GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #400 (GOLQ400)

Welcome to GOLQ400, another milestone for the longest running Internet quiz.
This September will also mark the thirtieth anniversary of the quiz. And as an
added bonus, Bob Bluestein has contributed a special puzzle for this occasion.
Shout-outs to several who have kept this running behind the scenes all these
years: All the QMs past and present, Rick for creating it, Marc for managing
the website, Howard for the used list, Bob for compiling the rules, and Barry,
if he's lurking, for the MOAQs and other contributions in the early days.

Hope everyone is doing well, I'm guessing most are under social distancing
rules of some kind. This quiz has a theme based on the common memory game
sometimes called Concentration, where two playing cards, squares in a grid,
etc. are turned over in hopes of uncovering a match of some kind. This theme
may have been used in a previous GOLQ, but I'm not sure.

In this quiz, there are 13 matches to discover, 12 involve two songs, one has
three to account for the 27 songs. And all the 13 matched sets will have
something in common. Once you identify the larger theme, the quiz should
become much easier to solve. And knowing how smart everyone is, I expect there
to be a lot of perfect scores.

Like most themed quizzes, there are both well-known and obscure songs.

Enjoy!

Like I love you
Nobody could
Ah, nobody could
But when you close your
Your a-arms around me
#01)

Searching for my double, looking for
Complete evaporation to the core
Though I tried and failed at finding any door
I must have thought that there was nothing more
Absurd
#02)

I watched the apples falling one by one
And I recall
The moment of them all
The day I kissed your cheek and you were gone
#03)

I'm ready to go anywhere
I'm ready for to fade
#04)

You've found a world
That's just begun
Who's gonna say
Your day's too long
Or right from wrong
Who leads you on
#05)

Love and only love it can't be denied
No matter what you think about it
You just won't be able to do without it
Take a tip from one who's tried
#06)

I want you to wear my orange sweater
The beat-up sweater with the high school letter
Gonna make a chain of paper clips
To chain us together while I kiss your lips
#07)

Manhattan's gone Latin
One note samba and La Bamba
And the girl from Ipanema
#08)

By August, she was mine
#09)

Heartaches are going to the inside
My tears are holding back
They're trying not to fall
My heart's out of the running
True love's scratched for another's sake
#10)

I know why you're blue
You finally found something
That your daddy won't buy for you
#11)

I will wait for you
Til the sun falls down from the sky
What else can I do
Wait, will wait for you
#12)

From crayons to perfume
#13)

Come on, take me by the hand
Tell me I'm your lover man
We'll have fun, just we two
You for me, me for you
#14)

Goodbye to tender nights
Beside the silvery sea
I long to hold you near and kiss you just once more
But you were on the ship and I was on the shore
#15)

See the girl with the red dress on
She can do the dog all night long
#16)

Before you leave be sure you find
You want her love much more than mine
Cause I'll just say we've never met
#17)

O-oh-oh, a-woh-oh-oh-oh
Have I ever told you
How good if feels to hold you
#18)

When I start to open my mouth and sing a little song
Makes everything right that once seemed wrong
Even the cuckoo in the clock on the wall
Is just having himself a natural ball
#19)

Yesterday it rained in Tennessee
I heard it also rained in Tallahassee
But not a drop fell on little old me
#20)

I'll make that other cheek mine
And maybe the next guy
That don't wear a silk tie
He can walk by and say "Hi"
#21)

The only boy who could ever teach me
#22)

Have you ever seen that same girl cry?
The one she loves has said goodbye
And as she listens with tears in her eyes
He simply tells her
#23)

I've traveled far, the land and the sea
Beautiful places I happened to be
One little town I'll never forget
#24)

I love you both
And this will be
Pure H-E-double-L for me
#25)

------------
Tie-Breakers
------------

I followed with the sideshows to another town
And I found you in a trailer on the camping grounds
You were betting on some lover, you were shaking up the dice
And I thought I saw you cheating once or twice
#T1)

Fly a red balloon on someone else's time
They will try to pull you down and change your mind
Break loose and find a new skyline
Syncopate your life and move against the grain
Don't you let them tell you that they're all the same
#T2)

PUZZLER
-------

Welcome to this special Puzzler celebrating the 400th edition of the GOLQ!

Submission of an entry for this section is optional. Your participation
or performance has no bearing whatsoever on your quiz score or ranking.
Please note that the grid and clue answers below have been designed to
be printed using a fixed-width font such as Courier. (Copying the text
below into a word processor and editing some may help get columns lined
up properly and put each section on its own page before printing.)

This puzzle is an acrostic. It contains a grid followed by 19 clues
(labelled A to S) whose answers' letters are used to fill the grid's
boxes. Following the clues is the Clue Answers section, containing 19
lines with slots in which to put the answers' letters. Each clue's
answer consists of one or more words. The number under a slot indicates
where its letter should be placed in the grid. Numbers start at -9 instead
of +1 purely as a way of avoiding some 100+ (i.e. 3-digit) numbers. Note
that spacing between letters and words in the answer lines is irregular
(for your inconvenience!).

When completed, the grid will reveal two quotes from a recording artist.
The first is a straightforward four-sentence self-description. The second
comes from an earlier time, when this person would drum on pots and pans
while washing dishes at work; it was an annoyed response to a supervisor's
bringing in pot after pot to wash. A variant of the first part this quote
was later put to good use. Note that four columns of the completed Clue
Answers section will display relevant information. In addition, a fifth
column's letters, when rearranged, will name the city in which the recording
artist was born and in which those pots were scrubbed. Furthermore, a sixth
column's letters, when rearranged, will name the musical instrument with
which the artist is most associated. Finally, the letters in one of the
grid's columns, when rearranged, will suggest what you can do with your
solved puzzle!
