These 2 songs will not be in the alphabetical mix with the other 25 but will be alphabetized with respect to one another. What these 2 songs have in common is that they do not fit the eligibility requirements for inclusion in the regular part of the quiz: either they were released prior to 1955 or else they were released between 1955 & 1969 but did not hit the Top 100 on the Pop charts for the specific artist. There have been no changes to the general rules (which appear after the lyrics). As usual, don't forget to let me know if you think you've figured out my theme(s). Good luck to all those who enter (& to those who celebrate, happy holidays/ new year). Jamie Answers must be received by 5:00 PM EST on Wednesday, January 4, 1995. Try to e-mail early since I don't know how long it takes to get here. E-mail (DO NOT POST) answers to: jil@donuts0.bellcore.com I will acknowledge receipt of entries via e-mail. If you don't receive an acknowledgment, I can be reached at (908)699-7929 or FAXed at (908)336-2979 _____________________________________________________________________________ Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #69 Song #s 1-25 were from 1956 through 1969 Due 5:00 PM EST, Wednesday, January 4, 1995 _____________________________________________________________________________ Stop and think before you drink Don't let your parents down They brought you up #01) You tell me it's the institution Well you know, you better free your mind instead But if you go carryin' pictures of Chairman Mao You ain't gonna make it with anyone anyhow #02) Come on baby and a-fly with me A-just as easy as a-ABC It got the rhythm and the rock 'n roll A little cha-cha gonna move my soul #03) Baby I can take a lot But I love everything you've got But oh your kisses thrill me so If you've got someone else I-I've gotta go Oh and honey that you know #04) Hey you on the ground (you on the ground) Take a look up and see what we found (see what we found) Nothing can tie us Bluebirds come up to guide us #05) I got a pretty little girl, she's on-a my mind No doubt about it, she looks so fine She's the best girl that I ever had Sometime she gonna make me feel so bad Naa na-na naa na-na naa na-na naa #06) If there's a spark of love Still left from our romance You owe it to your heart To give me one more chance #07) It may sound silly, but I don't care I got the moonlight, I got the sun, I've got the stars above Me and my filly, well, we both share #08) Listen, like an eagle protects his nest For you I'll do my best Stand by you like a tree And dare anybody to try and move me #09) I know my As and my Bs and my Cs-y Ps and my Qs and my X, Y, ZZ Know how to lose all the blue-blue-blues-y Jump in a pair of my dancin' shoes-y #10) Well we crept up to the water and we seed the girls a-swimmin' There must have been a hundred of 'em pretty young women They looked so fine even birds forgot to sing We laid down in the poison oak and didn't say a thing #11) At my coronation I shocked every foreign nation Giving up my throne to marry you (da-da-da-da-die-ya-do) 'Cause I'd be queen of all the world And then you'd say that I'm your girl #12) I can't find another word with meaning so clear My lips try to whisper sweeter things in your ear But somehow or other nothing sounds quite so dear As this soft caressing word I kno-o-ow #13) Oh, weep no more my lady Sing that song for me So soft and low Just as though you had me on your knee #14) Please, please don't cry This is just adios and not goodbye Soon I'll return Bringing you all the love your heart can hold Please say si si #15) You're my darlin' The only one I'm dreamin' of I gotta make you mine 'Cause you're the only one I'll ever lo-o-o-ove #16) You haven't even got a fat bankroll in your pocket You probably haven't even got twenty-five cents I got 6 Cadillacs, 5 Lincolns, 4 Ford, 6 Mercury, 3 T-Birds, Mustang, ooh woman #17) I've got plenty of time (I've got plenty of time) Time for us to get through it Once again you'll be mine (once again you'll be mine) I still think we can do it And you know how much I love you #18) Bells when you hold me tight-a Bells when we kiss goodnight Bells don't you hear 'em too Because-a I'm in love with you #19) When I breeze into that city A-people gonna stoop and bow (ha ha ha) All them women gonna make me Teach 'em what they don't know how #20) Gotta put up a good front Gotta smile, be polite and don't be blunt Nerves on edge, wound up too tight My headache, I didn't get enough sleep last night #21) Let me kiss your tender lips and know your secret charms And let me know what real love is and hold you in my arms And if this love I pray for, should it all come true Then with all my heart dear, I'd love no one but you #22) I see your ship is coming to a stop. When we don't have access to the original 45, our source is Joel Whitburn's "Top Pop Singles 1955-1990" unless we have evidence indicating that source is incorrect. Songs should be alphabetized according to the following rules, unless we've made a mistake: - Artists' names beginning with "St." are alphabetized as if they were spelled "Saint". - Artists' names beginning with a number are alphabetized using the word equivalent of the number. If a song has been done with the given lyrics by more than one artist, a correct response is one whose artist fits alphabetically between the artists of the adjoining actual answers. If you don't know which artist fits alphabetically because you have not identified adjoining songs, you may include multiple artists in your entry, but you are guaranteed full credit only if you include a correct artist. The quiz master may use his/her judgement in awarding no, partial, or full credit to answers naming only performers of versions not containing the exact given lyrics. If a lead singer's name is used as part of the artist's name, the following alphabetization rules apply: - If the last name is used as in "Firstname Lastname & the Group," it is alphabetized under Lastname. - If the last name is used as in "the Group featuring Firstname Lastname," it is alphabetized under Group. - If the last name is not used as in "Firstname & the Group," it is alphabetized under Firstname. - If no last name is used, but a nickname is used before the firstname as in "Nickname Firstname & the Group," it is alphabetized under Nickname. For example: Artist Alphabetized by ------------------------------------------------------- The Crickets featuring Buddy Holly .. Crickets Buddy Holly & the Crickets .......... Holly Little Anthony & the Imperials ...... Little Little Richard ...................... Little Little Peggy March .................. March Martha & the Vandellas .............. Martha 3) Artists may be repeated from previous Golden Oldies quizzes. An artist will not be used more than once in any given quiz. 4) Songs will not be repeated from previous Golden Oldies quizzes, whether by the same artist or by a different artist. However, a different song with the same title may be used. 5) Songs WILL BE from 1955-1969 only, of course!! Re 1955: a record may have entered the charts in 1954 as long as it was still on the charts in 1955. Re 1969: a record entering the charts in 1969 may still be on the charts in 1970. 6) Songs are singles that hit the Top 100 on the Billboard Pop Charts. Although most songs will have made the top twenty-five or so, expect a couple of songs in the quiz that will challenge the experts out there. 7) There are 25 songs to identify; each song is worth 20 points. Each Title is worth 10 points; each Artist is worth 10 points. A perfect score is 500 points. Partial credit will be given for imperfect answers. 8) Append your answers to the lines that begin "#dd)", where "dd" are two digits. You may delete the original lyrics or not; we will look for lines beginning with those 4 characters (possibly preceded by ">" and/or " "). -- Jamie Lubin Standard disclaimers apply jil@donuts0.bellcore.com
