxx>...<yyy>
where:
"peak Pop" = Peak position achieved on the weekly Billboard Pop chart.
"peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart.
(Billboard didn't publish an R&B chart between 11/30/63 and 1/23/65,
so recordings in that interval show peak R&B of {n/c} ("no chart").)
"xxx",...,"yyy" = prior GOLQ(s) in which the song appeared, if any.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

No broken hearts for us
'Cause we love each other
And with our faith and trust
There could be no other
#01) Avalon, Frankie: "Why" (1959/60) [1] {6} <46><234><354>

Then let me know
If you don't feel that your love is real
Tell me, although you'll hurt me so
Funny how a word can mean everything
#02) Benton, Brook: "Think Twice" (1961) [11] {6} <129>

Wish they hadn't seen you walk away
And heard me beg you "Stay, please stay"
Why, why did we choose this crowded place
They all know it 'cause I show it in my face
#03) Clark, Dave, Five: "Everybody Knows" (1967/68) [43] {-} <73><250>
QM: Lenny Davidson is the lead vocal, one of the few DC5 songs without Mike
Smith as lead. The song reached #2 in Great Britain. The song was first written
for a female singer. Neither the DC5 version or a later Englebert Humperdinck
cover changed the pronouns, similar to You Better Sit Down Kids by Cher.

The lights, so much brighter there
#04) Clark, Petula: "Downtown" (1964/65) [1] {-} <10><98>

When I've got time
I'll slip you a kiss
I'll keep you around
You'll always be found
#05) Como, Perry: "You're Following Me" (1961) [92] {-} <->
QM: When I saw this title to go with #14, a theme was born.

You've been fillin' me all full of lies
Tomorrow will not change your shameful deed
You will bear someone else's fertile seed
#06) Crow: "Evil Woman Don't Play Your Games With Me" (1969/70) [19] {-} <141>

He's a king
#07) Crystals, The: "Uptown" (1962) [13] {18} <15><104>

I don't want their sympathy
You go to parties, dances and shows
I still love you
#08) Dion and The Belmonts: "No One Knows" (1958) [19] {12} <41><225>

You took me by surprise
You didn't realize
#09) Guess Who, The: "Laughing" (1969) [10] {-} <78><220><324>

From your love, I'll never be free
You'll always be a part of me
These memories just won't give me time
There's always something here to remind me
#10) Hughes, Fred: "Oo Wee Baby, I Love You" (1965) [23] {3} <92><202>

But someone picked you from the bunch
One glance was all it took
#11) Jackson 5, The: "I Want You Back" (1969/70) [1] {1} <74><203><320>

You think that you're such a smart girl
And I'll believe what you say
But who do you think you are, girl
To lead me on this way
Hey
#12) Knickerbockers, The: "Lies" (1965/66) [20] {-} <13><138><301>

And then we're lying, beneath a shady tree
I love him and he's loving me
It feels good to know he's looking fine
I'm so proud to know that he is mine
#13) Longet, Claudine: "Good Day Sunshine" (1967) [100] {-} <->

There isn't an ocean too deep
A mountain so high it can keep me away

As you stopped to say hello
Oh, you wished me well
#15) Orbison, Roy: "Crying" (1961) [2] {-} <40><207><350>

Well he saw Don and Phil as they were gathered around
And then they looked at him, they called him Cathy's Clown
#16) Orlons, The: "Not Me" (1963) [12] {8} <67><126><297><332>
QM: A Bubbling Under song for Gary (U.S.) Bonds in 1961 (#116).

As you turned you back on me
You hid the light of day
#17) Peter and Gordon: "I Don't Want To See You Again" (1964) [16] {n/c}

Come on take a little walk with me
#18) Quicksilver Messenger Service: "Who Do You Love" (1969) [91] {-} <213>

By the look in my eyes
Can't you tell, can't you tell
#19) Reese, Della: "Don't You Know" (1959/60) [2] {1} <72><186><288>

The times you didn't show up
The time you didn't call
Who was left alone through it all
#20) Skip & Flip: "It Was I" (1959) [11] {-} <30><86><196><303>

But neither one will ever give in
So we gaze at an eight by ten
Thinking 'bout the things that might have been
#21) South, Joe: "Games People Play" (1969) [12] {-} <97><235><294>
QM: Grammy winner for 1969, it features an electric sitar similar to Cry Like A
Baby by the Box Tops. Some early tape versions had an extra two-minute
instrumental 'outro' of this song to fill out an album side. That extended
version is now available on YouTube.

I went away to college
You said you'd wait for me
Then I got your letter
Asking me to set you free
#22) Vinton, Bobby: "Rain Rain Go Away" (1962) [12] {-} <88><284>

No matter what you do
Someday when life is through
They're gonna bury you
Beneath the cold, cold ground, girl
Big or small or short or fat or tall
It's gonna get us all
Someday we're gonna fall
#23) Williams, Andy: "Ain't It True" (1965) [67] {-} <->

But I love you
Always treat me like a fool
Kick me when I'm down
That's your rule
#24) Wonder, Stevie: "I Don't Know Why" (1969) [40] {16} <->
QM: B-side to My Cherie Amour, some versions show title as I Don't Know Why I
Love You.

And I wish there was something you would do
To try to make me change my mind and stay
#25) Wonder Who?, The: "Don't Think Twice" (1965/66) [12] {-} <25><281>
QM: For one week, Frankie Valli had four songs on the Top 100 under three names
and three labels. The 1/15/66 chart has #15 Let's Hang On and #60 Little Boy
(In Grown Up Clothes) by the 4 Seasons, #96 (You're Gonna) Hurt Yourself by
Frankie Valli, and this song at #36.
TT: Bob Dylan's 1963 original, and PP&M's '63 cover, give the title as "Don't
Think Twice, It's All Right." At start of the 1st line here, Dylan sings
"But", while PP&M & TWW sing it as "Still" (not "And"). I always thought it odd
that this version omits "or say" from the end of the 1st line; it makes an
awkward non-rhyme with the following line.

------------
Tie-Breakers

Everybody over at the Avalon Ballroom in the San Francisco Bay
Everybody have, have, have, have, have a lot of fun, I know
I can tell you they are feeling
Gotta try the feeling, baby
Gotta try, gotta try to feel it, you gotta
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa-a
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa-a
#T1) Big Brother and The Holding Company: "Combination of The Two" (1968)
       [-] {-} <->
RR: From the album "Cheap Thrills"
QM: For me, and probably others, this song was the first time I heard the voice
of Janis Joplin. The album cut preceded Piece of My Heart on the local
'underground' radio stations at the time. Despite the Bill Graham band
introduction, this is not a live recording.

One pair of matching bookends
Different as night and day
#T2) Skip-Jacks: Cousins (1966) [-] {-} <->
Several: Theme From "The Patty Duke Show". The Skip-Jacks also recorded the
Flintstones theme.
