From: hernando@cbnewsm.cb.att.com (howard.a.teitelbaum) Newsgroups: rec.games.trivia Subject: Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #43 -- SURROGATE POST Message-ID: Date: 19 May 93 12:59:34 GMT Organization: AT&T I'm posting this on behalf of Barry Silk, who is having difficulty with his news access. Please address your entries and/or comments to Barry at: bsilk@charm.isi.edu -------------------cut here------------------ Greetings Oldies Fans! It's nice to be back here running a GOLQ after my long absence from the Internet -- since GOLQ26. There have been no changes to the general rules. After the 25 regular songs, there are 2 tie-breakers. These 2 songs will not be in the alphabetical mix with the other 25, but will be alphabetized with respect to one another. What these versions have in common is that they were released between 1955 & 1969 but failed to reach the Top 100 on the Pop charts; covers may be involved. Good luck to y'all! Barry Answers must be received by 5:00PM EST on Tuesday, June 8, 1993. Try to e-mail early since I don't know how long it takes to get here. E-mail (DO NOT post) answers to: bsilk@charm.isi.edu P.S. There is currently a vote being taken for the creation of a new newsgroup called rec.music.50s-60s! I highly recommend a YES vote! To vote, or for more information about rec.music.50s-60s, please send e-mail to Rick Schubert (rns@npg-sd.sandiegoca.ncr.com). _____________________________________________________________ Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #43 (Songs were from 1955 through 1968) Due 5:00 PM EDT, Tuesday, June 8, 1993 _____________________________________________________________ I don't know who you're with I don't even know where you've gone My only hope is that someday you might hear this song And you'll know that I wrote it especially for you And I love you wherever you are #01) She loves to cry upon my shoulder Always for some other guy Oh why can't she see The one true lasting love in her life Should be me #02) He's gonna get caught Just you wait and see Why's everybody always pickin' on me? #03) I met him on a Monday and my heart stood still #04) Oh, why won't you let me love you What does it take to make you see All the precious time you've been a-wasting, baby You could have been sharing it with me #05) If I got on my knees And pleaded with you not to go But to stay in my arms Would you walk out the door Like you did once before #06) It's a modern changing world Everything is moving fast But when it comes to love I like What they did in the past #07) I never knew that love could hurt me like this 'Til you came along with your kiss Then I fell under your spell Knowing quite well that you'd only hurt me #08) Light our way Keep that doorway open wide Until we come slowly strolling side by side #09) Come right back I just can't bear it I've got some love And I'd love to share it Come right back I'll show my love is strong, oh yeah #10) Like needles and pins People say You've been makin' out okay She's in love Don't stand in her way #11) She mesmerizes every mothers' son If she smiling, beefsteak become well-done She make grandpa feel like twenty-one #12) But at night it's a diff'rent world Go out and find a girl Come on, come on and dance all night Despite the heat it'll be alright #13) I found it in a tree just the other day And now its mine all mine They won't take it away #14) Maybe tomorrow A new romance No more sorrow But that's the chance You've gotta take #15) Just because you said goodbye You think that I will die Just because you broke my heart Now you're thinking you're so smart #16) My chick's dynamite It's kicks every night #17) Late one night I stole some dough She took it all and she let me go Got me stranded Got me branded #18) He used to pull my hair But I didn't really care I loved him even then When he was twelve and I was ten #19) She's been hurt so much They treat her mean and cruel They try keep us far apart There's only one thing left we can do #20) Why oh why oh why oh why oh why oh why (tell me why) Won't you tell me why (I wanna know why) Oh I'm gonna say right now little girl I wanna know why, why #21) Sunsets are for lovers And dads and mothers Oh and little girls and their brothers #22) I tell by the way you dress That you're so refined And by the way you talk That you're just my kind #23) There's two of us to kiss you Two of us to miss you And two of us to wish there were two of you #24) If you say that you'll be mine And make my dreams come true I'll be completely forever yours I pray that someday (someday) You'll say (you'll say) What I long to hear #25) --------------------------------------------- Tie-breakers --------------------------------------------- At last my dream's come true Today he said "I do" Friends said it couldn't be done But all his love I know I've won #TB1) I will love you longer than forever Promise that you will leave me never Here and now dear All my love I vow dear #TB2) --------------------------------------------- Please answer the following questions (Append your answer to line): Name(s) = E-mail address = Age(s) [will be published if answered] = Number of people (including yourself) who contributed to your answers = --------------------------------------------- Barry bsilk@charm.isi.edu _____________________________________________________________ General Rules for Golden Oldies Lyrics Quizzes: (These rules have been crafted over time by the GOLQ Authors: Rick Schubert, Barry Silk, Howard Teitelbaum, Ron Crandall, Carole Hanrahan, Jamie Lubin, and Dan Murphy. They are based on earlier quiz rules by David Griboff and Valentino Herrera.) 1) PLEASE READ THESE RULES FIRST!! 2) The songs are listed in alphabetical order by artist - as it actually appeared on the original 45 record. When I don't have access to the original 45, my source is Joel Whitburn's "Top Pop Singles 1955-1986" unless I have evidence indicating that source is incorrect. Songs should be alphabetized according to the following rules, unless I've made a mistake: Names beginning with "Mc" are alphabetized as if they were spelled "Mac". Names beginning with "St." are alphabetized as if they were spelled "Saint". Artists' names that begin with a number will be alphabetized using the word equivalent of the number. If a song has been done by more than one artist, the correct response will be the one that fits alphabetically. If you don't know which one fits alphabetically because you have not identified adjoining songs, you may include multiple artists in your entry, but you will only receive credit if you include the one that fits alphabetically. If a lead singer's name is used as part of the artist's name, the following alphabetization rules apply: - If the last name is used as in "Firstname Lastname & the Group" it will be alphabetized under Lastname. - If the last name is used as in "the Group featuring Firstname Lastname" it will be alphabetized under Group. - If the last name is not used as in "Firstname & the Group" it will be alphabetized under Firstname. - If no last name is used, but a nickname is used before the firstname as in "Nickname Firstname & the Group" is alphabetized under Nickname. For example: Artist Alphabetized by "The Crickets featuring Buddy Holly" "Crickets" "Buddy Holly & the Crickets" "Holly" "Little Anthony & the Imperials" "Little" "Little Richard" "Little" "Little Peggy March" "March" "Martha & the Vandellas" "Martha" 3) Artists may be repeated from previous Golden Oldies quizzes. An artist will not be used more than once in any given quiz. 4) Songs will not be repeated from previous Golden Oldies quizzes, whether by the same artist or by a different artist. However, a different song with the same title may be used. 5) Songs WILL BE from 1955-1969 only, of course!! Re 1955: a record may have entered the charts in 1954 as long as it was still on the charts in 1955. Re 1969: a record entering the charts in 1969 may still be on the charts in 1970. 6) Songs are singles that hit the Top 100 on the American Pop Charts. Although most songs will have made the top twenty-five or so, expect a couple of songs in the quiz that will challenge the experts out there. 7) There are 25 songs to identify; each song is worth 20 points. Each Title is worth 10 points; each Artist is worth 10 points. A perfect score is 500 points. You should try to get as close as possible to the way it appears on the label; partial credit will be given for imperfect answers. 8) Append your answers to the lines that begin "#dd)", where "dd" are two digits. You may delete the original lyrics or not; I will look for lines beginning with those 4 characters (possibly preceded by ">" and/or " ").
