RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #451 (GOLQ451)

WOW! Virtually everyone qualified as lead chair in this orchestra.
Every team harmonized and got all 25 regular songs correct and only
one team missed getting them all by a single tie-breaker. I am truly
impressed. I may have to order more ink for my "500++" rubber stamp.

Every one also identified the theme (instumentals) and most identified
the subtheme (TV/Movie themes).

I have created a playlist containing the regular songs, a few alternate
and several vocal versions:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLOM9kp_8LqitcfcP8eReR3e9orvMNWPvo
The usual Youtube caveats apply.

Thanks to everyone who entered.

                GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #451 ANSWERS:
Answers are in the form:

    #number) Artist: "Title" (chart year) [peak Pop] {peak R&B} <xxx>...<yyy>

where:
    "peak Pop" = Peak position achieved on the weekly Billboard Pop chart.
    "peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart.
        (Billboard didn't publish an R&B chart between 11/30/63 and 1/23/65,
        so recordings in that interval show peak R&B of {n/c} ("no chart").)
    "xxx",...,"yyy" = prior GOLQ(s) in which the song appeared, if any.

#01) Anthony, Ray & His Orchestra: "Peter Gunn" (1959) [8] {12}
Theme from U.S. television show starring Craig Stevens which ran on NBC from
1958 to 1960, and then on ABC in 1960 and 1961. Actually, the show used
the music by the author, Henry Mancini.
Many instrumental groups have a version of this including Duane Eddy
(#27, 1960) and there is a much later vocal version by Sarah Vaughn.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ451/GOLQ451-02.mp3
#02) Beecher, Johnny And His Buckingham Road Quartet: "Sax Fifth Avenue"
(1963) [65]
Although I cannot find verification my (never-to-be-trusted) memory says
this song was used at show closing by Alan Freed. If so, it must
have been during his west coast days because the 1963 date
is after the payola scandals and his subsequent DJ employment
problems.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ451/GOLQ451-03.mp3
#03) Black's, Bill Combo: "White Silver Sands" (1960) [9] {1}
Several vocal Billboard versions in 1957: Owen Bradley Quintet,
Don Rondo, and Dave Gardner.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ451/GOLQ451-04.mp3
#04) Booker T. & The MG's: "Time Is Tight" (1969) [6] {7} <273>

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ451/GOLQ451-05.mp3
#05) Cortez, Dave "Baby": "Rinky Dink" (1962) [10] {9} <194><367>
As I have previously commented; the tune is essentially the same
as "The Cha Cha Cha" by Bobby Rydell, although listed author credits
are different. The release dates are within months of each other
with "Rinky" being earliest.   Hmmmm.
I put both on the Youtube playlist so you can compare and contrast.
It will be 40% of your grade (just kidding).
The Coasters noted that although Whitburn lists the artist name as
above, the original Chess 45 merely says "Baby Cortez". True, but
the original Julia release has "Dave...". Julia and Chess
were intertwined and both releases have the same number. Probably
just did it to drive record collectors nuts.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ451/GOLQ451-06.mp3
#06) Eddy Duane: "Pepe" (1960) [18] {-}
Theme from the movie of the same name, although not not done
by Eddy in the picture itself. Instead it is sung by
Shirley Jones.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ451/GOLQ451-07.mp3
#07) Fabric, Bent and His Piano: "Chicken Feed" (1963) [63]
Real name = Bent Fabricius-Bjerre.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ451/GOLQ451-08.mp3
#08) Faith, Percy: "Theme For Young Lovers" (1960) [35]

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ451/GOLQ451-09.mp3
#09) Ferrante & Teicher: "Exodus" (1960/61) [2] {6} <222>
Title song from the movie of the same name. F&T are not the soundtrack
artists; that distinction belongs to Ernest Gold using the
song name "Theme Of Exodus". There are many instrumental and vocal
versions; the most recognized vocal version being by Pat Boone.
Pat Boone's name is listed as co-author on most vocal versions.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ451/GOLQ451-10.mp3
#10) Fields, Ernie Orchestra: "In The Mood" (1959) [4] {7}
Originally done by Glenn Miller and His Orchestra 1940.
Vocal versions exist as far back as 1939 (The Four
King Sisters) although the only notable one close to the
GOLQ era would be by the Andrews Sisters (1952).

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ451/GOLQ451-11.mp3
#11) Ingmann, Jorgen, and His Guitar: "Anna" (1961) [54] {-}
From the 1951 film of the same name. There is a vocal
version by Silvana Mangano, although it seems likely that
her voice has been dubbed on the record; i.e., it is not her
singing. The recording as well as one by Perez Prado were
Billboard hits in 1953.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ451/GOLQ451-12.mp3
#12) Johnny and The Hurricanes: "Red River Rock" (1959) [5] {5} <206>

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ451/GOLQ451-13.mp3
#13) Kaempfert, Bert, and His Orchestra: "Wonderland By Night"
(1960/61) [1] {5} <246>
The label lists the trumpet solo as being by Charly Tabor.
Another instrumental version charted in 1961; Louis Prima (#15)
and also a vocal version by Anita Bryant (#18).

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ451/GOLQ451-14.mp3
#14) Martin, George & His Orchestra: "Ringo's Theme (This Boy)"
(1964) [53] {n/c}
From the movie "A Hard Days Night"

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ451/GOLQ451-15.mp3
#15) Mauriat, Paul, and His Orchestra: "Love In Every Room"
(1968) [60] {-}
The 45 has a parenthetical "Meme Si Tu Revenais" {Even If
You Came Back} as part of the title. Given the subtheme,
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang would have been a better choice.
I discovered a vocal version by "Mike Durney", a name I
am not familiar with.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ451/GOLQ451-16.mp3
#16) May, Billy and His Orchestra: "Main Title From 'The Man
With The Golden Arm' " (1956) (49) {-}
Motion picture theme composed by Elmer Bernstein, whose version
is used in the film's soundtrack and was also a billboard charter.
Other charters included Les Elgart and Buddy Morrow.
I am unaware of any vocal versions.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ451/GOLQ451-17.mp3
#17) Noguez, Jacky & His Orchestra: "Amapola" (1960) [63] {-}

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ451/GOLQ451-18.mp3
#18) Pyramids, The "Penetration" (1964) [18] {n/c}

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ451/GOLQ451-19.mp3
#19) Ross, Spencer: "Tracy's Theme" (1960) [13] {-}
The Whitburn entry for this says it was used in the 1959
television show "The Philadelphia Story". I will take his
word for it since I never saw the show.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ451/GOLQ451-20.mp3
#20) Santo & Johnny; "Teardrop" (1959/60) [23] {17}

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ451/GOLQ451-21.mp3
#21) String-A-Longs, The: "Wheels" (1961) [3] {19} <244>

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ451/GOLQ451-22.mp3
#22) Valjean: "Theme From Ben Casey" (1962) [28] {-} <283>
Not the artist used in the show opening.
(Man), (Woman), (Birth), (Death), (Infinity)
Does it still work this way?

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ451/GOLQ451-23.mp3
#23) Viscounts, The: "Harlem Nocturne" (1959/60,1965/66)
[52,39] {17,-} <349>
First done in the 1940 by Ray Noble Orchestra, two members
of which wrote the song. There is at least one vocal version
by Ernistine Anderson from 1965.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ451/GOLQ451-24.mp3
#24) Welk, Lawrence: "The Poor People Of Paris" (1956) [17] {-}
Recorded by many others, principally Les Baxter.
Wikipedia: ...It is based on the French language song
"La goualante du pauvre Jean" ("The Ballad of Poor John"),
with music by Marguerite Monnot and words by Rene Rouzaud.
Edith Piaf had one of her biggest hits with the original
French version.
The song was adapted in 1954 by American songwriter Jack Lawrence,
who wrote English lyrics that are considerably different
from the original French ones. The English language title
arises in part from a misinterpretation of the French title,
as "pauvre Jean" was taken for the same-sounding "pauvres gens",
which translates as "poor people."
Other than the French version by Piaf I do not have or
can find any reference to a version by Jack Lawrence.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ451/GOLQ451-25.mp3
#25) Williams, Roger: "Laura's Theme from 'Dr. Zhivago' " (1966) [65] {-}
Although not the opening title music for the 1965 movie in the
strictest sense, this melody is highly evocative of it. Quite a few
vocal versions exist, probably best known is by the Ray Coniff
Singers "Somewhere My Love {Lara's Theme}" (#9, 1966) Being the sneaky devil
I am, this snippet does not have a counterpart in the vocal version.

#T1) Baxter, Les with His Chorus and Orchestra: "The High and The Mighty"
(1954) [4] {-}
From the blockbuster 1954 movie of the same name, instrumentally recorded
by many others. Once again, this is not the soundtrack version
(Dimitri Tiomkin). The only vocal version I am aware of is by
Johnny Desmond (#17, 1954), but there are probably others.
Although it has a different 'sound' I also accepted "Dimitri
Tomkins and His Orchestra". I have a rationale for this that
is too lengthy to post here, but I can provide it if anyone
wants it.

http://golq.org/Clips/GOLQ451/GOLQ451-T2.mp3
#T2) Winding, Kai: "Mondo Cane #2" (1964) [120] {-}
My education was sadly neglected; I never saw the original
"Mondo Cane". My friends all told me "it's really disgusting,
you should go see it". (Gives you an idea of the crowd I
was in with.) Imagine my surprise to discover there was
a sequel; I didn't see it either. As far as I know, there
is no vocal version, unlike the original Mondo Cane for
which there are several.
Really Rockin: "Like 'More' from the 'Mondo Cane" soudtrack, the
Ondioline, an early electronic instrument is heard. It would also be
heard in Tommy James and the Shondells 'Mirage and 'I Think We're
Alone Now'. Also Terry Stafford 'Suspicion'.
I confess to never having heard of this instrument but found that
Wikipedia has an extensive article on it.
==========================================================================
Song Recognition.

Normally there would be a table here listing songs in order on a
scale from 20.00 (everyone identified the song) to 0.00 (no one
identified the song). In this unique case all songs from #01 through
T1 were identified, so they would all be 20.00, and so the table
is rendered moot. The exception is #T2, so:

17.14 #T2) Winding, Kai: "Mondo Cane #2"

As always the prowess of the regulars in this group amazes me. Cruising
through the songs Whitburn designates as "I" I found several I would
not have recognized if I was trying to solve this quiz instead of
creating it.
