From: Mike Weaver <golq430@golq.org> Subject: RESULTS and ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz 430 (GOLQ430) Sender: GOLQ Mailing List <list@golq.org> Date: Mon, 5 Dec 2022 19:27:29 -0500 (EST) RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #430 (GOLQ430) While contemplating thematic possibilities for this quiz I thought about the fact that I was about to embark on my 76th spin around the sun. As I rush headlong into geezerhood [Hey you kids, get off my lawn] I got to thinking about GOLQ eligible artists who (like me) are getting "long in the tooth" but still sharing the planet with us (and in some cases, still performing). Since the last GOLQ eligible song would have entered the charts about 53 years ago, these artists either benefited from excellent genetics or were very young at the time they released their recording. Every entrant identified the "commonality". I didn't think there would be very many artists still around, but I was surprised at the number of aged 80+ artists that I found. Here are are a few examples not on the quiz. Paul Simon, Art Garfunkel (both 81) Dion (83) Jimmy Clanton (84) Harry Belafonte (95) Connie Francis (83) Paul Anka (81) Jackie DeShannon (81) "Little" Anthony Gourdine (82) Tony Bennett (96) Ruby Nash Garnett (Romantics) 88 Patience McIntyre of Patience and Prudence is now about 80 even though she was quite young when they entered the charts. Possibly the youngest GOLQ eligible chart artist was "Little Jo Ann" (Morse) who did "My Daddy is President". She would now be about 67. I wanted to include her in the quiz, but could not confirm that she is still alive. Although not GOLQ eligible (but almost), perhaps the youngest might be the "Third Grade Class" of "Miss Abrams And The Strawberry Point Third Grade Class" performing "Mill Valley" in 1970. Presuming they survive, they would be in their early 60s today. Just to clarify, I emphasized that continued presence in the thematic group could not be guaranteed from mid-October through the life of the quiz. The quiz was already in the pipeline when Jerry Lee Lewis departed the theme-eligible artist club on 10/28/2022. I have put the birth dates (from various sources) in the results section; you can do the math. OK, so on to the quiz results. The 500++ stamp I ordered, did not find use. T2 proved to be a "song too far" and no team identified it. There was a tie for first place with 500+. attained by three teams: Really Rockin', Tri-State Trivia, and the Village Idiots. Will McCorry achieved a great score of 480+., missing only one regular song. I revived my long ago practice of creating a Youtube play list with all the songs on the quiz plus a few "extras". You can listen at: youtube.com/watch?v=xvaQisHV8jw&list=PLOM9kp_8LqiuhQGRiCQtZpZExcKN3BYo7 The usual Youtube caveats apply. Thanks to everyone who entered. GOLQ 431 will post soon. Great Holidays to all. "peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart. (Billboard didn't publish an R&B chart between 11/30/63 and 1/23/65, so recordings in that interval show peak R&B of {n/c} ("no chart").) "xxx",...,"yyy" = prior GOLQ(s) in which the song appeared, if any. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In only a moment we both will be old We won't even notice the world turning cold #01) Ames, Ed: "My Cup Runneth Over" (1967) [8] {-} <14><166><260> Ed was born 7/29/27 Um diddle diddle diddle, um diddle ay! Um diddle diddle diddle, um diddle ay! Um diddle diddle diddle, um diddle ay! Um diddle diddle diddle, um diddle ay! #02) Andrews, Julie - Dick Van Dyke and The Pearlies: "Super-cali-fragil-istic-expi-ali-docious" (1965) [66] {-} <118><298> Dick Van Dyke was born 12/13/25 Julie Andrews was born 10/1/35 As far as I know, Mr. Van Dyke is the "seniorest" senior of this group. He will be 97 this month (Dec.) presuming his GOLQ presence doesn't hex him. With his faith and love He believed somewhere, someone up above Would grant his little prayer The miracle occurred before his ending day #03) Avalon, Frankie: "The Puppet Song" (1960/61) [56] {-} <222> Frankie was born 9/18/39 (Tell me) and when you're scared now (He'll be there) he'll be right there now He'll make you smile when You feel like crying #04) Boone, Pat: "Beach Girl" (1964) [72] {n/c} <154> Pat was born 6/1/34 Really Rockin: The best Beach Boys song they never sang. Co-written by soon-to-be Beach Boy Bruce Johnson it was released a month after "Don't Worry Baby" left the charts... Probably an attempt by Pat to stay relevant by releasing a "Beach Boys" style tune. It was written by Terry Melcher and Bruce Johnson so the "Beach Boys" influence is definitely by design. The flip side is "Little Honda" written by Brian Wilson. I am really surprised that this song did not do better in the recognition scoring; it did get a bit of airplay locally (Cleveland OH). Paint my face with a good-for-nothin' smile 'Cause a mean, fickle woman Turned my whole world upside-down #05) Darren, James: "Goodbye Cruel World" (1961/62) [3] {-} <34><89><214> James was born10/3/1936 Although it has been reported here previously, it is interesting enough to revisit: The calliope sound at the beginning of the record is actually the voice of song's author Gloria Shayne. Several entrants mentioned the "off to join the Army" version from the Donna Reed show. I have included the video on the GOLQ 430 Youtube playlist. Here is a cut and paste of info provided by 'Verycoolsound' on the post: "Aired Sept. 14, 1961, in 'One Starry Night,' the first episode of the fourth season of the Donna Reed Show. One month later 'Goodbye Cruel World' (the hit version) made its chart debut. In mid-December, the tune peaked at No. 2 on Cash Box and No. 3 on Billboard. In the Jeep alongside James is his brother, Johnny Darren." Incidentally, in this version I believe the calliope sound is actually an instrument. Well I'm walkin' round and grinnin' With my head in the air The people think I'm crazy But I just don't care #06) Dee, Joey, & The Starliters: "What Kind Of Love Is This" (1962) [18] {-} <170><308> Joey was born 11/6/37 You never seem to notice I'm along Although I hope and pray That you will need me some day #07) Fabian: "String Along" (1960) [39] {-} Fabian was born 2/6/43 This version is a bit "inside-out" compared to the Rick Nelson version. I included both versions on the GOLQ 430 playlist so you can 'compare and contrast'. (I can still hear my eighth grade English teacher using that phrase.) Don't send him off With your hair still in curlers You may not see him again #08) Jones, Jack: "Wives And Lovers" (1963/64) [14] {n/c} <270><316> Jack was born 1/14/38 Lyrics are probably a tad out of place in today's world. Reminds me of the opening scenes of "Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" where Miriam gets out of bed an hour early to fix her make up and hair and then gets back into bed so her husband will not see her in a "just woke up" condition. It happens every day, no matter what you say You find it happens all the time Love will never do, what you want it to Why can't this crazy love be mine? #09) Jones, Tom: "It's Not Unusual" (1965) [10] {26} <41><233> Tom was born 6/7/1940 In his early live performances it was reported that Tom was the target of ladies underthings and hotel room keys thrown onto the stage. Now that his fans are older... Well, the mind boggles. I don't need sunny skies for things I have to do 'Cause I stay home the whole day long and think of you As far as I'm concerned each day's a rainy day #10) King, Carole: "It Might As Well Rain Until September" (1962) [22] {-} <25><88><271><356><401> Carole was born 2/9/42 Anyone who sees her, soon forgets the Mona Lisa It would take, I know, a Michelangelo And he would need the glow of dawn that paints the sky above #11) Lawrence, Steve: "Portrait Of My Love" (1961) [9] {-} <15> Steve was born 7/8/35 Baby's begged me not to go So many times before She says love and happiness Can't live behind those swinging doors Now she's gone and I'm to blame Too late, I finally see #12) Lewis, Jerry Lee: "What's Made Milwaukee Famous (Has Made A Loser Out Of Me)" (1968) [94] {-} <126> Jerry "The Killer" Lee Lewis was born 9/29/35 As explained in the opening remarks, "The Last Man Standing" departed the planet on 10/28/22. The next thing I would do Is plan a celebration in the land Oh what a happy day When people hear you say #13) March, Little Peggy: "I Wish I Were A Princess" (1963) [32] {-} <39><204> Peggy March was born 3/7/48 Ms. March is the youngster on this quiz at 74. You went away Just the other day You didn't telephone Left me all alone #14) Mason, Barbara: "Sad, Sad Girl" [27] {12} Barbara was born 8/9/47 Sometimes we stand on the top of a hill And we gaze at the earth and the sky I turn to you and you melt in my arms There we are, darling, only you and I #15) Mathis, Johnny: "Wonderful! Wonderful!" (1957) [14] {-} <65> Johnny was born 9/30/35 Button down shirt and a crew neck sweater Lets all the kids look so much better #16) Pedrick, Bobby, Jr.: "White Bucks And Saddle Shoes" (1958) [74] {-} <259> Bobby (AKA Robert John) was born 1/3/46 You don't want to lose him So you let him have his way You don't dare refuse him Because you know the price you'll pay #17) Puckett, Gary, and The Union Gap: "Don't Give In To Him" (1969) [15] {-} <142> Gary was born 10/17/42 There's never any place We ever wanna go We'd rather snuggle up And watch the late, late show #18) Renay, Diane: "Kiss Me Sailor" (1964) [29] {n/c} <93><187><260> Diane was born 7/13/45 You lose somebody you love But that's no reason for you to break down and cry #19) Roe, Tommy: "Everybody" (1963/64) [3] {n/c} <85><236> Tommy was born 5/9/42 I know that you could love me too But show me first, show me what to do This is the first love, that I have ever known What must I do to make you my very own #20) Stevens, April: "Teach Me Tiger" (1959) [86] {-} <239> April was born 4/29/1936 (Maybe) There is a bit of uncertainty here. The above cited date is from Joel Whitburn's Top Pop Singles (13th edition). However, several internet sources list her birth date as 4/29/1929, making her 93 and thus the grand dame of this quiz. Interestingly, her brother Nino Tempo's birth date is given as 1/6/1935 in multiple places. I have no idea which date is correct for April, but I always thought that she was younger. Also, I was not aware until I started creating this quiz result that Nino is still ALIVE. He is nearly 88. Had I been aware of that I would have used a song that paired them both. And my memory strays To those wonderful days When you kissed me And called me sweetheart #21) Stevens, Dodie: "Yes I'm Lonesome Tonight" (1961/62) [60] {-} Dodie was born 2/17/46 The answer song to Elvis Presley's "Are You Lonesome Tonight". A slightly more popular version was released by Thelma Carpenter but the lyrics are somewhat different. Ms. Carpenter passed away in 1997. I love every movement There's nothing I would change She doesn't need improvement She's much too nice to rearrange #22) Tillotson, Johnny: "Poetry In Motion" (1960/61) [2] {27} <2><127><259> Johnny was born 4/20/39 At long last love has arrived And I thank God I'm alive #23) Valli, Frankie: "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" (1967) [2] {-} <45><296> Frankie was born 5/3/1937 I know there's something much more, Something even non-believers can believe in. I believe in love #24) Warwick, Dionne: "Alfie" (1967) [15] {5} <58> Dionne was born 12/12/1940 Each night I count the stars in the sky Hoping that you aren't telling me lies You're with me tonight, I'm captured by your charms Oh, pretty baby, won't you hold me in your arms #25) Young, Kathy, with The Innocents: "A Thousand Stars" (1960/61) [3] {6} <17><95><248> Kathy was born 10/21/1945 ------------ Tie-Breakers ------------ Love is so surprising Opened up my eyes and You reached out and You took my haaaand Baby, you touched my soul now Woman, don`t let go now Hold on, baby #T1) Alive And Kicking: "Tighter, Tighter" (1970) [7] {-} This song was included to reinforce the theme, but also because it tangentially qualifies by the presence of Tommy James (4/29/1947) as writer/producer. However... Per Really Rockin::Written by Tommy James, released in June 1970, this could easily have been a Shondells recording. Tommy had collapsed on stage in March 1970 and was even pronounced dead. But in keeping with this quiz theme, he was revived and eventually recovered, although the Shondells split from Tommy and became Hog Heaven. Paradise can't be better than this And you did it all with one little kiss Baby it's true #T2) Neil Sedaka: The Closest Thing To Heaven" (1964) (107) {n/c} Neil was born 3/13/1939 I thought this one would not be a stumper, but it was! It got limited air play but it is a nice bright, bouncy tune that should have done better on the charts. The 45 version of the song is about 30 seconds shorter than the LP version. I put both on the GOLQ 430 play list. ============================================================================ The following table ranks the songs from most recognized to least recognized. The first column indicates the average number of points scored on that song (total points divided by number of entrants). For comparison purposes, tie-breakers are scored here on the usual 20-point scale. Avg.
