Welcome to the April edition! About 2/3 of the songs relate to my recurring
RIP theme.

Another of Bob Bluestein's fun Puzzlers is below the main quiz.

Enjoy!

                       Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #471
               Recordings #01-25 were from 1955 through 1969
Due 5:00 PM EDT (GMT-4) on Thursday, Apr. 30, 2026
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I know you'd never forgive me, dear
For running out on you
I was wrong to take a chance
With somebody new
#01)

I told you, baby, how I feel
One word can close this deal
#02)

And the only thing
That I ask of you
Is for you to care
Care for me alone
#03)

Once you used to date my big sister
Now, baby, she's too old for you
#04)

Well, meet me, baby, down on 45th Street
#05)

You gotta make it, break it
Shake it all around
#06)

Wish I may, wish I might
Make this wish come true tonight
#07)

You take such care to keep that girl's feet clean
Like she's some kind of figurine
The world's so far below her, it's not her scene
And so she uses you to stand between
#08)

I'm not superstitious about you
But I can't take no chance
You got me spinnin', baby
Baby, I'm in a trance
#09)

I sent for lots of things from Sears and Roebuck
Spark plugs and fancy ties
#10)

Though I'm just one of your lovers
And I know there are so many others
You do something strange to me, baby
#11)

Well, shut them books and throw 'em away
And say goodbye to dull school days
Look alive and change your ways
#12)

I can be a beggar or a queen
'Cause you've got the power to make me anything
You've got the power, so open your heart
It's up to you
#13)

Does his kiss really mean what you think it means?
Are the words that he whispers true?
Are you sure you understand the touch of his hand?
Does his touch mean too much to you?
#14)

And when you raise the roof with your rock 'n' roll
You'll get a lot more kicks
#15)

Every time I make a move to love you
#16)

That's when my love begins to shine
You're the only girl I know
That really loves me so
#17)

You should see
What a lovely, lovely world this'd be
Everyone learns to live together
#18)

I see no reason to take me home
I'm old enough to face the dark
#19)

You made the rain disappear
It's just like magic when I hold you near
#20)

They're making plans
Shaking hands
I've been waitin' so long
Has something gone wrong?
#21)

Gazing at the distant lights
In the starry sky
#22)

How can people be so heartless?
How can people be so cruel?
#23)

John's in love with Joan
Joan's in love with Jim
Jim's in love with someone
Who's not in love with him
#24)

Emptiness is a place you're in
With nothing to lose
But no more to win
#25)

------------
Tie-Breakers
------------

Everything is wrong since me and my baby parted
All day long I'm walking 'cause I couldn't get my car started
Laid off from my job and I can't afford to check it
I wish somebody'd come along and run into it and wreck it
#T1)

If you come a-knockin' at my door
Don't say that you didn't know the score
Don't care to be called what I ain't
#T2)

PUZZLER
-------

Submission of an entry for this section is optional. Your participation
or performance has no bearing whatsoever on your quiz score or ranking.
Please note that the diagram below has been designed to be printed using
a fixed-width font such as Courier. Copying and pasting the diagram
into its own document may prove useful in getting it to fit on a single
printed page.

                       T R A V E L I N ' B A N D S

This Puzzler takes the form of a grid composed of horizontal rows and
looping square bands. Each "traversin'" row and "travelin'" band is to
be filled with strings of entries, each entry being either a word or a
pair of words.

Each of Rows 1 through 11 is to be filled with either 2 or 3 abutting,
non-overlapping entries - one letter per box, omitting spaces - a total
of 11 letters per row. Each row's entries are clued below in the order
in which they appear, left-to-right, in the row.

The rows are crossed by nested bands labelled A through E. Each band
is to be filled with a string of abutting, non-overlapping entries - one
letter per box, omitting spaces. A band's entries start in its top left
box (labelled "A" for Band A, etc.) and proceed clockwise until they
complete the band. Each band's entries are clued below in the order in
which they appear in the band. The grid's "@" characters are used solely
for the purpose of delineating the bands clearly.

Just so that no one can say these instructions provided no help at all,
two solution letters have been entered in the grid to start you off:
Halfway through the outer band, down on the corner of the grid is one
such letter ("N"). Following that band from there to the left, then
turning up around the bend to the end of the band you will find the
second letter (also "N"). You're welcome!

Once the grid has been correctly filled in, your ultimate task is to
figure out the name of a particular group producing a happy noise:

                  ________ and the ________ ________

This group can be determined as follows:

a) The first blank above is filled by a word consisting of the letters
found in 5 boxes connected in a straight line (either horizontally,
vertically, or diagonally) somewhere in the grid.

b) The second blank above is filled by a word consisting of the letters
found in 4 boxes connected in a straight line (either horizontally,
vertically, or diagonally) somewhere in the grid.

c) The third blank above is filled by a word consisting of the letters
found in 4 boxes that form a 2x2 square somewhere in the grid.
