GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #428 (GOLQ428)

Welcome to GOLQ428.
It's fall, school and football are returning. But first, a quick appreciation to
Joel Whitburn, who recently passed away. His books have given me countless hours
of enjoyment. And where would this quiz be without him? So thanks, Joel. I used
several of his books to connect all the songs in this quiz, it's as much a
riddle as a theme, so just have fun. And once again, Bob Bluestein has
contributed a puzzler.
Enjoy!

                        Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #428
                Recordings #01-25 were from 1956 through 1969
Due 5:00 PM EDT (GMT-4) on Friday, September 30, 2022.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

That I am not going to be the one to share your schemes
#01)

Walk right on in
Stretch out your arms
Let the lovelight shine
On my soul, baby
#02)

And still dig those sounds (still dig those -censored?- sounds)
#03)

We fell in love on a Sunday morning
All at once, I heard angels singing, singing Hallelujah
Singing Hallelujah, Hallelujah
#04)

One rainy morning, dark and gray
A soul winged its way to heaven
#05)

Your nose is longer than a telephone wire
Ask me, baby, why I'm sad
You've been out all night, know you've been bad
#06)

Well I need you girl, by my side
Oh little girl, will you like to take a ride now
#07)

I won't be your second choice
I've got to be your number one
Or I ain't gonna love you at all
#08)

Oh, there you are
Lighting up the sky
I need a love
Oh me, oh me, oh my-y-y-y
#09)

Keep hearing the part that used to touch our hearts
Staying (together forever)
Darling (breaking up never)
#10)

Aw man, will you put down that thing
You got in your hand
And find your hole and get in it
I'm gonna say this one more time
5-10-15-20
#11)

Never never ever erase
The pain in my heart and my eyes
As I go through the lonely years
#12)

Drink all the water you can hold
Wash your face, cool your feet
But leave the bottle full for others
#13)

Over and over and over and over again, my friend
#14)

But I think I'd better turn you down this time
'Cause you've used all of your charms on me
And I kind of miss the things I left behind
A girl who loves me, is thinking of me
#15)

Much to my surprise
She was eatin' chicken and dumplings
A-with some other guy
#16)

'Neath the moon we walked (we walked)
And walked (and walked) and talked (and talked)
Of love (of love)
And then, we ki-i-i-i-issed
#17)

Let's walk up to the preacher
And let us say I do
#18)

When you smile it's like a dream
And I'm so lucky
'Cause I found a girl like you
#19)

Why keep your love to yourself? woh-oh, yeah, yeah
It's like a souvenir that just sits on a shelf, woh, oh, oh, oh
It seems like you built a fence around your heart
And are afraid that sharing might tear it apart
#20)

A yardstick for lunatics, one point of view
#21)

There is danger in the summer moon above
#22)

Now I see her differently
I've got to make her mine
So I'll make my home Fun City
And let the lights shine bright on me
#23)

Again, again and again
Well now, swing me, swing me
All the way down there
#24)

If God's a-coming, he oughta make it by then
#25)

------------
Tie-Breakers
------------

Ro-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-l-l-l another one
Just like the other one
That one's just about burned to the end
So come on and be a real friend
#T1)

Sometime I live in the country babe (yeah)
Sometime I live downtown (yeah)
Sometime I take a great notion (yeah)
To jump in the river and drown
#T2)

PUZZLER
-------

Submission of an entry for this section is optional. Your participation or
performance has no bearing whatsoever on your quiz score or ranking.

This puzzle contains a Clues section with 26 clues (each followed by the
number of letters in its answer). Following that section is a Clue Answers
section with 26 corresponding lines containing underscore characters
representing blanks to be filled by the letters of the one-or-more-word clue
answers (omitting between-word spacing and punctuation). All "special"
characters (asterisks, sharp signs, percent signs, dollar signs, and plus
signs) on these lines should be ignored during this clue solving phase. Note
that as a bit of help, some letters have already been filled in for you.

Once you have filled in all clue answer lines, your task is to sort these 26
lines (retaining the "special" characters) in alphabetical order by their
clue answers' first letters. Reading this list bottom to top, mark down all
letters that directly precede an asterisk. Then reading this list top to
bottom, mark down all letters directly preceding a sharp sign. These letters
combined will spell out (without between-word spacing and punctuation) the
song that the performing rights organization Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) in
1999 ranked as the most played song on American radio and television in the
20th century. Next, reading the list of sorted clue answer lines from top to
bottom, mark down all letters that directly precede a percent sign. Then
reading this list bottom to top, mark down all letters directly preceding
a dollar sign. These letters combined will spell out (without between-word
spacing and punctuation) a byline related to the above song. Finally,
reading the list of sorted clue answer lines from top to bottom, mark down
all letters that directly precede a plus sign. These 10 letters will spell
a recording artist who almost had a #1 hit with the above song.

Enjoy!
