Really Rockin' In Boston was off the pace by a single tie-breaker. Also, great scores by Mike Weaver & Tri-State Trivia. Among the various RIP tributes, two people had 4-song minor themes: #02, 04, 21, 23) James Rado, co-creator of "Hair," who died 6/21/22 at 90. He and Gerome Ragni crafted the story & lyrics, and they then brought in Galt MacDermot to compose the music. I chose four of the songs from the "Hair" soundtrack that had charting cover versions; there were at least two others ("Good Morning Starshine" and "Where Do I Go / Be-In (Hare Krishna)"). #05, 08, 09, 16) Lamont Dozier of the legendary Holland-Dozier-Holland team, who died 8/8/22 at 81. I selected four H-D-H songs; obviously, you could more than fill a quiz with their entire catalog. One of his later collaborations was with Mick Hucknall, the lead singer of Simply Red. They puckishly credited their compositions to "Hucknall-Dozier-Hucknall." The Solution to Bob's Puzzler can be found at the end. Kudos to Delphi Trivia Club and Will McCorry for solving it; the asterisk in the Puzzler column below represents the "gold star" for this extra effort! As always, thanks to everyone who entered. The November 2022 quiz (GOLQ #430) by Mike Weaver will be posted soon. -- Howard Teitelbaum ________________________________________________________________________________ After each score below are two characters representing the two tie-breakers: + indicates a tie-breaker answered correctly. - indicates partial credit. x indicates a totally incorrect guess. . indicates no guess. As with all of her releases, accompanied by her older brother, Charlie. After their top-10 hit "Mockingbird," there was an attempt to promote her as a solo artist, so poor Charlie didn't get artist billing thereafter (although he does get writer credit here). We sat and talked about things on our mind And now this man, he is a friend of mine #07) Friend and Lover: "Reach Out Of The Darkness" (1968) [10] {-} <11><243><366> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2Kdeb2Qf1k (hit single, 1968) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TX_OpIgbXIc ("Reach Out Together", 2009) The duo comprised the then-married couple of Jim & Cathy Post. Jim, who also wrote the song, died 9/14/22 at 82. Although the lyrics are uniformly "... IN the darkness," the label released it as "... OF the darkness." After a long career as a folk singer, Jim pivoted to musical theatre with a series of one-man shows, most notably with him as Mark Twain. In 2009, he recorded a medley with "Get Together" as "Reach Out Together" (2nd link). Darling, there comes a time in everybody's life When they learn as I've learned That being loved is more important Than paintin' the town morning, noon, and night #08) Gaye, Marvin: "Your Unchanging Love" (1967) [33] {7} <96> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBqieZ3fgEk Part of the Lamont Dozier minor theme. He based the lyrics on a family trip to the beach, in which his young daughter Paula was sporting her new 2-piece bathing suit. 2nd link above is Paul describing the song's origin story (thanks to Mike Weaver for finding this). This was among many hits he co-wrote with composer Lee Pockriss. In a sense, this was Vance's second obit; in 2006, a man died who'd falsely claimed that he was the famous lyricist by this name. Premature obits were widely published at that time and then duly retracted. The EJs reported: "Hyland was the victim of a celebrity death hoax this year, but he is still alive." And when she walks that walk I can't help but feel that she's for real And when she talks that talk I can't quite explain just how I feel #12) Impressions, The: "Talking About My Baby" (1964) [12] {n/c} <83><262> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHVzFdbbos0 Sam Gooden, the group's bass and a founding member in 1958, died 8/4/22 at 87. This was his one solo hit, billed under his middle name. Buddy Holly provided guitar on the track. Song was originally recorded & co-written by Johnny O'Keefe (1st link). Though it's plain as can be That you're finished with me I just can't get it through my head #14) Jackson, Chuck: "I Keep Forgettin'" (1962) [55] {-} <91><231> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCCjKPil8O8 (Chuck Jackson, 1962) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Z1z7oipqPc (Michael McDonald, 1982) A Leiber & Stoller composition. This cover version was a bigger hit than the original by Them (composer Van Morrison's group). In Them's original (1st link), the 4th line above is: "And then she come to my room, now she make me feel all right" In response to (or anticipation of) complaints about this suggestive line (at around time 1:50), a censored version was then issued, deleting the offending bit (2nd link). Matrix number on the label is DR33657 for the original, DRE33657 for the censored version ("E" indicating "edited"). I'm partial to the excellent B-side, "I'm Gonna Get You Yet" (3rd link). This actually surfaced previously, appearing as the flip on some pressings of "Iko Iko" earlier in '65. Does your heart beat like mine? Don't you sometimes think that you've had too much wine? If this is so #T2) El Dorados, The: "I'll Be Forever Loving You" (1955/56) [-] {8} <39> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utZuHrhPG1A Released in late 1955; hit the R&B charts in Feb. 1956. They recorded the song for Vee-Jay (originally titled "Forever Loving You") in June '55, but the label never released it, giving it instead to the El Dorados. The 5KoR promptly left Vee-Jay, recorded elsewhere briefly as the Rip-Chords (not the group of "Hey Little Cobra" fame), and soon disbanded. ________________________________________________________________________________ The following table ranks the songs from most recognized to least recognized. POISON IVY: Titular song character who'll make you itch (9) From The Coasters' hit, written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. After the 26 clue lines are arranged and formatted as per this Puzzler's instructions: The letters directly following asterisks spell out "HAIGHT-ASHBURY SAN FRANCISCO", those directly following number signs spell out "SUMMER OF NINETEEN SIXTY-SEVEN", and those directly following percent signs spell out "WEAR SOME FLOWERS IN YOUR HAIR". These phrases, along with the word "LOVE" revealed by the plus signs, all point to this puzzle's theme: THE SUMMER OF LOVE As an unmentioned clue, the last three words of the puzzle's introductory statement "Sorry, there's no online Puzzler SOLVE THEME FORUM!" are an anagram of the theme. As a final note, I offer a flashback to those of us "golden oldies" who were around in '67. Here are some singles that were on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on July 22, 1967: "Windy", "Light My Fire", "San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Flowers In Your Hair)", "A Whiter Shade Of Pale", "White Rabbit", Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", "Pleasant Valley Sunday", The Vanilla Fudge's "You Keep Me Hangin' On", "All You Need Is Love", and "Brown Eyed Girl". Not a bad playlist. Peace and love. __________________________________________________________________________ Howard Teitelbaum <golq429@golq.org>
