Vito & The Salutations, The EJ's and Co., and Will McCorry were close behind. The tie-breakers were obscure songs that later became big hits after being re- written with different lyrics. The average score was 416. Teams that submitted Puzzler answers are Ron & Sally Crandall, Team Teitelbaum and Will McCorry. The complete Puzzler solution is below. And thanks to Bob Bluestein for continuing to provide these puzzlers. Thanks to everyone who entered. GOLQ #434 has been posted. - Rich Ardini ______________________________________________________________________ After each score below are two characters representing the two tie-breakers: + indicates a tie-breaker answered correctly. - indicates partial credit. x indicates a totally incorrect guess. . indicates no guess. "peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart. (Billboard didn't publish an R&B chart between 11/30/63 and 1/23/65, so recordings in that interval show peak R&B of {n/c} ("no chart").) "xxx",...,"yyy" = prior GOLQ(s) in which the song appeared, if any. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- And the way she looked was way beyond compare #01) Beatles, The: "I Saw Her Standing There" (1964) [14] {n/c} <85><206><302> It's taller than the tallest tree (how soft?) Softer than a summer breeze All I ask you, please Give (uh huh) your love (uh huh) Your love (uh huh), sweet love (uh huh) to me #02) Brooks, Donnie: "Mission Bell" (1960) [7] {-} <19><133><266> ‘Cause I took a plane, plane, plane But there was some rain, rain, rain And there was no flyin', flyin', flyin' So I took a train, train, train #03) Checker, Chubby: "Hey, Bobba Needle" (1964) [23] {n/c} <284> I'm going down to the bus station with a Suitcase in my hand, yes I am I'm gonna grab me a armful of Greyhound And ride just as far as I can #04) Cooke, Sam: "Somebody Have Mercy" (1962) [70] {3} <183> QM: Not a big chart hit, but it was a longer, show-stopper number in his live shows. Really somethin' When the joint is jumpin' When they do #05) Dovells, The: "Bristol Stomp" (1961) [2] {7} <30><155><267><346> Then came the dawn And you were gone You were gone, gone, gone #06) Electric Prunes, The: "I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night)" (1966/67) [11] {-} <15><102><210> DT: Kenny Loggins was in this group (he toured with them for awhile a year after these hits). Though we're apart a little while My heart will wait until we both can smile That wall, built of our sorrow We know must have an end ‘Til then dream of tomorrow When we meet again #07) Fisher, Toni: "West Of The Wall" (1962) [37] {-} <164> QM: Toni's ode to the Berlin Wall. This received decent airplay in the Boston area, maybe not so much elsewhere. When love walked out A fire went out inside of me They put it out Those tears inside of me #08) Fortunes, The: "Here It Comes Again" (1965) [27] {-} <76><244> QM: Like some other British Invasion groups, including #25, the Fortunes faded from the Top 30 after a couple of songs. They would occasionally achieve lower chart success in the ensuing years and even briefly returned to the spotlight with Here Comes That Rainy Day Feeling Again in 1971. There, whenever you need to know That there is someone who cares So if your new love Isn't the true love Don't you worry darlin' #09) Gerry and The Pacemakers: "I'll Be There" (1964/65) [14] {-} <12><136><301> Call out your name Wake up the town, you'll see I'm gonna hoo-hoot and howl like the lovesick owl Until you say you're gonna come out with me #10) Hodges, Eddie: "I'm Gonna Knock On Your Door" (1961) [12] {-} <56><190> Children, behave #11) James, Tommy, and The Shondells: "I Think We're Alone Now" (1967) [4] {-} <13><111> Girl, the name of the game is love On your mark, get set, let the kissin' start #12) Jay and The Techniques: "Keep The Ball Rollin'" (1967/68) [14] {-} <7><90><277><341> QM: I remember watching an historic Houston-UCLA basketball game in January 1968, when Houston, at home, ended a long UCLA winning streak. At halftime, Jay & The Techniques were wheeled around the court on a flatbed while playing this song. I memori-i-ize Every line #13) Lester, Ketty: "Love Letters" (1962) [5] {2} <8><92><305><337> QM: A shout-out to Lincoln Mayorga, who provided the memorable piano arrangement. Lincoln was first heard as one of the two pianists in the intro to Four Preps: Big Man. And through his long relationship with the group's Ed Cobb, he co-produced this single as well as arranged the Standells: Dirty Water, written by Cobb. And if a job is hard to find And we have to stand in the welfare line I've got your love and you know you got mine #14) Little Milton: "We're Gonna Make It" (1965) [25] {1} <160> QM: His biggest Pop Single chart success, he was more successful on the R&B charts. He was one of the many artists to sing for Coca-Cola in that series of commercials that often sounded like short pop songs. He sang of his new car that was so expensive, it had seat belts. Times have changed since then. All across the nation, such a strange vibration #15) McKenzie, Scott: "San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Flowers In Your Hair)" (1967) [4] {-} <13><286><332> I get high, just a-thinkin' about ya You know what they say about the bird in the hand And that's why I ain't leaving without you #16) Mojo Men, The: "Sit Down, I Think I Love You" (1967) [36] {-} <89><258> QM: Written by Stephen Stills, first recorded by Buffalo Springfield. All my bags are packed #17) Peter, Paul & Mary: "Leaving On A Jet Plane" (1969/70) [1] {-} <82><162><265><348> It's so hard to face reality Knowing loneliness is my destiny #18) Ruffin, Jimmy: "I've Passed This Way Before" (1966/67) [17] {10} <77><197> QM: I only remember three lines of this song, the first one and these two, which are prominent near the end. I was surprised how little the song was recognized. One night I was late, came home from a date Slipped out of my shoes at the door Then from the front room, I heard a jump tune I looked in and here's what I saw #19) Starr, Kay: "Rock And Roll Waltz" (1955/56) [1] {-} <31><228> Up in the morning at half past eight You can't have your breakfast 'cause you'll be late You tie your tie like a hangman's noose Ain't no time to drink your juice #20) Third Rail: "Run, Run, Run" (1967) [53] {-} <77> In the jungle, the mighty jungle #21) Tokens, The: "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" (1961/62) [1] {7} <18><167><240><296> But when the Cuban queen comes upon the scene They all stare like a statue out of stone And when they realize what's before their eyes The other girls are left all alone #22) Torok, Mitchell: "Caribbean" (1959) [27] {26} <114><198> QM: One of the earliest pop songs I first heard on a TV show, likely American Bandstand. Well now she's the woman that's a-got that beat Ah, she's the woman with the flying feet Ah, she's the woman walks around the store She's the woman giving more, more, more, more #23) Vincent, Gene, and His Blue Caps: "Be-Bop-A-Lula" (1956) [7] {8} <40><99><208><316> You'd laugh and say 'nothing's that simple' But you've been told many times before Messiahs pointed to the door No one has the guts to leave the temple #24) Who, The: "I'm Free" (1969) [37] {-} <63> QM: From the rock opera Tommy. Please don't bother tryin' to find her #25) Zombies, The: "She's Not There" (1964/65) [2] {n/c} <19><108><200><283><367> ------------ Tie-Breakers ------------ I hear that dreams come true there every day I hear that life don't get you down The way it gets you in this small town I swear I'm gonna get me there some way #T1) Cookies: "On Broadway" (1963) [-] {-} <-> NV: T1 and T2 were both recorded by the Drifters, T1 as a chart hit, #T2 as the flip side to "Save The Last Dance For Me" QM: The Drifters let it be known they had a recording session the next day and needed one more song to record. This Mann/Weil song, first recorded by the Crystals and Cookies, was submitted. Lieber/Stoller wrote new lyrics to better fit the group's style. Those lyrics, plus an excellent Garry Sherman arrangement with Phil Spector providing the guitar solo, has made this an enduring radio song. Sherman would later play the keyboards on Van Morrison: Brown Eyed Girl. It is unclear if either of the girl-group versions was released as a single. Nobody can do the (Twist) like I do Nobody can do the (Shout) like I do Nobody can mash (the Mashed Potato) like I do Nobody can do the (Popeye) like I do Ah don't you know I gotta Twist I do #T2) Isley Brothers: "Nobody But Me" (1962) [-] {-} <-> QM: Two versions of this song were released as Wand 131. In the version above, these lyrics are right at the beginning. The other version is longer with party sounds and the lyrics are in a different order. This confusion led to some teams identifying the above as the Mojos version. But all teams identified it, presumably due to the later Human Beinz version. ======================================================================= The following table ranks the songs from most recognized to least recognized. I'm A Comin'" fame were SAM MOORE and Dave Prater H) Soul singer Bettye SWANN had a few charting singles in the late '60's and early '70's I) Motown's first #1 hit was MARY WELLS' "My Guy", written by Smokey Robinson J) Crosby, Stills & Nash had a hit with "SUITE: Judy Blue Eyes", written by Stills about his then-girlfriend Judy Collins K) Neil Sedaka released "SWEET Little You", Brenda Lee released "Sweet Impossible You", and Ray Charles released "Sweet Young Thing Like You" L) Fats Domino released the single "LITTLE Mary", The Everly Brothers released "Wake Up Little Susie", and Ritchie Valens released "That's My Little Suzie" M) Frankie Avalon took "A BOY WITHOUT A GIRL" to #10 in '59 N) Cream's "WHITE ROOM", a #6 hit in '68, also contains the lyrics "I'll wait in this place where the sun never shines" O) The studio group STEAM recorded "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye", and it's been a staple of sports contests and rallies ever since P) Gary (U.S.) Bonds released "Dear Lady TWIST", The Champs released "Tequila Twist", and Rod McKuen released "Oliver Twist" Q) The Simon SISTERS, Lennon Sisters, Paris Sisters, and Bonnie Sisters all had singles on the Billboard pop charts R) Thompson's single "James (Hold The Ladder STEADY)" was one of her five top 40 hits S) Boone, The Fontanes, Storm, and many others recorded on DOT Records T) ROY ORBISON's "Blue Bayou" was the B-side of "Mean Woman Blues" U) NAPPY Brown, born Napoleon Brown Culp, sometimes toured with Alan Freed's revues V) Big Bopper's "CHANTILLY LACE" was covered ten years later by Mitch Ryder as "(You've Got) Personality & Chantilly Lace" W) The Mystics' "HUSHABYE" was covered ten years later by Jay & The Americans X) Eric Burdon & The Animals' "San Franciscan Nights" suggests that you "save up all your BREAD and fly TransLove Airways to San Francisco, U.S.A." Y) "You Never Give Me Your Money" contains the line "You only give me your FUNNY paper" Z) "DRAG CITY" was Jan & Dean's follow-up to "Surf City" and "Honolulu Lulu" There is a line from a Beatles song spelled out by the letters in certain clue answer columns as indicated; similar to the line "Money can't buy me love", here we have from "She's Leaving Home": "Fun is the one thing that money can't buy" However, the grid solution is: When someone once claimed that The Beatles were anti-materialistic, Paul's response was "That's a huge myth ... John and I literally used to sit down and say, 'Now, let's write a swimming pool.'" So perhaps in singing "Money (That's What I Want)", The Beatles were more "on the money" with the line: "Your lovin' give me a thrill / But your lovin' don't pay my bills" Hope you had "the one thing that money can't buy"! ____________________________________________________________________________
