RESULTS & ANSWER KEY for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #460 (GOLQ460)

There was a three-way tie for first place. Congratulations to Team Teitellion
(first to submit a perfect score), Tri-State Trivia, and Village Idiots, all
with perfect scores. The Coasters and Virve Juopperi were close behind.

The tie-breaker theme was groups whose names were inspired by a 60s song title.
The average score was 423. Nine songs were identified by all teams. Some teams
noticed there were six songs in the 67-69 era. My apologies, I made a
last-minute change to one of the songs and caused that.

Teams that submitted Puzzler answers are Team Teitellion, the EJs & Co.,
Virve Juopperi, and Will McCorry. The complete Puzzler solution is below.
And thanks to Bob Bluestein for continuing to provide these puzzlers.

Thanks to everyone who entered. GOLQ #461 will be posted shortly, if it hasn't
already.

GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #454 ANSWERS:
Answers are in the form:

#number) Artist: "Title" (chart year) [peak Pop] {peak R&B} <xxx>...<yyy>
where:
"peak Pop" = Peak position achieved on the weekly Billboard Pop chart.
"peak R&B" = Peak position on the weekly Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart.
(Billboard didn't publish an R&B chart between 11/30/63 and 1/23/65,
so recordings in that interval show peak R&B of {n/c} ("no chart").)
"xxx",...,"yyy" = prior GOLQ(s) in which the song appeared, if any.

with.

Tie-Breakers

What have you done, uh huh huh
Slippin' slidin' down-a Highway 31, mm mm mm
The traffic lights changed from green to red
They tried to slow but they both wound up dead
Someone's gonna make you pay your fare
Someone's gonna make you pay your fare
#T1) Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band: "Death Cab For Cutie"  (1967) [-] {-} <->
QM: This song is best known for appearing in the Beatles TV-movie,
Magical Mystery Tour, and for inspiring a 90s alt-rock group to use
the song title as their name.
About the song title, Neil Innes of the Bonzos first came across it in
a pulp fiction magazine he saw in a street market. He decided, with fellow
Bonzo Vivian Stanshall, to write a 'parody' teen-tragedy song, with that name.
Neil would later be a frequent collaborator with Monty Python. He also
co-created the Rutles, a Beatles-parody project, like the later Blues
Brothers and Spinal Tap.
Vivian Stanshall was later heard as the voice that announces all the
instruments in Tubular Bells.
The Beatles TV-movie was not broadcast in the U.S. If you look hard enough
on the web for it, you can view it. Archive.org is one location.

No one tried to say a thing
When they carried him out in jest
Except, of course, the little neighbor boy
Who carried him to rest
And he just walked along, alone
With his guilt so well concealed
And muttered underneath his breath
"Nothing is revealed"
#T2) Bob Dylan: The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest (1967) [-] {-} <->
QM: The song title inspired the group Judas Priest, founded in 1969.
When I looked for other groups whose names were inspired by 60s song titles,
the pickings were few. They include:
-The Sisters Of Mercy (Leonard Cohen song), an 80s British rock band.
-Jo Jo Gunne (Chuck Berry song), a 70s one semi-hit wonder group. Their song was
Run, Run, Run, and featured Jay Ferguson, formerly with Spirit.
-Nazareth (from The Band: The Weight). They were listening to that album while
deciding their name and 'pulled into Nazareth' appealed to them.
-Deep Purple took their name from the song of the same name, but it was first a
30s song, before Nino Tempo and April Stevens recorded it in the 60s.

The following table ranks the songs from most recognized to least recognized.
The first column indicates the average number of points scored on that song

tie-breakers are scored here on the usual 20-point scale.

Most letters of the clue answers fill in the diagram - one letter per
complete brick - as follows: The digit-letter combination under a clue
answer's slot identifies the diagram's "brick" that that slot's answer
letter fills. For example, if a slot is filled with the answer letter
"Q" and the digit-letter combination under the slot is "1e", then a "Q"
goes into the brick centered at row "1", column "e". Note that here a
"row" is two layers of brick, so that the top layer of row "1" contains
bricks "1b", "1d",..., "1r", while the second layer contains bricks
"1c", "1e", ..., "1q". Note that row "6" has only a top layer of bricks.

If a clue answer slot has simply an "a" below it, then its answer
letter fills one of the diagram's column "a" slots. If a clue answer
slot has simply an "s" below it, then its answer letter fills one of
the diagram's column "s" slots. The correctly ordered letters of column
"a" spell out a pertinent phrase, as do the correctly ordered letters
of column "s".

The result is that the letters filling the bricks spell out (adding
spaces and punctuation) "(TODAY I MET) THE BOY I'M GONNA MARRY / THEN HE
KISSED ME / YOU'VE LOST THAT LOVIN' FEELIN' / BE MY BABY / RIVER DEEP -
MOUNTAIN HIGH", five prime examples of producer Phil Spector's famous
dense orchestral production technique, the "Wall of Sound". The letters
of column "a" rearrange to spell "PHIL SPECTOR", and the letters of column
"s" rearrange to spell the Puzzler's theme, "WALL OF SOUND", which the
diagram of bricks represents. In addition, one column of the clue answers'
letters spells out (adding spaces and punctuation) "HE'S A REBEL / BABY,
I LOVE YOU", two more examples of Spector's production technique.

Spector considered his production of Ike & Tina Turner's "River Deep -
Mountain High" to epitomize the Wall of Sound technique. Brian Wilson once
declared "Be My Baby" to be the greatest pop record ever made; Wilson
himself used the technique in creating "Wouldn't It Be Nice" and "Good
Vibrations". Other prominent uses of the Wall of Sound approach include
Sonny & Cher's "I Got You Babe", Dusty Springfield's "I Only Want To Be
With You", The Shangri-Las' "Leader of the Pack", and Simon & Garfunkel's
"Bridge Over Troubled Water".

Here's hoping you had fun completing the diagram's "Wall of Sound", brick
by brick!
