RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #428 (GOLQ428)

Congratulations to Mike Weaver, Tri-State Trivia, The Delphi Trivia Club, and
the Village Idiots, all of whom tied for first with perfect scores. The EJ's and
Co. were just one song off. Mike Weaver was the first to submit a perfect score.
The theme or riddle was songs that at some point charted in September. I used
several Whitburn books for the quiz, including The Hot 100 Chart compilations
(published by decade), the Top Pop Singles and the Bubbling Under singles.
Sadly, I don't see the need now to buy another Whitburn book.
The average score was 432.0.
Teams that submitted Puzzler answers are Delhi Trivia Club, Will McCorry and
Team Teitelbaum. The complete Puzzler solution is below. And thanks to Bob
Bluestein for continuing to provide these puzzlers.
Thanks to everyone who entered. GOLQ #429 has been posted.

GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #428 ANSWERS:
Answers are in the form:

#number) Artist: "Title" (chart year) [peak Pop] {peak R&B} <xxx>...<yyy>
where:
"peak Pop" = Peak position achieved on the weekly Billboard Pop chart.
"peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart.
(Billboard didn't publish an R&B chart between 11/30/63 and 1/23/65,
so recordings in that interval show peak R&B of {n/c} ("no chart").)
"xxx",...,"yyy" = prior GOLQ(s) in which the song appeared, if any.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That I am not going to be the one to share your schemes
#01) Association, The: "Cherish" (1966) [1] {-} <2><137><205><280><348>

Walk right on in
Stretch out your arms
Let the lovelight shine
On my soul, baby
#02) Banks, Darrell: "Open The Door To Your Heart" (1966) [27] {2} <110>

And still dig those sounds (still dig those -censored?- sounds)
#03) Beach Boys, The: "When I Grow Up (To Be A Man)" (1964) [9] {n/c} <55><171>
QM: The censored? bit was just a reminiscence about songs where people thought
they heard something that at that time was banned, etc. Louie, Louie is the
prime example here. But I remember two other songs discussed in the obscure
newsgroups of the times. One was Gary US Bonds: Quarter To Three, supposedly in
the shouting from the stage at the beginning. The other was this song, where a
distinctive voice joins in the lyrics above, singing something like 'rocking
sounds'. Anyway, likely nothing to see (or hear) here, just a memory from the
60s.

We fell in love on a Sunday morning
All at once, I heard angels singing, singing Hallelujah
Singing Hallelujah, Hallelujah
#04) Box Tops, The: "I Met Her In Church" (1968) [37] {-} <146>

One rainy morning, dark and gray
A soul winged its way to heaven
#05) Browns, The: "The Three Bells" (1959) [1] {10} <18><130><259><336>

Your nose is longer than a telephone wire
Ask me, baby, why I'm sad
You've been out all night, know you've been bad
#06) Castaways, The: "Liar, Liar" (1965) [12] {-} <46><159><305>

Well I need you girl, by my side
Oh little girl, will you like to take a ride now
#07) Count Five: "Psychotic Reaction" (1966) [5] {-} <9><89>

I won't be your second choice
I've got to be your number one
Or I ain't gonna love you at all
#08) Deal, Bill, & The Rhondels: "What Kind Of Fool Do You Think I Am"
        (1969) [23] {-} <52><149>
QM: Bill Deal added a polka-like sound to this Tams song.

Oh, there you are
Lighting up the sky
I need a love
Oh me, oh me, oh my-y-y-y
#09) Elegants, The: "Little Star" (1958) [1] {1} <15><111><174><350>

Keep hearing the part that used to touch our hearts
Staying (together forever)
Darling (breaking up never)
#10) Four Tops, The: "It's The Same Old Song" (1965) [5] {2} <12><227><348>

Aw man, will you put down that thing
You got in your hand
And find your hole and get in it
I'm gonna say this one more time
5-10-15-20
#11) Hill, Bunker: "Hide & Go Seek, Part 1" (1962) [33] {27} <153><260>
QM: I hear this song every now and then at the local IHOP, which usually plays a
lot of obscure 60s songs on their restaurant sound system.

Never never ever erase
The pain in my heart and my eyes
As I go through the lonely years
#12) Jarmels, The: "A Little Bit Of Soap" (1961) [12] {7} <9><130><297>

Drink all the water you can hold
Wash your face, cool your feet
But leave the bottle full for others
#13) Kingston Trio, The: "Desert Pete" (1963) [33] {-} <124><223>

Over and over and over and over again, my friend
#14) McGuire, Barry: "Eve Of Destruction" (1965) [1] {-} <11><86><160><294><344>

But I think I'd better turn you down this time
'Cause you've used all of your charms on me
And I kind of miss the things I left behind
A girl who loves me, is thinking of me
#15) Merry-Go-Round, The: "You're A Very Lovely Woman"
        (1967) [94] {-} <150><284>

#19) Randy & The Rainbows: "Denise" (1963) [10] {18} <16><120>

Why keep your love to yourself? woh-oh, yeah, yeah
It's like a souvenir that just sits on a shelf, woh, oh, oh, oh
It seems like you built a fence around your heart
And are afraid that sharing might tear it apart
#20) Ross, Jackie: "Selfish One" (1964) [11] {n/c} <67><244>

A yardstick for lunatics, one point of view
#21) Strawberry Alarm Clock: "Incense And Peppermints" (1967/68)

There is danger in the summer moon above

Tie-Breakers
------------

Ro-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-l-l-l another one
Just like the other one
That one's just about burned to the end
So come on and be a real friend
#T1) Fraternity Of Man: "Don't Bogart Me " (1969) [133] {-} <->
Several: From the Easy Rider soundtrack.
QM: This song had a short run on alternative FM stations.

Sometime I live in the country babe (yeah)
Sometime I live downtown (yeah)
Sometime I take a great notion (yeah)
To jump in the river and drown
#T2) Little Richard: "Goodnight Irene" (1964) [128] {-} <->
Several: First recorded by Leadbelly.
RRIB: I have alternatively seen the artist as "Leadbelly", "LeadBelly and his
Guitar", and "Huddie Ledbetter", and I have also alternatively seen the title as
"Irene" and "Irene Goodnight" on records and album cuts.
QM: It didn't break the Top 100 when first released, but the song has gathered a
second Youtube audience of those who first heard it in the movie Kiss The Girls.
The song reached #1 in 1950, and there were two lower charting versions in 1959
and 1962, but not with these lyrics.

People Call It The Blues - Part 1", did not make the Hot 100 chart

11) Guitarist Peter GREEN was an original member of Fleetwood Mac

12) Five years after leaving The Moody Blues, DENNY LAINE joined Paul and Linda
McCartney in Wings

13) '68's "Tip-Toe Thru' The Tulips With Me" features Tiny Tim's falsetto voice

19) All of the Rolling Stones' flower stems on the cover of "Flowers" have
leaves except for Brian JONES'

20) ZAL YANOVSKY and John Sebastian formed The Lovin' Spoonful in New York City
in '65

21) Mary and Betty Weiss and twins Mary Ann and Marge Ganser formed The
Shangri-Las in QUEENS in '63

26) "Cousin Brucie" Morrow was a popular '60's DJ on New York City's WABC

Contained within certain letters indicated by the Puzzler's instructions is
"YOU'VE LOST THAT LOVIN' FEELIN'", the song BMI ranked as the most played song
on American radio and television in the 20th century. Released in '64 by The
Righteous Brothers, for whom the song was written, it spent two weeks at #1 on
Billboard's Hot 100 chart. Many others released the song as a single, including
Dionne Warwick (#16 in '69), Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway (#71 in '71), and
Daryl Hall & John Oates (#12 in '80).

Contained within certain other indicated letters of the puzzle is the phrase
"SPECTOR - MANN - WEIL", referring to the song's writers - Phil Spector, Barry
Mann, and Cynthia Weil.

Contained within certain other indicated letters is the name "CILLA BLACK",
whose version rose as high as #2 on the U.K. charts at the end of January,'65.
However, what single jumped to #1 on the U.K. charts the very next week? It was
The Righteous Brothers' version! Black reportedly sent congratulations to The
Righteous Brothers on their single's success.

The overly observant amongst you may have also noticed that by reading the
alphabetically sorted clue answers top to bottom, the pre-filled letters given
as "a bit of help" spell "HATFIELD - MEDLEY" - The Righteous Brothers.

A final note: In 2019 BMI declared that after 15 million radio plays, The
Police's "Every Breath You Take" had overtaken "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'"
as the most played song. BMI's list deals only with airplay, thereby excluding
such ubiquitous songs as "Happy Birthday To You" and "It's A Small World", which
is estimated to have been played 50 million times at Disney World!
