The EJ's were followed closely by the Village Idiots, who missed only the artist in T2. The Delphi Trivia Club, Tri-State, and Mike Weaver also had near perfect scores, being tripped up only by my #13 stumper. Thirteen songs were identified by every team, and most teams identified a high percentage of the remaining songs. Thanks to all who entered. - Tom Pillion ________________________________________________________________________________ After each score below are two characters representing the two tie-breakers: + indicates a tie-breaker answered correctly. - indicates partial credit. x indicates a totally incorrect guess. . indicates no guess. "peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart. (Billboard didn't publish an R&B chart between 11/30/63 and 1/23/65, so recordings in that interval show peak R&B of {n/c} ("no chart").) "xxx",...,"yyy" = prior GOLQ(s) in which the song appeared, if any. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You are the answer to my prayer I want to love you and I swear To live my life with one desire #01) Aquatones, The: "You" (1958) [21] {11} <21><100><178> Wanted t' go to Maine Got a ticket on a DC plane #02) Baker, LaVern, and The Gliders: "Jim Dandy" (1956/57) [17] {1} <74><153> I wonder wonder if you love me Guess I'll ask a star above me When the moon is bright canary yellow #03) Billy & Lillie: "Lucky Ladybug" (1958/59) [14] {-} <121><328> Your separate parts are not unknown But the way you assemble them's all your own #04) Boone, Pat: "Bernardine" (1957) [14]{-} <70> I was a mere lad of sixteen I've aged a year since then #05) Cooke, Sam: "Only Sixteen" (1959) [28] {13} <26><220><313> Think of your fellow man Lend him a helping hand #06) DeShannon, Jackie: "Put A Little Love In Your Heart" (1969) [4] {-} <121><385> Why don't you mind your own business Shut your lip, lip, lip I know when my girl Gimme the slip, slip, slip #07) Di Muci, Dion: "Drip Drop" (1963/64) [6] {n/c} <80><169><229> You can smile Every smile for the man who held your hand 'neath the pale moonlight #08) Drifters, The: "Save The Last Dance For Me" (1960/61) [1] {1} <28><147><290> So darling hold me close to you And love me, love me #09) Edwards, Tommy: "Love Is All We Need" (1958/59) [15] {-} <177> (Spoken:) The picnics at the park The boat rides on the lake The way we danced all night #10) Francis, Connie: "Together" (1961) [6] {-} <254><394> Is everybody safe Has everybody got a place to hide Is everybody warm inside #11) Harris, Richard: "The Yard Went On Forever" (1968) [64] {-} <192> Note: Again, apologies to Mike Weaver for my including #11 in this quiz. I say this because, in one of my previous quizzes, he informed me that, along with Richard Harris's version of MacArthur Park, this has to be one of the worst songs to hit the charts during the GOLQ Era...thanks, Mike, for still agreeing to play! I was a big fan of Jimmy Webb back in those days, but I have to agree with Mike that the lyrics in those two songs are a bit "over the top." I say everybody's got to have their day And don't you know that #12) Herman's Hermits: "Listen People" (1966) [3] {-} <3><177><313> Let me tell you how I've missed you so I didn't want you to go 'Cause I love you so #13) Johnson, Bubber: "Come Home" (1955) [92] {9} <-> Note: I am surprised that his stumper was not a bigger hit on Billboard...well done, IMHO. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BysN4jMOxA Come all without Come all within #14) Manfred Mann: "Mighty Quinn (Quinn The Eskimo)" (1968) [10] {-} <52><102><301> Bom, ma ba bom Ba bom ba bom bom Ba ma bom ba ba bom Ba dangy dang dang Ba dingy dong ding #15) Marcels, The: "Blue Moon" (1961) [1] {1} <26><141> Note: I wasn't sure if I accurately captured all the "Bam, ma ba mom's" correctly, but since no entrant missed this song, I guess I got close enough! Oh how I loved her, heaven knows But though my heart was true, It would never do Party life was what she chose #16) Martino, The: "Painted, Tainted Rose" (1963) [15] {?} <-> Afraid to lose If he came back Which one would you choose #17) Orbison, Roy: "Running Scared" (1961) [1] {-} <27><209><344> My love I offer you now My heart and all it can give For just as long as I live #18) Presley, Elvis: "I'm Yours" (1965) [11] {-} <189> Note: A personal favorite of mine that I first heard and came to like on his 1962 "Pot Luck" album, three years prior to its release as a single 'Cause I've got the real love The kind that you need #19) Rolling Stones, The: "Time Is On My Side" (1964/65) [6] {n/c} <34><212><302> When will they learn that a heart doesn't draw a line Nothing matters if I am yours and you are mine #20) Rondo, Don: "Two Different Worlds" (1956/57) [19] {?} <-> I do believe it I do believe it's true Mmm, mmm Woah, Oh Mmm #21) Simon & Garfunkel: "At The Zoo" (1967) [16] {-} <65><253><318> No muscle-bound man could take my hand #22) Wells, Mary: "My Guy" (1964) [1] {n/c} <5><209><287><357> I don't want a fancy gal with powder and paint And I don't want a woman who thinks she's a saint #23) Wilson, Jackie: "A Woman, A Lover, A Friend" (1960) [15] {1} <144> Really Couldn't get away too soon No, no, no, no #24) Young Rascals, The: "Groovin'" (1967) [1] {3} <52><206><350> I know you found out she's been cheatin' And I heard she even told you she was untrue How does it feel being on the outside, looking in #25) Yuro, Timi: "What's A Matter Baby (Is It Hurting You)" (1962) [12] {16} <33><130><275> ------------ Tie-Breakers ------------ And now the time has come And so, my love, I must go And though I lose a friend In the end you will know #T1) Beatles, The: "I'll Follow The Sun" (1964/65) <-> Note: Not much of a tie-breaker, in that every entrant correctly identified this song. Howard writes: Paul says he wrote the song (presumably in less-polished form) when he was around 16, hence approximately in 1958. Recorded in October '64 & released that December on "Beatles for Sale" (UK) and "Beatles '65 (US). The nicest part of any melody Is when you're dancing close to me #T2) Brewer, Teresa: "Music! Music! Music!" (1950) <-> Note: Debut hit that reached #1; Teresa re-recorded it several times in subsequent years, once in the early 1970's, but it never charted again. Also accepted Petula Clark, who made an obscure recording in 1949, as a valid artist. Ineligible artists, because their versions charted, were the Sensations (#54 in 1961, and with slightly different lyrics) and the and the Happenings (#96) in 1968. ============================================================================ The following table ranks the songs from most recognized to least recognized. The first column indicates the average number of points scored on that song (total points divided by number of entrants). For comparison purposes, tie- breakers are scored here on the usual 20-point scale. Avg.
