From: Regina Litman <golq441@golq.org> Subject: RESULTS and ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz 441 (GOLQ441) Sender: GOLQ Mailing List <list@golq.org> Date: Wed, 22 Nov 2023 15:03:25 -0500 (EST) RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #441 (GOLQ441) Congratulations to Randy Price, Delphi Trivia Club, Ron & Sally Crandall, Really Rockin' In Boston, The EJ'S & Co., Mike Weaver, The Village Idiots, Will McCorry, and Vito & the Salutations who tied for first place with perfect scores of 500++. Three other teams identified songs #01-#25 correctly but did not identify either tie-breaker. Curiously, every entry either correctly identified both tie-breakers or didn't correctly identify either. Eleven entries identified the theme. The theme was songs with music composed by Burt Bacharach, who died earlier this year at the age of 94. For some time, I had wanted to do a GOLQ made up entirely of songs written or co-written by one person or one songwriting team. I finally realized that Bacharach could be the one. Still, I just barely had enough after discovering that so many of his great songs (at least 11) were used too recently in other GOLQs. As far as I know, the Beatles, Elvis Presley, and the Beach Boys have only released one Burt Bacharach song each, and all three of these songs are in this quiz by other artists. Of course, a sub-theme of this quiz could be songs that were also recorded, and in most cases charted, by Dionne Warwick. Bacharach only wrote music, so his songs, unless purely instrumental, always had one or more lyricists as co-writers. Of course, the most common one in the GOLQ era was Hal David. Other co-writers of the songs in this quiz include Hal's brother Mack David, Luther Dixon writing under the name of Barney Williams, Bob Hilliard, and Paul Hampton. When the lyricist was other than Hal David, I have noted it with the song. I have created a section called Useful Links after the "Tie-Breakers" section. GOLQ441's mean score was 493.67, and the median was 500. My thanks to everyone who participated. Although it appears here as an instrumental, Hal David did write lyrics to go with the song. The lyric version, called "Have No Fear Bond Is Here" and sung by Mike Redway, is played during the closing credits. Here is a link to it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Io-jchlnvJM Another hit song written by Bacharach and David from this film is "The Look of Love," which was used too recently (in one of my GOLQs!) for inclusion here. Burt Bacharach wrote a good deal of film music, some of which I first discovered in my research for this quiz. http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ441/GOLQ441-02.mp3 #02) Bacharach, Burt: "I'll Never Fall In Love Again" (1969) [93] {-} Other charting version: 1970 - Dionne Warwick, #6, #17 r&b Bacharach was also a recording artist himself. He had two Hot 100 entries, both of which peaked at #93. The other was "Saturday Sunshine" in 1963. I chose this one because it was from the only Broadway musical with songs by him and Hal David, PROMISES, PROMISES. (There have been two Broadway revues based on the songs of him and Hal David in more recent years, but this is the only one which has a story line.) This and other recordings under his name feature various session singers and studio musicians. http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ441/GOLQ441-03.mp3 #03) Benton, Brook: "A House Is Not A Home" (1964) [75] {n/c} Other charting version: 1964 - Dionne Warwick, #71 Many years later, this song title inspired the name of Burt Bacharach's website, "A House Is Not A Homepage" (see the link in the Useful Links section). http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ441/GOLQ441-04.mp3 #04) Como, Perry: "Magic Moments" (1958) [4] {-} <87><376> Randy Price and The EJ'S & Co. noted that this is with Mitchell Ayres Orchestra and The Ray Charles Singers. http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ441/GOLQ441-05.mp3 #05) DeShannon, Jackie: "What The World Needs Now Is Love" (1965) [7] {40} <21><306><343> Other notable versions: 1966 - Dionne Warwick, classic non-Hot 100 song 1968 - Sweet Inspirations, #128 Bubbling Under 1971 - Tom Clay (medley with "Abraham, Martin, and John"), #8, #32 r&b I was glad that this song was eligible for inclusion because it is a Bacharach- David song I associate more with Hal David than with Burt Bacharach. When I first heard of Jackie DeShannon in the mid-1960s, shortly before this song was released, she was noted as a songwriter. So for the next few years, I thought she wrote this song. Then I read a magazine article about a new book by Hal David (with whom I was vaguely familiar at the time as the co-writer of some Dionne Warwick songs) called WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW AND OTHER LOVE LYRICS. The article noted that "What The World Needs Now Is Love" is one of the songs for which he wrote the lyrics. I was able to borrow a scanned copy of the book from the Internet Archive for an hour. He wrote stories about some of the songs. I was sorry to see, however, that Hal's worst song, "Johnny Get Angry," written with Sherman Edwards, is in this book. It hardly qualifies as having love lyrics. (See links to the book at Amazon and the Internet Archive in the Useful Links section.) http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ441/GOLQ441-06.mp3 #06) Five Blobs, The: "The Blob" (1958) [33] {-} <14><411> Lyricist - Mack David This is the title song of the movie of the same name. I had never heard of either the movie or the song before I put together this quiz. The Five Blobs were actually a studio group featuring Bernie Knee as the uncredited vocalist. The B-side was a Bacharach instrumental called "Saturday Night in Tiajuana [sic]." http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ441/GOLQ441-07.mp3 #07) Franklin, Aretha: "I Say A Little Prayer" (1968) [10] {3} Other notable versions: 1967 - Dionne Warwick, #4, #8 r&b Two instrumentals: 1968 - Sergio Mendes (as "Say A Little Prayer"), #106 Bubbling Under 1968 - Julius Wechter and the Baja Marimba Band, #10 Easy Listening Three duet medleys with "By the Time I Get to Phoenix": 1968 - Dee Irwin & Mamie Galore, #114 Bubbling Under 1971 - Glen Campbell & Anne Murray, #81, #40 Country, #13 Easy Listening 1977 - Isaac Hayes & Dionne Warwick, #65 r&b When the Dionne Warwick version was riding the charts in 1967, one of my schoolmates speculated that the song was about a woman saying a prayer for her man fighting over there. I didn't agree with him. But not too long ago, I came across an interview with Dionne Warwick on the American Songwriter website that said that this is actually what the song was about. You can read it here: https://americansongwriter.com/i-say-a-little-prayer-dionne-warwicks-behind-song-lyrics/ The B-side of Dionne Warwick's version of "I Say A Little Prayer" was "(Theme From) VALLEY OF THE DOLLS." It actually peaked higher on the Hot 100, at #2. Written by Andre and Dory Previn, it was one of the very few charting hits she had in the 1960s that was not a Bacharach and David song. (VALLEY OF THE DOLLS was the next-to-the-last DVD I watched from Netflix when it closed down its DVD service recently. I had seen it before. One of the reasons I wanted to see it again was to hear Dionne sing the theme song.) In all three of the medleys listed above, the woman sings "I Say A Little Prayer" while the man sings "By The Time I Get To Phoenix." http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ441/GOLQ441-08.mp3 #08) Hayes, Isaac: "Walk On By" (1969) [30] {13} <186><411> Other notable version: 1964 - Dionne Warwick, #6 This is the Burt Bacharach song that was recorded by the Beach Boys. It was released as a bonus track on CD reissues in 1990 and 2001 of the 1969 album 20/20 and was later released in the 2018 package I CAN HEAR MUSIC: THE 20/20 SESSIONS 1968. I didn't use it in my Beach Boys-themed quiz, GOLQ421, for two reasons. It had been used too recently, plus I did not use songs that were part of vault releases. http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ441/GOLQ441-09.mp3 #09) Engelbert Humperdinck: "I'm A Better Man" (1969) [38] {-} <246> http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ441/GOLQ441-10.mp3 #10) Jackson, Chuck: "Any Day Now (My Wild Beautiful Bird)" (1962) [23] {2} <24><145><284> Lyricist - Bob Hilliard Other notable versions: 1969 - Percy Sledge, #86, #35 r&b 1969 - Elvis Presley, B-side of the #3 single "In The Ghetto" 1982 - Ronnie Milsap, #14, #1 Country and Adult Contemporary Because neither the Sledge, Presley, nor Milsap 45s include the parenthetical part of the title, and the song is generally known without it, I did not deduct any points for omitting it. Jackson also charted with another Bacharach song, "I Wake Up Crying." If I had never mastered the technique of creating audio quizzes, this quiz probably would have included the Percy Sledge version of "Any Day Now" (to separate the two charting versions of "Baby It's You"), "I Wake Up Crying," and "To Wait For Love" by Herb Alpert (because his much bigger Bacharach-David vocal hit "This Guy's In Love With You" had been used too recently) instead of "Casino Royale." While this Bacharach-Hilliard song is the only Burt Bacharach song that Elvis recorded, he also recorded two songs written by Hal David with Sherman Edwards. http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ441/GOLQ441-11.mp3 #11) Johnson, Lou: "Reach Out For Me" (1963) [74] {31} Other notable version: 1964 - Dionne Warwick, #20 Lou Johnson recorded and reached at least the Bubbling Under chart with three Burt Bacharach and Hal David songs that were later hits by Dionne Warwick. The other two are "(There's) Always Something There To Remind Me" (used too recently for inclusion here) and "Kentucky Bluebird (Send A Message To Martha)" (done by her as "A Message To Michael") (Bubbled Under, plus hers was used too recently in one of my GOLQs). http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ441/GOLQ441-12.mp3 #12) Jones, Tom: "What's New Pussycat?" (1965) [3] {-} <3><252><373> This is from the movie of the same title. Another song from this film is coming up. This was the first of four Best Original Song Oscar nominations for Bacharach and David in the five-year period from 1965-1969. Two of the others, "Alfie" and "The Look Of Love," had been used too recently for inclusion here. The fourth one is yet to come in this quiz. http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ441/GOLQ441-13.mp3 #13) Billy J. Kramer and The Dakotas: "Trains And Boats And Planes" (1965) [47] {-} <148><232><308> Other notable version: 1966 - Dionne Warwick, #22, #49 r&b Earlier releases by the group showed the name Billy J. Kramer with The Dakotas. Some entries used this name. I accepted both forms as correct. http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ441/GOLQ441-14.mp3 #14) Love: "My Little Red Book" (1966) [52] {-} <114><176><285><390> Other notable version: 1965 - Manfred Mann, #124 Bubbling Under This is the other song from WHAT'S NEW PUSSYCAT? Yes, two humming clips in a row! Morning disc jockey Harv Moore of WPGC in the Washington, DC, area sang this song on his show sometimes. I actually found an audio clip of it, but it is so awful that I am not going to post the link here. GOLQ285 paid tribute to seven songwriting teams, including Bacharach and David. Another song in this quiz (#18) was also used in that one. Of the other two Bacharach and David songs in that quiz, one was used too recently this time, and I chose a different song this time by the artist of the other one. http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ441/GOLQ441-15.mp3 #15) McDaniels, Gene: "Tower of Strength" (1961) [5] {5} <16><227> Lyricist - Bob Hilliard Answer song - "You Don't Have To Be A Tower Of Strength" by Gloria Lynne, #100 The EJ'S & Co., Village Idiots, and Vito & the Salutations noted that this is with the Johnny Mann Singers. http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ441/GOLQ441-16.mp3 #16) Morgan, Jane: "With Open Arms" (1959) [39] {-} The EJ'S & Co. noted that this is with Orchestra Directed by Frank Hunter. http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ441/GOLQ441-17.mp3 #17) Pitney, Gene: "Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa" (1963) [17] {-} <81><168><290> Gene Pitney charted with four Bacharach and David songs. The others are "(The Man Who Shot) Liberty Valance," "True Love Never Runs Smooth," and "Only Love Can Break a Heart." For use in this quiz, it came down to either this song or "(The Man Who Shot) Liberty Valance." "True Love Never Runs Smooth" was used too recently, and I was saving "Only Love Can Break a Heart" in case I needed to use a version by Margaret Whiting that peaked at #96 in 1967. I remember hearing a version of "Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa" by the O'Kaysions, who had recently had the hit "Girl Watcher," on the radio in 1969. http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ441/GOLQ441-18.mp3 #18) Robbins, Marty: "The Story Of My Life" (1957/58) [15] {-} <68><181><285> Other notable versions: 1958 - Four artists in the U.K.: Michael Holiday, #1 Gary Miller, #14 Dave King, #20 Alma Cogan, #25 1962 - "Big" Al Downing, #117 Bubbling Under One or more of those U.K. hits may be what inspired two British Invasion groups, Herman's Hermits and Gerry & the Pacemakers, to record this song on albums. This song came up in a Neil Diamond fan group on Facebook recently. Neil collaborated with Burt Bacharach and Burt's then-wife Carole Bayer Sager to write several songs in the 1980s, the best-known of which is his last Top 10 hit, "Heartlight" in 1982. During this time, Neil also recorded a song he wrote by himself called "The Story Of My Life," which is on his 1986 album HEADED FOR THE FUTURE (along with two Diamond-Bacharach-Bayer Sager songs). Someone had seen somewhere that "The Story Of My Life" was written by Burt Bacharach and wondered if it was one of their collaborations. I jumped into the discussion and noted that the Burt Bacharach song with this title was not the one Neil recorded. The EJ'S & Co. and Village Idiots noted that this is with Ray Conniff and His Orchestra. http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ441/GOLQ441-19.mp3 #19) Shirelles, The: "Baby, It's You" (1961/62) [8] {3} <24><103><221><362> Lyricists - Mack David, Barney Williams (Luther Dixon) Other notable versions: 1963 - The Beatles, on their first album PLEASE, PLEASE ME 1969 - Smith, #5 1995 - The Beatles (live version), #67 I made audio snippets of the same segment in both the Shirelles and Smith versions for use of one of them in this quiz. I liked the way the one by the Shirelles turned out more than the one by Smith. My choice here was also influenced by my decision to use "I'll Never Fall In Love Again" instead of "Saturday Sunshine" for the song with Bacharach as the artist. There, I chose a 1969 song over one from the early 1960s. So here I went with one from the early 1960s instead of one from 1969. GOLQ221 (one of mine) and GOLQ362 (not one of mine) both had themes of songs that had been done by the Beatles. http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ441/GOLQ441-20.mp3 #20) Dusty Springfield: "Wishin' And Hopin'" (1964) [6] {n/c} <11><140><296> Other notable version: 1963 - Dionne Warwick, B-side of "This Empty Place," classic non-Hot 100 song In the Hal David book I mentioned earlier, he says that Dusty Springfield found this song on this Dionne Warwick B-side. I especially love a version by Dusty of the Bacharach-David song "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself." http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ441/GOLQ441-21.mp3 #21) Thomas, B.J.: "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" (1969/70) [1] {-} <85><236><308><336><393> Other notable version: 1970 - Barbara Mason, #112 Bubbling Under, #38 r&b This is the song that finally gave Burt Bacharach and Hal David their only Academy Award for Best Original Song, although Burt got one in 1981 for "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)," written with Carole Bayer Sager and two others. It was in the movie BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID. Burt also got an Oscar for Best Music, Original Score for a Motion Picture (not a Musical) for this film. The David brothers, Hal and Mack, received a combined 12 Best Original Song nominations, but this is the only one won by either of them. Mack David went 0 for 8. This record is the first one I have used in two different audio GOLQs. GOLQ393 was the one I did in which the main theme was songs that won the Best Original Song Oscar. GOLQ336 in January 2015 was one of mine, too. I included the first #1 song in each half-decade in that one, using the songs from 1955, 1960, and 1965, as well as 1970 because it had entered the chart in 1969. The artist for the 1960 song, "El Paso" by Marty Robbins, also has a song in this quiz. The first song I used in two different GOLQs was "Caroline, No" by Brian Wilson. The first song I used in a lyrics GOLQ that I had also used in an audio GOLQ was "Hearts of Stone" (The Charms in lyrics, The Fontane Sisters in audio). The first song I used in a lyrics GOLQ that I also had used in an audio GOLQ by the same artist was "Susie-Q" by Dale Hawkins. My first-ever audio GOLQ contained at least two songs that I had used in lyrics quizzes earlier, "Tobacco Road" by the Nashville Teens and "What Does It Take (To Win Your Love)" by Jr. Walker and the All Stars. http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ441/GOLQ441-22.mp3 #22) Vee, Bobby: "Be True To Yourself" (1963) [34] {-} Randy Price, The EJ'S & Co., and Village Idiots noted that this is with the Johnny Mann Singers. http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ441/GOLQ441-23.mp3 #23) Bobby Vinton: "Blue On Blue" (1963) [3] {-} <44><183> http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ441/GOLQ441-24.mp3 #24) Warwick, Dionne: "Don't Make Me Over" (1962/63) [21] {5} <7><190><348> Other notable versions: 1966 - Swinging Blue Jeans, #116 Bubbling Under 1970 - Brenda & the Tabulations, #77, #15 r&b In addition to collaborating with Bacharach and Bayer Sager, Neil Diamond has recorded three Bacharach & David songs over the years. This is one of them, along with "The Look Of Love" and "Do You Know The Way To San Jose?" That is one of two reasons I chose this song of the many Dionne Warwick songs that were eligible for this quiz and that I hadn't used for another artist here. The other reason, perhaps more important, is that this was her first hit record. That said, I totally overlooked another song that is one of my all-time favorite Bacharach and David songs. I had not realized that she had charted with this song, which many other singers have also recorded (including Dusty Springfield, as noted above)--"I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself." It was most recently used in GOLQ380, so it would have been eligible. Had I know this, that would have been the song I would have used to represent her here. http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ441/GOLQ441-25.mp3 #25) Williams, Andy: "Don't You Believe It" (1962) [39] {-} Lyricist - Bob Hilliard ------------ Tie-Breakers ------------ http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ441/GOLQ441-T1.mp3 #T1) Sellers, Peter, and The Hollies: "After The Fox" (1966) [-] {-} (Artist identified as such on 9 entries) or #T1) Hollies, The, with Peter Sellers: "After The Fox" (1966) [-] {-} (Artist identified as such on 2 entries) (One entry gave both names.) This song from the motion picture of the same name was going to be a tie-breaker in this quiz from the time I started planning it. I first became familiar with this recording when I bought the 3-CD box set THE HOLLIES 30TH ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION 1963-1993 in the 1990s, which contains it. Although my father took our family to see AFTER THE FOX, in which Peter Sellers starred, I don't remember the story or hearing this song in the film. Because the 45 and this box set list the artist as Peter Sellers and the Hollies while other Hollies albums list it as The Hollies with Peter Sellers, I needed to choose the other tie-breaker to allow for both names. That eliminated a few other Bacharach favorites including "Made In Paris" by Trini Lopez and "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" by Johnny Mathis, although I briefly considered using Dionne Warwick's version of the latter song. The B-side of this one, "The Fox Trot," is also credited to Peter Sellers and The Hollies, although it is an instrumental. Bacharach is the only credited songwriter. The music is supplied by an orchestra. http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ441/GOLQ441-T2.mp3 #T2) Vincent, Gene: "Crazy Times" (1960) [-] {-} Lyricist - Paul Hampton This is from the album with the same name. By the time it was released, the Blue Caps had been dropped from the artist name on his records. Some entries included it. I did not deduct any points for this. I found this song on an import CD from Ace records in the U.K., ALWAYS SOMETHING THERE: A BURT BACHARACH COLLECTORS' ANTHOLOGY 1952-1969. I also have another collection from Ace that I consulted for ideas for this quiz, LET THE MUSIC PLAY: BLACK AMERICA SINGS BACHARACH & DAVID. Paul Hampton must have been both a lyricist and a music composer because he also collaborated with Hal David. Their best-known collaboration is probably "Sea of Heartbreak," which was recorded by Don Gibson and others. ------------ Useful Links ------------ Ellis Bromberg of The EJ'S & Co. hosted a tribute to Bacharach after he passed away: https://soundcloud.com/ellis-bromberg/music-lyrics-with-ellis-bromberg-258-burt-bacharach Burt Bacharach website, A House Is Not A Homepage: https://bacharachonline.com/ List of Hot 100 and Bubbling Under songs written by Burt Bacharach: https://bacharachonline.com/wordpress/hit-records/ Chart hits and other notable songs written by Burt Bacharach: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_songs_written_by_Burt_Bacharach Burt Bacharach page on IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000820/ Hal David website: https://www.haldavid.com/ Hal David book "What the World Needs Now and Other Love Lyrics" on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/What-World-Needs-Other-Lyrics/dp/B0006BVTWG Hal David book "What the World Needs Now and Other Love Lyrics" on Internet Archive, where it can be checked out for one hour at a time: https://archive.org/details/whatworldneedsno0000davi One final thought from Hal David's book. On page 7, he says of Burt Bacharach, "I think of his melodies as the 'Music of the Sixties.' Fifty years from today, when they play the "Music of the Sixties," I am confident they will be playing Burt Bacharach." Considering that I have heard such songs as "I Say A Little Prayer" by both Dionne Warwick and Aretha Franklin and "What The World Needs Now Is Love" by Jackie DeShannon on the Sirius XM 1960s channel quite recently, Hal David's prediction has come true. ============================================================================= This chart ranks the songs/artists from most to least recognized. The second number on the line denotes the average number of points scored on that song (total points divided by number of entrants, to 2 decimal places). For comparison purposes, tie-breakers are scored here on the usual 20-point scale. Both tie-breakers did better than I expected them to do. I expected #T2 to do better than #T1 because I thought more participants would recognize this style of music. As it turned out, they both scored the same. I expected all of the other songs to do well once the easy-to-recognize theme became apparent. 19.67 - All 15 entries identified the song, but for each such song, one entry either omitted or incorrectly specified a key part of the artist name. 18.67 - 14 of 15 entries identified the song. 17.33 - 13 of 15 entries identified the song. 13.33 - 10 of 15 entries identified the song.
