RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #434 (GOLQ434)

Congratulations to the EJ'S and Village Idiots, who tied for first with
perfect scores! Tri State Trivia, Really Rockin' In Boston, and Delphi
Trivia Club were just off the pace.

The Solution to Bob's Puzzler can be found at the end. A tip of the cap to
the EJ'S and Will McCorry, who solved it - they received the coveted asterisk
in the "Pz" column below.

As always, thanks to everyone who entered.

The April 2023 quiz (GOLQ #435) by Mike Weaver will be posted soon.

GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #434 ANSWERS:
Answers are in the form:

#number) Artist: "Title" (chart year) [peak Pop] {peak R&B} <xxx>...<yyy>

where:
"peak Pop" = Peak position achieved on the weekly Billboard Pop chart.
"peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart.
(Billboard didn't publish an R&B chart between 11/30/63 and 1/23/65,
so recordings in that interval show peak R&B of {n/c} ("no chart").)
"xxx",...,"yyy" = prior GOLQ(s) in which the song appeared, if any.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

But my good times are all gone
And I'm bound for movin' on
I'll look for you if I'm ever back this way
#01) Bare, Bobby: "Four Strong Winds" (1964) [60] {n/c} <212><355>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnqqiEeSa5k (Ian & Sylvia, 1963)
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PuoWYGrBEDY (Bobby Bare)

Written by Ian Tyson, who died 12/29/22 at 89. The original by Ian & Sylvia
was released in 1963; I&S sang the first line as "But OUR good times ...".

Now his memory (whoa-whoa-whoa, he should've never)
Is down in history (whoa-whoa-whoa, he should've never)
#02) Bobbettes, The: "I Shot Mr Lee" (1960) [52] {-} <86>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5qgWP6PflI (1958 Atlantic version)
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6qStEbd8bY (1960 Triple-X hit version)

Their big hit, "Mr. Lee," was released on Atlantic in 1957. This sequel was
first cut for that label in '58, but it was shelved. The re-recording for
Triple-X in 1960 was a minor hit, hindered by Atlantic belatedly issuing the
earlier version - along with suing Triple-X for copyright infringement.

Classify you, simplify you
Deny, defy, or crucify you
#03) Byrds, The: "All I Really Want To Do" (1965) [40] {-} <83><190>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WYDfjV2B5Gk (Bob Dylan, 1964)
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbxAOKYl7kY (Byrds)
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HsOj2RjNFtQ (Cher)

Group member David Crosby, later of CSN/CSNY fame, died 1/18/23 at 81.

Bob Dylan's original appeared on his 1964 "Another Side Of" LP. In 1965,
the Byrds & Cher covers competed; Cher's (actually S&C, as Sonny's answering
vocals are prominent) ultimately prevailed on the charts, hitting #15.
All 3 sang this part differently:
Dylan: Simplify you, classify you / Deny, defy, or crucify you
Byrds: Classify you, simplify you / Deny, defy, or crucify you
Cher: Simplify you, classify you / Deny, defy, or mystify you

Let's get together tonight
I got some money in my jeans
And I'm really gonna spend it right
#04) Cochran, Eddie: "C'mon Everybody" (1958/59) [35] {-} <13><154><370>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0EM2B_ocL0 ("C'mon Everybody")
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uOqHc2qGa8 ("Let's Get Together")

He recorded an alternate version, entitled "Let's Get Together" - the only
significant lyrical change is that phrase replacing "C'mon Everybody" at
the end of each verse. The earliest release of "Let's Get Together" I found
was in 1968, as the B-side of a "Summertime Blues" reissue.

You know I'd be there, working at my craft
Had it not been for the draft
Dry up your tear, and feel no fear
You're here with me, like I'm there with you
#05) Donovan: "To Susan On The West Coast Waiting" (1969) [35] {-} <127>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdwN3-3ji_k

Flip of the #7 hit "Atlantis."

I can't stay mad at her for long
Why should I want to fight
When I can hold her tight
I just don't care who's right or wrong
#06) Drifters, The: "When My Little Girl Is Smiling" (1962) [28] {-} <140><228>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVcXm7isBTo

Group member Charlie Thomas died 1/31/23 at 85. He sang lead on several of
their hits, most notably this one and "Sweets for My Sweet."

No other love could thrill me so completely
No other lips could satisfy me
#07) Everly Brothers, The: "Love Of My Life" (1958) [40] {-} <192>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SduY-qJZR1I

B-side of the #2 hit "Problems"; both were written by the Bryants.

And everybody says I'm quite insane
And someday I'll be going down the drain
I know they're right (but I don't care)
I feel no pain
#08) 5th Dimension, The: "Paper Cup" (1967) [34] {-} <212><277>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oR_HwLOkp_s

You're treatin' me mean
You're makin' me cry
I made up my mind
To tell you goodbye
#09) Gracie, Charlie: "Butterfly" (1957) [1] {10} <30><109><301>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bjj55YgjGeQ

Died 12/16/22 at 86. Song was actually written by Cameo label owners
Bernie Lowe & Kal Mann, credited to the pseudonym "Anthony September."

Where is that something?
Where is that someone?
That tells me why I live and die
#10) Happenings, The: "Where Do I Go / Be-In (Hare Krishna)" (1969) [66] {-} <->
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhH-qYxVVpU

    From the musical "Hair."

They gonna throw a cross charge agin' ya
That'll be the very thing that'll send ya
#11) Hawkins, Ronnie: "Forty Days" (1959) [45] {-} <95><361>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RxMCVQmfNo (Chuck Berry, "Thirty Days", 1955)
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXbUaxs6fMs (Ronnie Hawkins)

Died 5/29/22 at 87. Song is a slight revision of Chuck Berry's
"Thirty Days (To Come Back Home)," which was a #2 R&B hit in '55.
Several label variations add "and The Hawks" or give writing credit
to Hawkins & Jacqueline Magill instead of Berry.

Now listen to me, baby
I'm not destined for the Hall of Fame
And bright lights don't shine on my name
#12) Holidays, The: "I'll Love You Forever" (1966) [63] {7} <->
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KuqItxHK_M

Trio included Edwin Starr, who sang lead on this one. Another member was
    J. J. Barnes (who later found greater prominence as a songwriter), who died
    12/10/22 at 79.

Tears are runnin', they're all runnin' down your breast
And your friends, baby
They treat you like a guest
#13) Jefferson Airplane: "Somebody To Love" (1967) [5] {-} <66><217><295>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QiSE0rOQn6c (Great Society/"Someone to Love")
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZ2oiNroFbY (Jefferson Airplane)

Written by guitarist Darby Slick of The Great Society, who released it in
early '66 as "Someone To Love". Darby's original working title was
"Mind Full of Bread." The group notably featured vocalist Grace Slick,
then married to Darby's brother Jerry (the group's drummer).

In late '66, Signe Toly Anderson departed Jefferson Airplane; Grace replaced
her, bringing this song and her own "White Rabbit" with her. The Great
Society (the group, not LBJ's legislative agenda) dissolved shortly
thereafter, as did Grace & Jerry's marriage.

I laughed at love 'cause I thought it was funny
You came along and moved me honey
#14) Lewis, Jerry Lee, and His Pumping Piano: "Great Balls Of Fire"
      (1957/58) [2] {3} <62><158><319>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEXZa8DF1xU

"The Killer" died on 10/28/22 at 87.

The school board says he can't come to school no more
Unless he wears his hair like he wore it before
The PTA and all of the mothers
Say he oughta look like the others
#15) Miller, Jody: "Home Of The Brave" (1965) [25] {-} <104><228>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiGoi7hM884 (Jody Miller)
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3ASw3RNjW8 (Bonnie and The Treasures)

Died 10/6/22 at 80. This Mann-Weil composition had two charting versions,
the other being by Bonnie and The Treasures (2nd link).

Noble kings and princes
Would bow whene'er they came
Pirate ships would lower their flags
#16) Peter, Paul & Mary: "Puff (The Magic Dragon)"
      (1963) [2] {10} <33><235><309>
http://holyjoe.org/poetry/nashA.htm ("The Tale of Custard the Dragon")
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PXWgvDDKxM

Lenny Lipton, who wrote the poem that formed this song's lyrics, died
10/5/22 at 82. In 1959, after reading the 1936 Ogden Nash poem
"The Tale of Custard the Dragon" (1st link), Lipton came up with the idea
for Puff and put the words to paper using the typewriter of Peter Yarrow,
a fellow student at Cornell. Peter found the poem still sitting in his
typewriter and wrote accompanying music for it.

Lipton always insisted that it was not in any sense a drug reference,
despite perennial rumors to the contrary.

But your kiss is sweeter than the cake
That Grandma used to bake
#17) Reeves, Martha, & The Vandellas: "Honey Chile" (1967) [11] {5} <51>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlawbAsIVY0

Their first release after changing the group's billing to include
    Martha's surname.

Baby, don't believe I wear two left shoes
#18) Smith, Huey (Piano), and The Clowns: "Don't You Just Know It"
      (1958) [9] {4} <34><191>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M2I08bmKdBE

Huey died 2/13/23 at 89. Gerri Hall is the vocalist who provides the
answering line in each verse, such as this one.

I never had a mother
I hardly knew my Dad
I've been in town for eighteen years
You're the only boy I've had
#19) Sonny & Cher: "Baby Don't Go" (1965) [8] {-} <45><167>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBcErEy1ygw

Mike Weaver informed me that Cher's Mom, Georgia Holt, died 12/10/22 at 96.
I'll count her as an "honorary member" of the recently-deceased theme.

I got the same old friends
I got the same old sins
I tell the same old jokes
Get the same old grins
#20) Springfield, Dusty: "A Brand New Me" (1969/70) [24] {-} <165>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BT-G4aQgqHM (Jerry Butler)
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=396-qUNRKK0 (Dusty Springfield)

Co-written by Thom Bell. As a producer & songwriter, he was one of the
keystones of the Philadelphia soul sound of the '70s. He died 12/22/22
    at 79.

Another co-writer, Jerry Butler, recorded it initially (1st link), but
his version only bubbled under at #109. He sings the second line above
as "They got the same old sins."

It was hard times
Needed something to ease my troubled mind
#21) Temptations, The: "Cloud Nine" (1968/69) [6] {2} <95><318>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSqE7dnTaTw

Co-written by Barrett Strong, who died 1/28/23 at 81. After an early
recording career, including the hit "Money (That's What I Want)," he
pivoted to songwriting by the mid-'60s, teaming with Norman Whitfield
for many hits such as this one.

Tells you she is forbidden
Can you leave her there?
Can you leave her there?
Can you leave her there?
Can you leave her there?
#22) Valino, Joe: "Garden Of Eden" (1956) [12] {-} <68>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UgzUqfFeKYE

Loving you the way I do
I'd take you back
Without you I'd die, dear
#23) Warwick, Dionne: "Anyone Who Had A Heart"
      (1963/64) [8] {n/c} <74><247><313>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vur_IjsGwM

One of the many great Burt Bacharach / Hal David tunes.
    Burt died 2/8/23 at 94.

'Cause it's all for free
I'm not searching for a reason to enjoy myself
Seems it's better done than argued with somebody else

Must be you that caused this feelin' in me
You that fills me confidently
You that brings the best out in me
#25) Young Rascals, The: "A Girl Like You" (1967) [10] {-} <44><238><322><396>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gks18aSHN20

Dino Danelli, the group's drummer, died 12/15/22 at 78.

Tie-Breakers

Oh yeah, and now I'm sorry, baby
I didn't mean to make you cry
C'mon, and now forgive me, honey
I'll never tell another lie
#T1) Lulu: "I'll Come Running" (1964/65) [105] {n/c} <->
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdBqI1j5GBI (Lulu)
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2fUHGN1XeM (Lyn Randell)
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NC6T8PjD2uI (The New Breed)
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7jsgCJSIZA (2 of Clubs)

Covered in '65 by Australian vocalist Lyn (a.k.a. Lynne) Randell.
Entrants also mentioned versions by The New Breed and by 2 of Clubs.
Several of the versions gave the title as "I'll Come Running Over."
I accepted any of these artists, although none but Lulu sang the lyrics
    exactly as given above.

Pretty soon, now
I'll go to sea
Then my pretty baby
Will have seen the last of me
#T2) Students, The: "I'm So Young" (1958) [-] {26} <63>
  https://www.crashingtheparty.co/ctp-heroes-prez-tyus (Prez Tyus interview)
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjWwEprP2A8 (The Students)
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NLI8N0z4mg (Veronica, 1964)
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TRwIv9ZXMI (Beach Boys, 1965)

I ran across an audio interview with William "Prez" Tyus (1st link), who
wrote this song and its flip, "Every Day of the Week." According to Prez,
most listeners (including yours truly) have mis-heard the 2nd line above as
"I'll go to sleep." The Students featured the plaintive pre-pubescent
(then 13) lead tenor of Leroy King. Prez died on 12/23/22.

I know of two mid-'60s versions (3rd & 4th links). Veronica (better known
as Ronnie Spector) titled hers "So Young."

The grid solution:

My daughter McKenna thought I sang with the Everly Brothers ... I said,
"No, I was one of the Righteous Brothers", and she said, "Didn't they
invent the airplane?" - Bill Medley

By the way, McKenna Medley is now a successful singer in her own right.

The first letters of the clue answers spell out the story's lesson:

                       SIC TRANSIT GLORIA MUNDI

"All glory eventually ends." And so now does this Puzzler.
