From: hernando@cbnewsm.cb.att.com (howard.a.teitelbaum) Newsgroups: rec.games.trivia Subject: Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #47 Message-ID: Date: 10 Aug 93 13:47:49 GMT Organization: AT&T GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #47 Welcome to the next installment of the Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz series, which, to paraphrase an old Saturday Night Live routine, has been serving the Net for more than a fortieth of a century! As before, the 25 regular songs are followed by 2 tie-breakers. These 2 songs are not in the alphabetical mix with the other 25, but are alphabetized with respect to one another. Tie-breakers are songs that either: - were released during 1955-1969, but didn't hit the Top 100 on the Pop chart OR - were released before 1955. There have been no changes in the rules, which appear at the end of the quiz. Since songs are not repeated from previous GOLQs (see Rule #4), I've also posted an updated "used" song list for all the GOLQs to date (1-46). Good luck to all! -- Howard Teitelbaum (hat@floyd.att.com) ****************************************************************************** In addition to rec.games.trivia, this quiz is being cross-posted for the first time to the new alt.rock-n-roll.oldies group. So, some of you folks may be unfamiliar with the most important general rule of Net quizzes, namely: *** DON'T POST YOUR ANSWERS -- MAIL THEM TO THE QUIZ AUTHOR!! *** I will collect everyone's responses, score them, and include the scores when I post the answers three weeks hence. Also, please note that the GOLQ series has a rotating set of 5 or so authors, so please double-check the author's name and e-mail address for each quiz before mailing! ****************************************************************************** Answers must be received by 5:00 PM EDT on Tuesday, August 31, 1993. Try to e-mail early since I don't know how long it takes to get here. E-mail (DO NOT post) answers to: hat@floyd.att.com _____________________________________________________________________________ Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #47 Due 5:00 PM EDT, Tuesday, August 31, 1993 _____________________________________________________________________________ You know it seems the more we talk about it It only makes it worse to live without it But let's talk about it #01) Climb into my machine so we can cruise on out I know a swingin' little joint where we can jump and shout It's not too far back off the highway, not so long a ride You park your car out in the open, you can walk inside #02) I gave my heart to you The one that I trusted You gave it back to me All broken and busted #03) Now things are dreary, baby And it's windy and cold And I stand alone in the rain Callin' your name #04) I remember her eyes Soft, dark, and brown Said she'd never been in trouble Even in town #05) Why was I such a fool? They are based on earlier quiz rules by David Griboff and Valentino Herrera.) 1) PLEASE READ THESE RULES FIRST!! 2) The songs are listed in alphabetical order by artist - as it actually appeared on the original 45 record. When I don't have access to the original 45, my source is Joel Whitburn's "Top Pop Singles 1955-1990" unless I have evidence indicating that source is incorrect. Songs should be alphabetized according to the following rules, unless I've made a mistake: Names beginning with "Mc" are alphabetized as if they were spelled "Mac". Names beginning with "St." are alphabetized as if they were spelled "Saint". Artists' names that begin with a number will be alphabetized using the word equivalent of the number. If a song has been done by more than one artist, the correct response will be the one that fits alphabetically. If you don't know which one fits alphabetically because you have not identified adjoining songs, you may include multiple artists in your entry, but you will only receive credit if you include the one that fits alphabetically. If a lead singer's name is used as part of the artist's name, the following alphabetization rules apply: - If the last name is used as in "Firstname Lastname & the Group" it will be alphabetized under Lastname. - If the last name is used as in "the Group featuring Firstname Lastname" it will be alphabetized under Group. - If the last name is not used as in "Firstname & the Group" it will be alphabetized under Firstname. - If no last name is used, but a nickname is used before the firstname as in "Nickname Firstname & the Group" is alphabetized under Nickname. For example: Artist Alphabetized by "The Crickets featuring Buddy Holly" "Crickets" "Buddy Holly & the Crickets" "Holly" "Little Anthony & the Imperials" "Little" "Little Richard" "Little" "Little Peggy March" "March" "Martha & the Vandellas" "Martha" 3) Artists may be repeated from previous Golden Oldies quizzes. An artist will not be used more than once in any given quiz. 4) Songs will not be repeated from previous Golden Oldies quizzes, whether by the same artist or by a different artist. However, a different song with the same title may be used. 5) Songs WILL BE from the period 1955-1969 only, of course!! 6) Songs are singles that hit the Top 100 on the American Pop Charts. Although most songs will have made the top twenty-five or so, expect a couple of songs in the quiz that will challenge the experts out there. 7) There are 25 songs to identify; each song is worth 20 points. Each Title is worth 10 points; each Artist is worth 10 points. A perfect score is 500 points. You should try to get as close as possible to the way it appears on the label; partial credit will be given for imperfect answers. 8) Append your answers to the lines that begin "#dd)", where "dd" are two digits. You may delete the original lyrics or not; I will look for lines beginning with those 4 characters (possibly preceded by ">" and/or " ").
