Let me know if you are able to identify the theme(s). After the 25 regular songs, there are two tie-breakers. These two songs are not in the alphabetical mix with the other 25 but are alphabetized with respect to one another. What these songs have in common is that they do not fit the eligibility requirements for inclusion in the regular part of the quiz: they were released between 1955 and 1969 but did not hit the Top 100 on the Billboard pop chart. There have been no changes to the general rules (which appear after the lyrics). Instead of the usual three-week deadline for entry submissions, you will notice that GOLQ81's duration is four weeks. I will not be able to access my e-mail from September 9-16. Therefore, I can't acknowledge receipt of your entry during that period. Good luck to all! Barry, Joe, and Scooter Answers must be received by 5:00 PM EST on Monday, September 18, 1995. Try to e-mail early since I don't know how long it takes to get here. E-mail (DO NOT post) answers to barrys@cais.com I will acknowledge receipt of all entries via e-mail. ________________________________________________________________________ Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #81 Songs are from 1958 through 1969 Due 5:00 PM EST, Monday, September 18, 1995 ________________________________________________________________________ Your mother and your daddy done told me baby Not to bring you to the South I brought you to the city and the bright lights knocked you out #01) From the letters that I write they think I'm fine But by day I make the cars By night I make the bars If only they could read between the lines #02) The sun-tanned bodies and-a Waves and sunshine California girls and-a Beautiful coast line And warmed-up weather #03) Tried to hitch a ride to San Francisco Gotta do the things I wanna do #04) But what happens when the statue on the pedastal Comes tumbling to the ground I don't wanna be around To see the sorrow on her face When she thinks I let her down #05) Miami, Florida Atlanta, Georgia Raleigh, North Carolina Hey #06) I know I need a small vacation But it don't look like rain And if it snows that stretch down South Will never stand the strain #07) Well it's three o'clock in the morning, baby I'm bidin' my time Give us two more, mister waiter Got an awful lot on my mind #08) She goes down to Big Daddy when she Wants a mink She goes down to the plumber when she Wants to fix her sink #09) I'll find a pretty girl down there They know how to love you And treat you right They have a beach party Every night #10) There's a young man that I know His age is twenty-one Comes from down in southern Colorado Just out of the service And he's lookin' for his fun #11) Just about a year ago I set out on the road Seeking my fame and fortune And looking for a pot of gold Things got bad and things got worse I guess you know the tune #12) She's got a shape like Oooh, Rin Tin Tin And a face like My Uncle Ben When it comes to the twist or doin' the bop Everybody calls her the queen of the hop #13) Like the sound you hear The name is in your ear But you can't forget from sundown to sunset It's all in the air You hear it everywhere No matter what you do It's gonna get a hold on you #14) I'm going to Chicago that's the last place my baby stayed I'm packing up my bags gonna leave this old town right away #15) Prettiest town I've ever seen Women there don't treat you mean #16) Queen of the surfer girls She's got stars in her eyes and knots on her knees, now Her crazy grass shift really sways in the breeze, now #17) Got a letter just this mornin' It was postmarked Omaha It was typed and neatly written Offerin' me a better job Better job at higher wages, expenses paid, a new car But I'm on TV here locally and I can't quit, I'm a star #18) I tell you now my biggest moment Is when I stop to see That pretty blue-eyed angel Who's waits right there for me I'm gonna tell her that I love her That I miss her every day #19) I saw a welcoming light And stopped to rest for the night And that is when I saw her As I pulled in outside of the small motel She was there #20) On a cold and gray Chicago mornin' Another little baby child is born #21) We're gonna take a little trip to Norfolk Just to see them build a great big ship We're gonna take a trip over to New Orleans Just to see the girls shake their hips #22) They're doing it in Chicago, oh And in Detroit too Way down in L.A. When we don't have access to the original 45, our source is Joel Whitburn's "Top Pop Singles 1955-1993" unless we have evidence indicating that source is incorrect. Songs should be alphabetized according to the following rules, unless we've made a mistake: - Artists' names beginning with "St." are alphabetized as if they were spelled "Saint". - Artists' names beginning with a number are alphabetized using the word equivalent of the number. If a song has been done with the given lyrics by more than one artist, a correct response is one whose artist fits alphabetically between the artists of the adjoining actual answers. If you don't know which artist fits alphabetically because you have not identified adjoining songs, you may include multiple artists in your entry, but you are guaranteed full credit only if you include a correct artist. The quiz master may use his/her judgement in awarding no, partial, or full credit to answers naming only performers of versions not containing the exact given lyrics. If a lead singer's name is used as part of the artist's name, the following alphabetization rules apply: - If the last name is used as in "Firstname Lastname & the Group," it is alphabetized under Lastname. - If the last name is used as in "the Group featuring Firstname Lastname," it is alphabetized under Group. - If the last name is not used as in "Firstname & the Group," it is alphabetized under Firstname. - If no last name is used, but a nickname is used before the firstname as in "Nickname Firstname & the Group," it is alphabetized under Nickname. For example: Artist Alphabetized by ------------------------------------------------------- The Crickets featuring Buddy Holly .. Crickets Buddy Holly & the Crickets .......... Holly Little Anthony & the Imperials ...... Little Little Richard ...................... Little Little Peggy March .................. March Martha & the Vandellas .............. Martha 3) Artists may be repeated from previous Golden Oldies quizzes. An artist will not be used more than once in any given quiz. 4) Songs will not be repeated from previous Golden Oldies quizzes, whether by the same artist or by a different artist. However, a different song with the same title may be used. 5) Songs WILL BE from 1955-1969 only, of course!! Re 1955: a record may have entered the charts in 1954 as long as it was still on the charts in 1955. Re 1969: a record entering the charts in 1969 may still be on the charts in 1970. 6) Songs are singles that hit the Top 100 on the Billboard Pop Charts. Although most songs will have made the top twenty-five or so, expect a couple of songs in the quiz that will challenge the experts out there. 7) There are 25 songs to identify; each song is worth 20 points. Each Title is worth 10 points; each Artist is worth 10 points. A perfect score is 500 points. Partial credit will be given for imperfect answers. 8) Append your answers to the lines that begin "#dd)", where "dd" are two digits. You may delete the original lyrics or not; we will look for lines beginning with those 4 characters (possibly preceded by ">" and/or " "). -------------------------------------------------------------------- Barry Silk barrys@cais.com
