RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #458 (GOLQ458)

Congratulations to Randy Price, who submitted very early; EJ's & Co.; and,
the Village Idiots, who tied for first place with perfect scores, and to
Barry Silk who identified all 25 songs in the main part of the quiz!

The quiz proved to be relatively easy with 16 of the 25 songs in the main part
of the quiz being correctly identified by everyone. Number 12 proved to be the
stumper I thought it would be. I also thought number 25 would be difficult, but
it was identified by most teams. Everyone did well and correctly noted my theme
relating to eyesight and vision, which I thought was appropriate for me since my
deteriorating eyesight is the reason I retired as a regular quizmaster. (It
takes me an inordinate amount of time to prepare both the quiz and the results,
and I am prone to making mistakes that I do not catch prior to publishing.)

Thanks to everyone who participated. Will McCorry has already posted GOLQ459.

GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #458 ANSWERS:
Answers are in the form:

#number) Artist: "Title" (chart year) [peak Pop] {peak R&B} <xxx>...<yyy>

where:
"peak Pop" = Peak position achieved on the weekly Billboard Pop chart.
"peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart.
(Billboard didn't publish an R&B chart between 11/30/63 and 1/23/65,
so recordings in that interval show peak R&B of {n/c} ("no chart").)
"xxx",...,"yyy" = prior GOLQ(s) in which the song appeared, if any.

Note: The Auto-correct feature changed my lyric in the published quiz to read
"slippin' mules," and I missed that during my proofing. Thanks to Randy Price
and Delphi Trivia for catching the error, which I have corrected in these
results.

Look around, and you will see
#20) Presley, Elvis, with The Jordanaires: "There's Always Me"
      (1967) [56] {-} <217>

Unsolicited commentary: This ballad was a favorite of mine when it was
originally included on his 1962 "Pot Luck" album. After the British invasion
in 1964, Elvis struggled to keep pace with the emerging flood of great mid-60's
artists like the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Lovin' Spoonful, Byrds, Mamas and
Papas, and on and on. In my opinion, the movies he made during that period, as
well as most of the songs from those movies, were mediocre at best. I think RCA
recognized this and so released singles of his earlier recorded quality material
like "Crying In The Chapel," and this lovely "There's Always Me."
Unfortunately, it did not get much air play (I barely remember hearing it on the
radio), so I can understand why it was not more easily recognizable in this
quiz. Fortunately, Elvis rebounded in the late 1960s and early 70s with better
quality songs like "In The Ghetto," "Suspicious Minds," and "Burning Love."
R.I.P. Elvis.

Got me peepin', got me hidin'
Got me peep, hide, hide, peep, any way you wanna let it roll
#21) Reed, Jimmy: "Baby What You Want Me To Do" (1960) [37] {10} <217>

So remember if you're untrue
Angels up in heaven are looking at you
#22) Warwick, Dionne: "You'll Never Get To Heaven (If You Break My Heart)"
      (1964) [34] {n/c} <100><225><308>

I guess I'll never see the light
I get the blues most every night
#23) Welch, Lenny: "Since I Fell For You" (1963/64) [4] {n/c} <4><101><191><306>

She sure looked swell
I told her that I loved her, I'd never leave
She put her arms around me, gave me fever
#24) Williams, Larry, and His Band: "Short Fat Fannie"
      (1957) [5] {1} <27><107><195>

We met by the lamp where the newsboy cried
He stole my heart with his laughing eyes
#25) Wright, Priscilla, with Don Wright & The Septette: "The Man In The
      Raincoat" (1955) [16] {-} <150><338>

------------
Tie-Breakers

Statues made of match sticks crumble into one another
My love winks, she does not bother
She knows too much to argue or to judge
#T1) Dylan, Bob: "Love Minus Zero/No Limit" (1965) [-] {-} <->

Note: From his "Bringing It All Back Home" album.

Well, if I'd a-known the Capt'n was blind, Darlin', Darlin'
If I'd a-known the Capt'n was blind, Darlin', Darlin'
If I'd a-known the Capt'n was blind
I wouldn't-a gone to work 'til half past nine, Darlin', Darlin'
#T2) Ian & Sylvia: "Rocks And Gravel" (1962) [-] {-} <->

Note: "It takes rocks and gravel to make a solid road." Another personal
favorite. Opening song on their debut album on the Vanguard label. This was
their rendition of an old spiritual oriented blues song, also titled "Early In
The Mornin'," covered by various artists during the folk boom of the 1960's, and
variations of which are still sung today. Although they were not my intended
artist and sing "MY Capt'n" instead of "THE Capt'n" I also accepted the Halifax
Three as the artist.
