A copy of the quiz is attached below. Enjoy! Howard ############################################################################# GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #30 Believe it or not, the Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz series hits the big 3-0 with this edition. Unlike the last several quizzes, there are no tiebreaker songs; just the standard 25 this time. I'm posting this quiz earlier than scheduled because I'm going on vacation. The due date remains the same (Aug. 18), so you have an extra 0.5 week to think about your answers! REMINDER: Entries for GOLQ#29 are due to Jamie Lubin (jil@donuts0.bellcore.com) by 5 P.M. EDT on July 29. -- Howard Teitelbaum (hat@floyd.att.com) _____________________________________________________________________________ Rules for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quizzes: (These rules are based on those by David Griboff and Valentino Herrera. They have been enhanced over time by the GOLQ Authors: Rick Schubert, Barry Silk, Howard Teitelbaum, Ron Crandall, Carole Hanrahan, and Jamie Silk.) 1) PLEASE READ THESE RULES FIRST!! 2) The songs are listed in alphabetical order by artist - as it actually appeared on the original 45 record. When I don't have access to the original 45, my source is Joel Whitburn's "Top Pop Singles 1955-1990" unless I have evidence indicating that source is incorrect. Songs should be alphabetized according to the following rules, unless I've made a mistake: Names beginning with "Mc" are alphabetized as if they were spelled "Mac". Names beginning with "St." are alphabetized as if they were spelled "Saint". Artists' names that begin with a number or with a punctuation symbol will be alphabetized using the word equivalent of the number or symbol. If a song has been done by more than one artist, the correct response will be the one that fits alphabetically. If you don't know which one fits alphabetically because you have not identified adjoining songs, you may include multiple artists in your entry, but you will only receive credit if you include the one that fits alphabetically. If a lead singer's name is used as part of the artist's name, the following alphabetization rules apply: - If the last name is used as in "Firstname Lastname & the Group" it will be alphabetized under Lastname. - If the last name is used as in "the Group featuring Firstname Lastname" it will be alphabetized under Group. - If the last name is not used as in "Firstname & the Group" it will be alphabetized under Firstname. - If no last name is used, but a nickname is used before the firstname as in "Nickname Firstname & the Group" is alphabetized under Nickname. For example: Artist Alphabetized by "The Crickets featuring Buddy Holly" "Crickets" "Buddy Holly & the Crickets" "Holly" "Little Anthony & the Imperials" "Little" "Little Richard" "Little" "Little Peggy March" "March" "Martha & the Vandellas" "Martha" 3) Artists may be repeated from previous Golden Oldies quizzes. An artist will not be used more than once in any given quiz. 4) Songs will not be repeated from previous Golden Oldies quizzes. 5) Songs WILL BE from the period 1955-1969 only, of course!! 6) Songs are singles that hit the Top 100 on the American Pop Charts. Although most songs will have made the top twenty-five or so, expect a couple of songs in the quiz that will challenge the experts out there. 7) There are 25 songs to identify; each song is worth 20 points. Each Title is worth 10 points; each Artist is worth 10 points. A perfect score is 500 points. You should try to get as close as possible to the way it appears on the label; partial credit will be given for imperfect answers. 8) Append your answers to the lines that begin "#dd)", where "dd" are two digits. You may delete the original lyrics or not; I will look for lines beginning with those 4 characters (possibly preceded by ">" and/or " "). 9) Please answer the questions at the end. Answers must be received by 5:00 PM EDT on TUESDAY, AUG. 18, 1992. Try to e-mail early since I don't know how long it takes to get here. E-mail (DO NOT post) answers to: hat@floyd.att.com And now the songs!!!!! _____________________________________________________________________________ Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #30 (Songs were from 1957 through 1969) Due 5:00 PM EDT, Tuesday, Aug. 18, 1992 _____________________________________________________________________________ Baby, sometimes I'm so carefree With a joy that's hard to hide And sometimes it seems that all I have to do is worry And then you're bound to see my other side #01) Is she in somebody's arms And is he holding her the way I used to do? #02) Because a friend won't say it's over And go out, just for spite #03) Girl, I still love you I'll always love you Anyway #04) Gone, my lover's dream Lovely summer's dream Gone and left me here #05) If I could meet 'em, I could get 'em But as yet I haven't met 'em That's why I'm in the state I'm in #06) The sounds are spinnin' Every Friday night They dance the greatest And they do it right #07) Why must I feel like I'm trying to steal what she's giving Now is the time that we both take a stand And it's time that we learned about living #08) Now it begins Day after day This is my life Ticking away #09) Kick your feet up Swing your arms up too Move your head both ways Like you see me do #10) I knew from the first time I kissed you That you were the troublin' kind 'Cause the honey that drips from your sweet lips One taste and I'm out of my mind #11) Though I'm just one of your lovers And I know there are so many others You do something strange to me, baby #12) At the close of day When the joys of the day fade away And the memories sweet Of the day repeat #13) I'll never do you wrong I'll never make you cry If you stop loving me I know that I'll just die #14) I can't choose It's too much to lose My love's too strong #15) We stopped at the record hop I had to be a sport We stomped and we did the slop Then you walked in And I was caught #16) Would you believe that yesterday This girl was in my arms and swore to me She'd be mine eternally #17) Looks like nothing's gonna change Everything still remains the same I can't do what ten people tell me to do So I guess I'll remain the same #18) The story that I tell I know it oh so well It's not a fairy tale And it's really really true #19) Something's missin' When we're twistin' #20) Hatty told Matty Let's don't take no chance Let's not be L-7 Come and learn to dance #21) You're telling everybody I'm the one To blame for all the wrong that you have done #22) When I said I needed you You said you would always stay It wasn't me who changed, but you And now you've gone away #23) You never walk alone And you're forever talking on the phone I tried to call you names But every time it comes out the same #24) And when I tried it I could see you fall And I decided It's not a trip at all #25) _____________________________________________________________________________ Please answer the following questions (append your answer to the line): Name(s) = Age(s) [optional; will be published if answered] = Number of people (including you) who contributed to your answers = _____________________________________________________________________________ -- Howard Teitelbaum (hat@floyd.att.com)
