RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #444 (GOLQ444)
Excellent scores were obtained by... EVERYONE! Four teams reached the
apogee of their orbit with perfect scores: The Coasters, The EJ'S & Co.,
Randy Price and Village Idiots. Additionally three teams identified all
the regular songs and got tripped up with a tiebreaker. All in all, amazing
recognition of these songs, some of which I thought were pretty tough.
Everyone mentioned the theme of space/planets etc.
Now, on a more somber note; I screwed up. Tiebreaker #1 was not eligible as
it was previously used in GOLQ 429. The re-use rule states that a song
cannot be used for two years after it appears in a GOLQ. I don't know how
it happened; I choose to blame space aliens.
I have now been notified that I must appear before the GOLQ Inquisitors
[nobody EVER expects the GOLQ Inquisition] and account for my misfeasence.
I have been told that the Inquisitors are a surly lot; the last person
to be before them was forced to listen to "Tutti Frutti" sung
by Pat Boone until they cried out for mercy.
At any rate, my remedy is to give everyone credit for T1 for team
scoring (Nearly everyone got it anyway) but I adjusted the song recognition
table based on actural correct answers.

I had to do a bit of hand wringing about the scoring on this one. Some
entrants identified the artist as "Mitch Miller" which fits alphabetically.
The fact that it does not fit the theme is immaterial, but there is
a suble difference (hup 2-3-4) in this version as opposed to
Mooney's version. After wringing my hands until calloused, I decided
not to credit the Miller version. Both versions are on the playlist.
[Editor's note: No hand wringing necessary. A clip of the song was the clue.
Only one artist recorded that clip. Our team originally identified the song
as by Mitch Miller. But it had a slghtly different title, which did not fit
the theme. As a result, we kept digging and found the right song. We expected
that we would not have received credit for having the wrong artist.]

I tried to pitch a curve by using two different groups
with the same name. I only succeeded in blowing out

"Royal Showband Waterford" with a raw and raucous
group from Ireland. "It's got a good beat and it's easy
to dance to", I give it an 86 and included it in the
playlist.

One of those great group harmony tunes that fall into my
"doowoppy" state of mind. According to my sources, this was
popular in Pittsburgh via Porky Chedwick. The Ocapellos were
from New Jersey and apparently received some airplay on the
East Coast as well. The make-up of the group is uncertain
(at least to me). Some folks claim the author of the
song(Bobby Kline) was a member, some say no. I find myself with
the latter.
