GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #405 (GOLQ405)

Welcome to GOLQ405.

This September marked the thirtieth anniversary of the quiz. I've had all the
time in the world to think up a clever theme related to that, but alas, the
inspiration didn't happen. And now time has run out. So there is a theme, and
it is broader than it may first appear, probably used before. All 27 songs can
be tied to it. Also, Bob Bluestein has contributed another special puzzle for
this occasion.

Like most themed quizzes, there are both well-known and obscure songs.

Enjoy!

                        Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #405
                Recordings #01-25 were from 1955 through 1969
              Due 5:00 p.m. EDT (GMT-4) on Saturday, October 31, 2020
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ain't got time to take a fast train
#01)

I took off my watch
And found I had all the time in the world
#02)

Go-oh on, go-oh on,
Until you reach the end of the line
But I know you'll pass my way again
#03)

The name of the place, hah, is Augusta, G-A
Down there we have a good time
We don't talk, hah
We all get together, any type of weather
Then we do the Camel Walk
#04)

And when we take a walk
We got no time for talk
'Cause fancy talk is for the birds
#05)

Ain't got time to fix the shingles
Ain't got time to fix the floor
Ain't got time to oil the hinges
Nor to mend the windowpane
#06)

I send you flowers
Spend my hours thinking of you
But I saw you late last night
You were holding another boy tight
#07)

Oh, well, he left his nagging wife now
He slept for twenty years
Didn't bother to wake up
#08)

At the end of the day
We can go down to the bay
And together hand in hand
We will walk along the sand
#09)

And there are new thoughts
Ready and waiting to explode
When tomorrow is today
The bells may toll for some
But nothing can change
#10)

And I don't mean to hurry
As long as I'm with you
We'll take it nice and easy
And use my simple plan
#11)

The company was gay, we turn'd night into day
But all that's left is a place dark and lonely
A terraced house in a mean street back of town
Becomes a shrine when I think of you only
#12)

The fog was gone the seventh day
And they saw the mornin' sun
Ten hours away from homeland
#13)

All the time, rain or shine
You're gonna love it
I'm gonna love it
Day time, night time
Your time, my time
#14)

Baby, I feel good
From the moment I arise
Feel good from morning
#15)

And babe, don't you know it's a pity
The days can't be like the nights
#16)

That the carnival is over
And you've seen much better days
You have wasted too much time
Into many different plays
You deny the possibility of
Growing old
#17)

I gotta make my own way
There's rent, I gotta pay
I need a night-time love
To get me through the day
#18)

As I peer through the window
Of lost time
Looking over my yesterday
And all the love I gave all in vain
#19)

As I lie awake resting from the day
I can hear the clock passing time away
Oh, I couldn't sleep for on my mind
#20)

Get what you came for, before it's too late
Get what you came for, the meadows can wait
So every night, I'd sit alone and learn
What loneliness meant
#21)

You wake up every morning,
Go to school every day,
Spend your nights on the corner
Just passing time away
#22)

When I cried the other day
Searching for my love
Up and down and all around
I can't wait no more
#23)

Twenty-four little hours
Brought the sun and the flowers
Where there used to be rain
#24)

What's your name
Who's your daddy?
#25)

------------
Tie-Breakers
------------

You've been keeping me lonely
You've been keeping me down
And I'm sitting here wondering
Why I'm still hanging around
The night's grown cold, babe
Can't you see the sign?
Ah, there's no use wasting
#T1)

Time it was and what a time it was, it was
A time of innocence
A time of confidences
Long ago it must be
#T2)

Welcome to this special Puzzler celebrating the 405th edition of the GOLQ!
Submission of an entry for this section is optional. Your participation
or performance has no bearing whatsoever on your quiz score or ranking.
Please note that the grid and clue answers below have been designed to
be printed using a fixed-width font such as Courier. (Copying the text
below into a word processor and editing some may help get columns lined
up properly and put each section on its own page before printing.)
This puzzle is an acrostic. It contains a grid followed by 35 clues
(labelled A to II) whose answers' letters are used to fill the grid's
boxes. Following the clues is the Clue Answers section, containing 35
lines with slots in which to put the answers' letters. Each clue's
answer consists of one or more words. The number (00-99) under a slot
indicates where its letter should be placed in the grid. Unfortunately,
for each number 00 to 99 there are two boxes in the grid with that number,
so the solver must figure out which of those two boxes the given letter
should go in. For convenience, each grid box contains letters pointing
to the two clues that may provide the answer letter that should fill
that box (e.g., "GAA" means either Clue G or Clue AA).
When completed, the grid will tell of a recording artist's improvisation
that evolved into his first top ten pop single. The letters of one of the
grid's columns will rearrange to spell out this song title. The letters of
one of the clue answers' columns will spell out a related song title. And
the combined letters of one of the clues and its answer will rearrange to
spell out the full name of the recording artist.
It all started ..
