GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #447 ANSWERS:
Answers are in the form:

#number) Artist: "Title" (chart year) [peak Pop] {peak R&B} <xxx>...<yyy>

where:
"peak Pop" = Peak position achieved on the weekly Billboard Pop chart.
"peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart.
(Billboard didn't publish an R&B chart between 11/30/63 and 1/23/65,
so recordings in that interval show peak R&B of {n/c} ("no chart").)
"xxx",...,"yyy" = prior GOLQ(s) in which the song appeared, if any.

  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ti-LhSkNfRs (Monkees, 1968 single)

An early Monkees rendition (1st link) was recorded in August 1966 and aired
on the show's 2/20/67 episode. Some radio stations played this bootleg,
taped from the TV broadcast; it was not officially released until a 1990s
compilation. The first released version was by the Pineapple Heard
(2nd link), later in '67. The Monkees re-recorded the tune for their 1968
    single release (3rd link).

#13) Moody Blues, The: "Stop!" (1966) [98] {-} <->
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEqp6k5t51k

Original lead singer & guitarist Denny Laine died 12/5/23 at 79. He and
bassist Clint Warwick left the group in late 1966 (replaced by Justin
Hayward and John Lodge, respectively), and the band pivoted from R&B to a
more psychedelic/arty feel thereafter. Laine co-founded Wings with Paul &
Linda McCartney in 1971, remaining with them for a decade.

During the running of this quiz, the last surviving member of the original
1964 quintet - keyboardist Mike Pinder - died at 82 on 4/24/24. He left the
group after their 1978 "Octave" LP.

      (1969) [54] {-} <->
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4f2rs6n0tI0

Their follow-up to "Will You Be Staying After Sunday", with a similar theme.

Say hello to Valerie
Say hello to Marian

On the waters of oblivion
#16) Peter, Paul & Mary: "Too Much Of Nothing"
      (1967/68) [35] {-} <136><244><366>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5lXUg69bDuw (Bob Dylan & The Band, 1967)
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixbc1ugcnnE (PP&M, 1967)

Following his July 1966 motorcycle accident, Dylan convalesced for a year
at his home in Woodstock, NY. During the spring of '67, he collaborated
with members of The Hawks, who'd backed him on his previous tour; the group
renamed themselves The Band during this time. These recordings were finally
released in 1975 on the "Basement Tapes" double LP, but many of the songs he
wrote in '66/'67 had already seen the light of day, via other artists.

According to Paul Stookey, Dylan was displeased that PP&M changed
"Vivienne" to "Marian". Vivienne/oblivion clearly rhymes better, but
apparently the bigger sin was that the change muddied Dylan's intended
allusion to poet T. S. Eliot (whose two wives were Vivienne and Valerie).

There was a heart
So happy and so gay
Right from the start
That heart was mine
#17) Rochell and The Candles with Johnny Wyatt: "Once Upon A Time"

#18) Shangri-Las, The: "Give Us Your Blessings" (1965) [29] {-} <214>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFpHFE8qrJU

Lead singer Mary Weiss died 1/19/24 at 75.

It seems life has played a game on me
I'm lost in a sea of misery
My love has turned his back on me
Heartache, why won't you let me be?
#19) Shaw, Marlena: "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" (1967) [58] {33} <->
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xv5ePtJKO0Y

Died 1/19/24 at 84. Original instrumental version of the song, written by
Joe Zawinul, was a hit for Cannonball Adderley. Other charting vocal
versions in '67 (with quite different lyrics from Marlena's) were by
The Buckinghams and by Larry Williams & Johnny Watson.

As I was walking by the shore
I happened there to see
A woman's form a-lying there

#20) Smothers Brothers, The: "Jenny Brown" (1963) [84] {-} <262><330>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xg87Q2SAyLk (LP version)

Tom Smothers, the elder brother, died 12/26/23 at 86. Link above is the
5-minute "live" version from their 1964 LP "It Must Have Been Something
    I Said!". The 45 (which I couldn't find a link to) is a sub-2-minute
studio version, minus all the fraternal banter.

Sometimes a man has too much pride to see
But losing your love, my darling, has opened my eyes for me
Darling, your going away
Hurts me more and more each day
#21) Spinners, The: "I'll Always Love You" (1965) [35] {8} <131>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iH9SlpjFwR0

Henry Fambrough, last original member of the group, died 2/7/24 at 85.
He sang with them from their founding in 1954 until he retired in 2023.
    Bobby Smith sings lead here.

If your first lover broke your heart
There's something that can be done
(You don't run, you don't hide, you don't run, you don't hide)
Don't end your faith in love
Because of what he's done

#23) Vaughan, Sarah: "Make Yourself Comfortable" (1954/55) [6] {-} <->

#24) Willows, The: "Church Bells May Ring" (1956) [62] {11} <26><196>
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tF_taPrx2nM

Co-written by the group's lead singer, Tony Middleton, who died 2/7/24 at
    89. Cover version by The Diamonds was more successful (pop #14).
A re-issue of The Willows' version bubbled under at #114 in 1961.

People keep happy
You'll be happier yet for there's help, you forget
When you are happy every place feels like home 'cause you're never alone
There's much to be said but it's all in your head

Mike Weaver mentioned that it was a local hit in Pittsburgh. The title
references the then-popular Western series "Have Gun - Will Travel."

This clever 58-second-long ditty concludes their second (eponymous) album,
and appears as the B-side of "Look Through My Window."

Tom Pillion informed me of a rendition by Sue Raney (3rd link), from her
    1967 "New and Now!" LP.

The "special" letters rearrange to spell out the class teacher, ABIGAIL
BEECHER, and the singled-out student, CHARLIE BROWN.

Extra credit: The dots scattered about the room mark the landing spots of
certain projectiles. Their associated "extra credit" letters rearrange
to spell out the reason for Charlie's banishment: THROWING SPITBALLS.
He's a clown, that Charlie Brown!

A+ to all those who solved the entire puzzle!
