                       Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #220
               Recordings #01-25 were from 1955 through 1969
           Due 12:00 midnight EDT (GMT-4), Tuesday, May 31, 2005
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Flippin' like a pancake, poppin' like a cork
#01)

Mama, I'm telling you as sure as I'm standing here
She's my girl, and that's the way I'm keeping it now, mama dear
No good will it do you to stand there and frown at me
The girl's got my heart and my love's coming down on me
#02)

I tried so hard to stand as I stumbled and fell to the ground
So hard to laugh as I fumbled and reached for the love I'd found
Knowing it was gone
#03)

Well, I guess that I was just your puppet you held on a string
To think I thought you really loved me, but look what thoughts can bring
#04)

Why did I give my heart so fast?
It never will happen again
#05)

I can remember how you kiss so fine
(Now that you left me what will I do?)
What will I do, girl?
#06)

Dorme-t-elle?
Je ne crois pas
Respire-t-elle?
Oui, mais tout bas
#07)

All my love all the way
(All my love all the way)
I believe that I belong
By your side right or wrong
#08)

If the sun doesn't always shine
Dum dum, dum dum
Just remember that you are mine
Dum dum, dum dum
#09)

Some say it's a sign of weakness for a man to beg
Then weak I'd rather be
#10)

That ain't the way it should be
You took away everything I had, you put the hurt on me
#11)

You just take your baby
Don't you leave that spot
Then you dance like crazy
Give it all you've got
#12)

You're the one for me
I only had to see the sunlight in your hair
Your soft, soft silhouette to know I'd always care
#13)

We'll blow a genie from a cigarette
We'll take a magic carpet ride
We'll tell our smoky friend, "Now don't forget, you must keep us side by side"
#14)

Do I love to love you? Aw, honey, yes indeed!
'Cause anything that you're missin', believe me, honey, you don't need
#15)

Thrill me
Let your kisses thrill me, yeah
Oh, just like you alone can do
#16)

And now the days have began to get rough
Said I want you to love me, love me, love me, baby
Till I get enough
#17)

She tried to take me upstairs for a ride
#18)

Well, today I was barrelin' down old 66
When up beside me pulled a brand new diesel rig,
Both stacks blowing black coal
And as she pulled around and back in front of me
A big lump came into my throat
And my eyes watered like I had a bad old cold
#19)

He likes to get drunk
And sing boogie woogie
And it sounds real funky
Come on
#20)

I know there are some women
Guilty of this, too
I'm not tryin' to run your life
The choice is up to you
#21)

You hurt, I hurt
I'm that much a part of you
Everything that you feel, baby, I feel it, too
Since I'm that much a part of you
#22)

Thruppence and sixpence every day
Just to drive to my baby
#23)

You tell me you love me
You say you'll be true
Then you fly around
With somebody new
#24)

Just leave it to me
Don't ever be ashamed
Just give me a chance
And I'll take care of everything
Your troubles I'll share
If you let me know I'll be there
Honey, I'll stay close to you
Anyplace and anywhere
#25)

------------
Tie-Breakers
------------

And I'm floating in a most peculiar way
And the stars look very different today
#T1)

Take these eyes that once could see
Now reflections of my misery
The happiness I thought would last
Is now the common, just a thing of the past
#T2)

... Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band!! It was "twenty years ago
today" almost forty years ago! And next year Sir Paul will be able to sing
"When I'm Sixty-Four" with authority. "Sgt. Pepper" topped the Billboard
album chart in the U.S. for 15 weeks and was the biggest selling album of
all time in the U.K. until surpassed by "Abbey Road." "Sgt. Pepper" broke
the rules for how songs were recorded, how songs fit together, and how an
album was designed and packaged. In an effort to do everything differently,
The Beatles, according to engineer Geoff Emerick, "drove the equipment to
its limit." The album became the soundtrack for the burgeoning hippie
movement in the U.S., and drugs were a part of this new scene; The Beatles
tried pot, cocaine, and acid. The president of EMI noted cannabis smells
in the studio, but never pursued it. Producer George Martin said, "Of
course I knew they were smoking ... they tried to hide it from me; they'd
go out into the canteen one at a time ... [they] would have the joints
already rolled out there ... it would be obvious, but it seemed to help!"

Solve clues A - P below (answers can be more than one word long), then
insert the answers' letters as marked into the accompanying diagram to
complete the given George Martin quote about the effect of drugs on the
group's creativity and recording sessions. The "Sgt. Pepper"-related clues
are intentionally hard, so some of the diagram's letters are found in more
than one clue to make solving a bit easier. See how well you can do without
first referring to the album cover or songs themselves! When solved, one
of the diagram's columns will contain the scrambled letters of the title of
another group's album whose musical inventiveness Paul claimed "flipped him
out" and made him want to top it. Another of the diagram's columns will
contain the scrambled letters of the name of a particular character found
in "Sgt. Pepper"'s lyrics. Finally, one of the clue answers' columns will
spell out the name of a person painted out of the original album front cover
crowd scene (standing next to Lewis Carroll) at the request of EMI, who
feared the possibility of offending anyone.

The quote:

According to George Martin, "Sgt. Pepper" was incredible because
it took on its own character: "It was a complete change of life,
a very long and arduous series of recordings, and I suppose that
looking back on it, it would never have been formed in exactly
that way if the boys hadn't got into the drug scene, and if I
       hadn't been a normal person - ...
