GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #419 (GOLQ419)

Welcome to GOLQ419.

Merry Christmas, this should not be that hard a quiz. There is no real theme;
it's more like my last quiz with mostly Top 40 songs and artists not heard from
lately. The tie-breakers share a theme. And once again, Bob Bluestein has
contributed a Puzzler for the quiz.

Enjoy!

                        Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #419
                Recordings #01-25 were from 1955 through 1969
Due 5:00 PM EST (GMT-5) on Friday, December 31, 2021.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
From the canyons of the mind
We wander on and stumble blindly
Through the often tangled maze
Of starless nights and sunless days
While asking for some kind of clue
#01)

You know I hate to go
But goodbye, love was sweet
Our worlds can never meet
#02)

Don't keep us so far apart
I love you
I love you
Are you too far above me to hear?
#03)

Now you're in the center ring
And their lines don't mean a thing
Why don't you let me try
#04)

Make me laugh so they won't see
How much it hurts
Loving you the way I do
And knowing I'm losing you
#05)

Maybe you'll believe me when I'm finally through
Through
Through
Through
#06)

You get the girls
I'll get the car
Bring a banjo and an old guitar
Get out the spoons
You know the tunes
Hey diddle diddle with
A fiddle in the middle
#07)

Can't you see you're in my way now?
Don't you know you cramp my style?
#08)

One of these days I'm gonna raise up
My glistenin' wings and fly
But that day will have to wait for a while
#09)

You thought you hadn't found a good girl
One to love you and give you the world
Now you find that you've been misused
Talk to me, I'll do what you choose, I want you to
#10)

He'll take your girl and then he'll lie
And he'll mistreat her
It seems every day now
You hear people say now
#11)

It's gray, it's gray
Since she went her way
#12)

Girl, don't you know every time I see you smilin'?
(Hurts so bad 'cause when I see you, I start tryin')
Try everything to stop but there's no denyin'
(Fallin' in love with you girl is just like dyin')
#13)

He loves Levis and brown eyes
And wind blowin' through his hair
#14)

I get no rest when I'm feelin' weary
I gotta pack my bags and go
I gotta be somewhere tomorrow
#15)

Then I kissed her eyes with mine
As she knelt before me
Poured the wine and told me her story
We lit a fire and watched it grow higher
#16)

I'm in love with your daughter
The one
With the champagne eyes
She knows that I love her
Ever since she showed me those eyes
#17)

One thing you can be sure of
I'll take good care of your love
If you will let me give you mine
#18)

She's a hot footin' baby
There ain't no dance she couldn't do
She's my groovy little baby
#19)

America, where are you now
Don't you care about your sons and daughters
Don't you know we need you now
We can't fight alone
#20)

I've given up my friends just (for you)
My friends are gone and you
Have too
#21)

It's funny how they look so good together
Wonder what is wrong with me
Why can't I, accept the fact she's chosen him
And simply let them be
#22)

I see the purple shades of evening
And on the ground
The shadows fall and once again you're in my arms
#23)

Please don't send me
Any wedding invitation
For I couldn't bear to see her there with you
If she's happy
That will be my consolation
#24)

My love has no beginning, my love has no end
No front or back, and my love won't bend
I'm in the middle, lost in a spin
A-loving you
And you don't know, you don't know, you don't know, you don't know
#25)

------------
Tie-Breakers
-------------

Well, my father told me
"Son, you had better get a gun"
Well, my first friend went down
When I was 17 years old
Well, my first friend went down
When I was 17 years old
Well, there's one thing I can say about that boy
He gotta go
#T1)

May seem peculiar
How I think of you
If you want me, darlin'
Here's what you must do
You gotta give me
'Cause I can't give the best
Unless I got

PUZZLER
-------

Submission of an entry for this section is optional. Your participation
or performance has no bearing whatsoever on your quiz score or ranking.
Please note that the grid and clue answers below have been designed to
be printed using a fixed-width font such as Courier.

This puzzle is an acrostic. It contains a grid followed by 16 clues
(labelled A to P) whose answers' letters are used to fill the grid's
boxes. Following the clues is the Clue Answers section, containing 16
lines with slots in which to put the answers' letters. Each clue's
answer consists of one or more words. The number under a slot indicates
where its letter should be placed in the grid.

When completed, the grid will reveal a quote from a recording artist
and his name. Note, however, that spaces have been removed (for your
inconvenience!).

The letters of one column of the solved grid will rearrange to spell the
title of a song co-written by the artist. John Fogerty praised this
song as "truth". David Crosby claimed that this song "... was the
defining point for me. When I heard it, I thought, 'I give up. I can't
do that. I'll never be able to do that.'".

The letters of one column of the completed Clue Answers section will
display what this Puzzler's featured artist has a talent for producing.
It is also what Art Garfunkel was referring to when he called Paul Simon
to say that he'd just heard on the radio "the greatest, most creative
record of them all".

One final hint as to the featured artist: Bob Dylan said of him, "Jesus,
that ear. He should donate it to the Smithsonian ... He made all his
records with four tracks, but you couldn't make his records if you had a
hundred tracks today."

Bonus question: Who was Paul Tanner?
